Tampons and Yogurt: Perfect Together?

If you feel a little weird about putting chemicals on your privates to deal with yeast infections, check out these home remedies (some are a little wild):

  • Douche with apple cider vinegar: Mix 1 tablespoon vinegar with a quart of water.
  • Tea tree oil suppositories: You can buy them at health food stores. Just insert one at bedtime (make sure to wear a pantyliner). They are supposed to be quite cooling.
  • Use PLAIN yogurt (no flavors or fruit - just PLAIN) that contains active cultures. Dip a tampon into the yogurt and insert it inside you. Leave it in for an hour or so. It's cool and soothing, and gets the "good" bacteria right where you need it. Do it once or twice a day, until the situation resolves itself.
  • Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with 8 ounces of lukewarm water and drink it (not a good idea for those with weak stomachs). It tastes disgusting, but supposedly works like a charm.
  • Take cranberry extract or cranberry blueberry extract pills - they are a great preventative measure and contain antioxidants for your overall health.
  • Bring a squeeze bottle of honey in the bathroom with you. Sit over the toilet and pour a liberal amount into your hand. Spread it all over the infected area and sit there for at least 5 minutes (or as long as you can). The bad bacteria cannot survive due to the "good" bacteria found in the honey. Take a nice bath to wash off the honey.

Let me know if you've got any more home remedies, or tried any of the above remedies. I'd love to hear about them.

WOW!? I know that all of these remedies are probably healthier than just getting something from the drug store, but I am a bit too old school/chicken sh*t to try them!

Fit, don't forget to mention that the honey should be unpasteurized honey! No bacteria in pasteurized honey...

That's crazy. I've never had a yeast infection so I don't know, but I cannot imagine myself desperate enough to slather honey on myself or dip my tampon in yogurt. Hopefully I will never be that desperate!

I'm glad to know foxy21 has tried it though, cuz just reading it without any personal reviews, I would be scared to death to try any of these things!

I have tried the apple cider treatment and it does work. It helps to balance the Ph levels which inturn kills the yeast. Eating yogurt or acidophilus drinks it great too. Eating yorgurt with live cultures is a good way to prevent those infections form even starting.

I don't know why, but I am with your rubiala, the honey treatment kiinda freaks me out too.

I stick with Acidophlis inserts and tampon in yogurt to keep a balance. They both work great! I deal with BV and Yeast so I never know which one it is. I am afraid to medicate that can make it worse if I treat for the wrong one.

Just be careful if you have any tiny cuts or abrasions if you try the vinegar treatment, because any teeny, tiny cut with burn like crazy! Smiling

Huh. Apple cider vinegar. Never heard of that... Tried the tea tree oil suppositories - a nature friend recommended it. They worked great, but burned a little in the beginning.

Although I completely agree with seeing a doctor, some women may feel too embarrassed to go see one every time they think they have a yeast infection.

Plus, by the time they get an appointment, their symptoms will have driven them crazy. These alternatives might be a great option to use before you get the chance to have yourself checked out.

I don't every really get this problem, perhaps just very very, almost undetectably mildly, but not often either. And that only really tends to happen when I drink alcohol more then a few days a month (more like a few +, days a week if I'm on a roll).

I eat several or more servings of cultured milk products a week though, like yogurt, keifer, & cottage cheese, & occasionally I give myself a good dose of the friendly flora through a bottle of probiotics from the store. I don't eat processed foods at all, I also don't eat very much white sugar (even though I do have probably about 1 or 2 Tablespoons of it everyday), so I think that all helps.

I have had past experience with this & I think cleaning up my lifestyle has definitely helped it. I also haven't been on antibiotics or anything like that in the last 5 years, and nothing every really strong before that.

I'm with Fit on this one. I do agree if you can get in to see your doctor you should do so ASAP, but in most cases (like Fit said) you'll be facing a two to ten day wait to get in to see someone.

Last year I had a terrible case of pneumonia that required my hospitalization. I was so dehydrated that when they finally got the IV into me, and I became hydrated enough to actually go to the bathroom my urine was black as coffee (sorry, guys!). Well the toxins in my system and the antibiotics they had me taking left me with one heck of an infection down under. But it didn't appear until I left the hospital and was at home one night (typical).

It came on all of a sudden, went from zero itch to "Can I borrow that BBQ brush?". And it was after the drugstore was closed, and there is no 24 hour pharmacy in town. And I was still sicker than death. I suffered for about six hours then decided I'd go to the hospital. Feeling stupid, I told the Emerg Doc what was wrong and asked if they had anything I could use to get rid of the itch. He said no, but he'd be happy to write me a prescription. Two hours waiting in the Emergency Department, squirming in a plastic chair waiting with other sick people when I was already at death's door and all I got was a prescription.

So what did I do? I sat in the parking lot of the mall waiting for the drugstore to open. I waited for three hours.

My point is if I had known about any of the above I would have tried it just to alleviate some of the suffering while I waited for the pharmacy to open. I still would have gone to the doctor if something OTC didn't work (because I never get these unless I'm on really strong antibiotics). But in a town where they roll up the sidewalks at 4pm most days you really don't have many options. Personally, if it was a choice between suffering for eight to ten hours (or even days) or just trying something that MIGHT help...it'll be "Pass me the honey, honey, and don't ask me where I'm going with it!".

JK boogie, I don't think it's sad or disgusting to try home remedies - a lot of the time I've tuned out my mother's advice to see a doctor...only to hear the same thing from him! Teabags on the eyes for styes, two glasses of orange juice in cold season, milk with honey when you can't sleep - all of this sounds pretty ridiculous, but it's all been proven to have medicinal value. I wouldn't outright dismiss a remedy just because it doesn't have a prescription attached to it.

i think a better description of this article would be home remedies for vaginal itch, because a regular person can't diagnose themselves with a yeast infection. in fact, most women do diagnose themselves and go to the store and use the OTC products, and once they really DO get an infection, the OTC products don't work because they've used them too much.

if your symptoms are severe and you're pretty sure you have a yeast infection, go to the doctor. i don't know about you guys, but i have a walk-in clinic that i can go to without an appointment THAT DAY to see a doctor (even my doctor), so you don't have to sit there itching for a week. i think a good disclaimer for this article would be "nothing's better than talking to a licensed, educated, knowledgeable practitioner."

Just to throw a little more fuel on the fire... My doctor actually mentioned eating foods with live cultures (yogurt), taking a probiotic supplement, and yes, "applying yogurt topically". He's a fully licensed MD, a totally normal doctor. He wrote me a prescription for the one-dose oral remedy, but we talked about other options as well. I wouldn't try home remedies without discussing them with your doctor, I just wanted to point out that not all of them are total BS, some of them have some science behind them.

Ok, these are great ideas, I can't wait to try. I've had a yeast infection for over 6 months straight now. I've been to 4 doctors and they all agree that it is nothing but a yeast infection. I've been treated in 4 different ways as well as over the counter stuff. I'm desperate.
