Isn't it amazing how many types of milk are available? You can get cow's milk, but if you're lactose intolerant or vegan, you can use soy milk instead. If you're worried about the possible health risks of eating too much soy, you can pick up some rice milk. If you're not into the watery consistency, then there's always almond milk. Basically, you have a lot of options.

So nutritionally speaking, ever wonder how all these types of milk compare? If so then read more

Serving Size = 1 cup Calories Total Fat (g) Saturated Fat (g) Cholesterol (mg) Carbs (g) Sugars (g) Protein (g)

Chocolate Rice Milk 160 3 0 0 34 28 2
Almond Milk 90 2.5 0 0 16 14 1

Well there you have it. If you're watching your calorie intake, skim milk or almond milk are definitely the way to go. If you're trying to lower your cholesterol, I'd stick with cholesterol-free soy, rice, or almond milk. If you're trying to get more protein in your diet, than surprisingly enough, plain soy milk is the best choice. When choosing which one, it all comes down to your dietary or ethical preference, but I'd only use heavy cream in small quantities.

I loooooove almond milk. The kind I use actually only has 45 calories per serving.

It's my favorite thing ever over Crispix with frozen raspberries and pecans. YUM!

I've had rice milk and I like that.

Question for almond milk drinks - does almond milk taste nutty?

Sometimes I want almonds but I can't eat them because they're to heavy in my stomach. Peanut milk has satisfied my peanut craving when I cannot stomach PB or nuts. So does almond milk taste almondy?

I LOVE rice milk and like soymilk, but I'm curious: has anyone tried that new hempmilk? Keep seeing it at Whole Foods and want to try it.
    Anyone?

I either drink 1% or skim. For some reason soy milk doesn't sit well with me.

I love almond milk! I drink the Almond Breeze unsweetened one, with only 45 cals per serving. The chocolate one it the best tho. wackdoodle, it's not very nutty, it's hard to describe, but it's creamier then rice milk, but not as thick as soy or regual milk, but it has that almond after taste.

I tried the hemp milk, and it's the worst thing I've ever tasted, it tasted like juiced canned peas. But I guess it's different for everyone.

I just saw a nutrionist who couldn't find anything wrong with my diet but did suggest cutting back on milk. I drink 1%. I hadn't realized how many calories I was drinking (3-4 glasses a day). I may switch to skim. Incidentally there's a no dairy group that has great recipes in it. http://teamsugar.com/group/481043

I drink Whole Foods 365 brand rice milk in plain flavor. I actually like it better than cow's milk. I just wish Starbucks would start to carry rice milk.

I've always drank skim. I recently tried soy milk. It's alright, but I'd rather have the Very Vanilla Soymilk. And I only drink it plain. It actually satisfies a dessert craving sometimes.

I have to say though, after reading all these comments I think I will pick up some almond milk next time I'm at the store!

I absolutely love Almond milk! You can get it unflavored and it has only 45 calories for one cup or if it's flavored it's 90 calories per cup.
It doesn't even taste like almonds really to me. It's delish. I highly recommend it.

i'm all about cow milk! nothing can replace it as far as i am concerned! soy milk is okay...but i'd much rather have real milk! and since i have a minor allergy to almonds...i dont think drinking almond milk every morning would be a good idea even though it sounds tempting! and how is it that 2% has less calories than whole milk??

it should be mentioned that light soymilk is much less caloric and more comparable to skim milk. silk light for example only had 70 calories for serving, and isn't as thick and creamy as a lot of soymilks, which people might prefer if they are used to drinking skim.

I read in an article that organic whole milk is prob the best choice because they add all these hormones and animal fat in skim milk to compensate for the natural fat lost. Anyone know anything about that?

Rice milk is awesome, almond milk not so much....

I wish my local coffee place used rice milk, but I think it doesn't froth up properly and that's why they don't use it...

Dairy products have always made me physically ill (sinus and stomach problems). Since I went vegan, I use silk soy milk, sometimes rice milk and sometimes almond milk. But love silk the best.

I have tried hemp milk and it was totally gross!! I can't even compare anything to how bad it tasted.

As far as starbucks.. you can bring your own milk in and they will fix a drink for you with it. The one by me does anyway. I order soy myself, but my brother brings in almond milk and they always fix his drinks with it.

I usually just drink plain ol' skim milk, but I do like the taste of rice milk ok. I had no idea heavy cream had so many calories in it...holy COW. No wonder all of those recipes on Food Network have a bazillion calories in them...lots of them call for heavy cream. Even though they always say "don't substitute milk for the heavy cream", I do it all the time in soups and stuff and have never had any problems. The only time I can think of that you couldn't substitute would be if you were making whipped cream.

yup starbucks will make you any drink with milk you bring in.
and the nutritionals on the heavy cream frighten me. one time ( as a barista ) I had someone come in and order a mocha with heavy whipping cream. they said they were on the atkins diet so it was " okay" thats 20oz of heavy whipping cream, chocolate and espresso.....

    dangggg

I'm bummed that almond milk has such a small amt. of protein. Sad Sounds counterintuitive, no?

Also, THAT much fat in heavy cream? bananas! I'm never going never homemade sweets again!

whoa yah julibul i just noticed that too
all the 2% milk ive ever known has about 130 calories/cup

and prettyeyes518, my fam only drinks "organic meadow" milk because ordinary factory farms do feed cows hormones etc (i don't know about the replacing fat thing) and i've heard rumours about how the constant milking chafes the cows udders and pus ends up in the milk (eww). organic meadow treats their cows humanely, which i think is reason enough to go organic.

I recently found out I was lactose intolerant; although I never really liked milk it's sometimes really difficult to cook generic meals without it so I used soya milk a couple of times. I can't say I like the taste though, might give almond milk a try!

Advah and all those who like me are intolerant to dairy products - check out "Recipes for Dairy-Free Living", it's an AWESOME dairy-free cookbook! Really delicious stuff, every single thing I've made from it was totally fabulous - got lots of compliments from guests Smiling
I also have "The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook" for everyday-type stuff and it's pretty good, though I haven't tried a lot from it yet.
