OK, so yes, it is very hard to drag yourself out of bed before the sun rises, but there are some fabulous benefits to working out in the morning. (What time do you like to work out?) Here are my top five favorite things about morning workouts:
- Knowing that the workout is over before the day has even begun (and the kids and dog have woken up).
- Getting energy to fuel my day from working out instead of coffee.
- Drinking lots of water before 9 a.m.
- Not having to fight the lunch or after-work traffic at the gym (and on the road).
- Learning that I am a morning person after all.

Working out at 5:30 in the morning 6 days a week means that it's over with and I don't have to dread a workout all day long!
1My all-time favorite thing: getting it over with. Oh yeah, and being all perky and awake is nice too
2my trainer said that it's the best time to work out. I work from home so it seems like it should be easy, but I start work at 6 and I don't want to wake up earlier than that haha
3Well just like most things, I'll give it a shot! Maybe Monday morning I'll try it out!
working out in the am helps me transition between being asleep and being awake.
4I love having my evenings free to do whatever I like, but my favorite thing is that at 7 the gym is practically deserted! I can workout and not think about who I might run into or if I'll have to wait for a treadmill.
I didn't go this morning and now I'm on here, putting off going now.
5I like getting it over with
6I get it over with and it helps wake me up. The lack on people chit chatting on machines is nice too!
7I'm more likely to workout if I stick to an AM schedule...once I start pushing it back into the afternoon and evening, I'll start creating reasons after reasons in my head why I shouldn't!
8My problem is that I wake up hungry, then if I eat, I don't like to workout just after.
Any suggestions to fix this?
9In the summer, I like to get up around 5 AM to jog before the sunrise, and then I watch the sunrise over the river while i'm stretching.......mmmm that's really one of my favorite things in life!!!
10I like working out in the morning because I'm less likely to skip. What I miss from a morning work out, however, is the stress release. I don't generally wake up stressed and it's nice to go to the gym after class to de-stress.
11100% agree that it gives you energy. That's my #1 reason for going in the morning. I don't even need to drink a cup of coffee in the morning if I've already gone to the gym.
Also, I don't know about anybody else, but at my gym... the people that go to the gym in the morning are either people that are serious about their workouts or they are older people. I don't feel self-conscious about getting sweaty and gross in front of them. But the people that go to my gym right after work tend to include a lot of people that are just there to ogle and flirt. I only go in the evenings if my boyfriend is with me.
12Suggestion for Casasailer: eat something small and light like a yoghurt or a banana immediately after waking up, then while you're brushing your teeth and changing from your PJs into your sports gear, it will settle down a bit in your stomach, and you can excersise safely.
13I was gonna say the same thing behemoth! I like a banana or a breakfast-type bar for some energy without being overly full at the gym
14My favorite part is the accountability! The main thing that has kept me working out in the morning (M,W,F only) is this aerobics class I go to. It's called Bootcamp and it's old-school, we jump rope, do a bunch of calisthenics, and then we get down to it and BOX! The class is pretty much like a lil family, it's the same people every day, and it's a small group. I know if I don't show, they'll be asking me, "Where ya been??". Plus the instructor is a former boxer and is the "tough-love" kinda guy. His favorite thing to shout at us is "Come on! This ain't yoga!"
If it weren't for this class I would of slacked off with the morning gym routine! I love the benefit of having it behind me. Sometimes I go and do more cardio after work too! (but not too often!)
15I workout at 5am each morning ... my favorite thing is the glow I have from it! Lasts all day AND it encourages me to eat much better all day.
16I have so much energy in the morning so I always get a great workout!
My favorite reason though is that I don't have time to make excuses and talk myself out of going! I go to the gym SO much more consistently now that I go in the mornings than when I went after work.
Also, I tend to get stomachaches in the afternoons which sometimes keep me from working out. Working out in the mornings keeps this from interferring. I don't have any problems working out after having a bowl of oatmeal.
17I made the switch to am workouts a few months ago and it has made such a huge difference - I place my clothes and bag in the family room so I can wake up and close the ebdroom door, not waking my husband. I leave, enjoy some mindles morning radio and get to the gym while it's dark. An hour or so later, I hit the showers with sunlight starting to stream in and I head home by 8am. It makes me feel accomplished, fresh, healthy and totally energized - I've pretty much stopped drinking Americanos.
