Now I love Kate Hudson as much as the next fan, she happens to be one of my favorite celebs. I love that she's tooling around town on a bike instead of driving in some over priced SUV. Not only is it good for the environment, but also it is good for your health. But there is one thing I don't love . . .

She's not wearing a helmet! I know helmets are not the coolest looking piece of gear while biking, but they are the most important — even I have to force myself to put on a helmet when I am cruising around town. For those of you who think you don't need a helmet when biking, I leave you with this adage that my parents always told me: There are three types of bikers: those who are going to have a crash, those who have just had a crash, and those who are going to crash again.
So wear a helmet, pretty please, even if you're just biking around town.

I couldn't agree more with your advice.
About five months ago my cousin was biking with her Father and two sons and she fell off her bike and went into a coma. Two days later she was declared brain dead and her life support machine was turned off.
She left behind two daughters and two sons, two grieving parents who will never full recover from it and a family who have lost someone really special. She was only thirty one.
I never wore a helmet when I went out on my bike - ever. Now, there isn't a chance I would get on a bike without one. It's awful that a tragedy had to befall my family for us to realise how important helmets are, but at least now I can tell other people of the importance.
Of course this wont happen to every person who gets onto a bike, but the fact is is that it could and that should be reason enough to put a helmet on. Is looking a bit dorky worth your life?
1I live in the Netherlands where you can't get around without a bike, everyone has one! So naturally I always bike wherever I go, like to university, to the store, etc. I don't wear a helmet, though, since there are bicycle roads everywhere and it seems much safer than just riding a bike on the regular road. Plus I go really slowly and ride carefully. I know that I should wear a helmet anyway, but it's really inconvenient since I bike EVERY DAY, no matter what the season: whether it's raining or snowing or really hot outside, so you can imagine somtimes i want to wear a hat, sometimes a hood, etc. Plus wearing a helmet when I bike would mean having to carry it around with me wherever I go.
2But I totally agree with tara2109 and Fitsugar on the importance of wearing a helmet if you're in a city that isn't that well adapted to cyclists, like when I'm in Kyiv (my native city), I only bike with a helmet and always remind my brothers to wear one too.
I can't even think of the last time I rode a bike, yeaaaaaaaaars.
3I have to admit I don't wear a helmet either and most of the people I see casually riding their bikes don't wear one either. Will you find us some pretty helmets, Fit? Surely there's some sleek little helmets out there somewhere that we won't be embarrassed to wear...
4No bike... no helmet here.
5Last year, my cousin had a biking accident and was killed. While wearing a helmet wouldn't have made a difference for him, I urge all bikers to be safe and avoid roads that don't accommodate bikers
6I'm a cyclist and I wouldn't consider getting on my bike without a helmet. The cycling club I'm a member of has at least five members that've been in serious accidents involving motor vehicles. One guy had to have his face, jaw and teeth reconstructed. I believe that many drivers see us as a nuisance and have no respect of pedestrians or cyclists, others just lousy, reckless drivers. GIRO makes some cool chick helmets if you want to get into the $100's. Actually, I picked up a cute Bell brand at WalMart a couple years ago for around $20.
7I really should wear my helmet when I bike, but I tend to only wear it when I'm biking in the city when I'm around a lot of cars. When I bike on bike trails, I tend to think I'm immune to head injuries or something.
8i've been biking for 5 years now and have never had a crash. i don't wear helmet, but mostly because it was something nobody did... now in London i would definitely wear one, as i'd be riding along with the cars...