Sometimes I get a wee bit sleepy around 10am and I may take a brief nap (I'm a fulltime freelance writer so I can, fortunately) but not too often. I do this routine during the week, on weekends, even on hoidays. Love it! Like loveyoumeanit said, I didn't go this morning and now I'm at home, totally not motivated to hit the gym.
18I know...I want too...
19But I leave my house at 7 anywyas and I cannot fathom leaving (or getting up) any earlier.
530 am daily for me.
It is the BEST to get it over with and start the day right.
And since I run outside, I get to see the sunrise everyday. I look forward to it.
20If I work out in the morning I'm usually too groggy to think up a decent excuse not to. Talking myself out of a workout is so much more likely to happen if I put it off.
Working out in the morning gives me a chance to collect my thoughts and plan my day, plus it's so much easier to make healthy food choices for the rest of that day.
21By the time I'm done with class and work (all in one day), the only thing I want to do is collapse on the coutch and watch a movie. By working out in the A.M., I don't feel guilty if I do exactly that!!
22I work out as soon as I wake up because otherwise, I probably won't feel like doing it later. I also get all energized when I work out first thing in the morning and I feel like I've accomplished something before the day even begins.
23i love the energy it gives me so i don't have to rely on coffee. and i like the feeling of feeling a little accomplished and productive even before the day begins.
24I catch a workout anytime I can right now but I miss my morning workouts. I have 2 more classes until I finish my masters degree then I can get back on track. Between school, work, a 5 year old, a 2 year old and a needy husband I am just too dang tired int he morning but I will be glad to rejoin the "I got it done before anyone work up" club!
25haha
26that kinda convinces me to wrokout int he am. lol
Luckily i'm a morning person so waking up early to exercise isn't a biggy for me...but I give myself a morning off a week...just to have a nice Lay-in bfore work.
27You guys make me want to get up early and work out!! The only problem will be getting enough sleep.
I go to bed late as it is! For all of you who get up at 5/5:30, what time do you go to bed?
28blondie829 - I get up around 5 or 5:30 and I try to go to bed at 10. Sometimes it's as late as 11:30 if I have a lot of work to do (i'm a grad student), but I start feeling like it's bed time at 10.
29I got to bed around 9.30pm which is really early...I start winding myself down at about 9. If I can't sleep I do a couple of menial tasks like folding washing or reading a book...but I'm lucky most night as soon as my head hits the pillow i'm gone!
30The idea of getting up at 5:30 makes me want to cry. Even if it's for something as good as a workout.
31I love when I'm in the habit of getting up early and going to the gym. I've gotten out of the habit since I've been teaching a dance class until 9:30, so it throws off my rhythm. But since I'm training for a half marathon, I've been trying to get my runs in the morning on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, as I work out with a few friends from work on Mondays and Thursdays and do a group run on Saturdays.
I feel energized, refreshed and ready to tackle the day - and it usually prevents me from needing morning caffeine!
32love be at home early and full of energy, and its so much easy eat good all day
33Agreed! Getting to the gym by 6 means I only need 1 cup of coffee instead of the 4 I used to drink. When I went after work there were so many things that would get in the way: 1) having to work late, 2) it was crowded, 3) after work plans with friends. Getting into the habit was hard, but it is definitely worth it. I almost never miss a workout now, and my general disposition in the mornings is so much sunnier
For anyone having a hard time getting out of bed you can try what I did in the beginning (and what I still do now on the particularly tough mornings). I created a playlist called "Wake Up" and it has all of my favorites on it: from fun stuff to hyper work out stuff. As soon as my alarm goes off the headphones go on. Hope that helps!
34My fav reason to work out in the morning is that i always fall asleep thinking about the things i'll do the next day and i usually get around to them if i have a good healthy start. it's the best motivation for having a good day -- knowing that i already took care of myself first thing. if i talk myself out of working out, i feel like the day is already messed up and i don't try to check anything else off my to-do list.
like lfalardeau, music in the morning is a must. but i can't be bothered to put on headphones in the morning, so i leave my iPod alarm to play my wake up playlist in my iPod speaker. the lifesaver for me has been that i selected songs that start off slowly but pick up and rock out, so as i wake up it's gentle and then it makes me want to get up and dance as it goes on (i.e. kelly clarkson-- miss independent).
