I recently read an article that opened my eyes up to the fact that exercise is very uncool among certain groups, particularly the hipster population. Running shoes, sweating, and "caring" being the top reasons exercise loses cool points in such circles.
WTF!?
Since when has doing something healthy for your body become uncool? Is it cooler to say you're going to hit some independent band's underground show than to say you're going to hit the gym? I mean, I know there are a lot of questionable health products out there, but if exercising is uncool then I'd have to be just about the uncoolest person out there and I couldn't care less. (Does not caring make me cool again?) Am I alone here — what do you guys think? Speak up and share your thoughts in the comments section below. Is exercise uncool?

i think perhaps what the hipsters think is "uncool" about working out is that it can be perceived as buying into the whole skinny-fashion-model thing...instead of just caring about your health.
i definitely disagree that working out is uncool, and i'm only 23, so that means i still fit into the "young and cool" crowd, right?
1Exercise is definitely not uncool. That's honestly one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.
2I sooo disagree that working out is uncool. If anything where I'm at If you get to the gym in a day you sooo get props. I'm 21 and In college ...granted its an all womens college but still trust me the precentage of those who don't work out in some form is much less than the percentage of us who do.
Thats just a funny statement that workouts are 'uncool'...reminds me of like the 90's guess/calvin Klein models manatra...even models work out ...
3lol...but hipsters also don't eat.
4I think it's cool! And my opinion is the only one that matters hahahahaha
5Actually if you think about it, I think that exercising it thought of as 'uncool' back for highschoolers, they want to be ultra skinny/ultra hot without having to do anything really, except for perhaps sports or cheerleading. But once you hit college you move away from that and realize that it actually is uber cool:) Plus with all the hot workout clothes out there like BebeSport, I mean you look amazing while you are working out!
6exercise is ALWAYS gonna be uncool to a group of folks that generally have no background in working out for fitness sake and choose to be negative. it is easy to mock activities you don't do. i wouldn't generally classify "hipsters" as being the only anti-workout purveyors because there are lazy folks who choose to mock instead of act in any clique.
7I have a hard time buying into this one. I don't think exercising should be about cool or uncool, it is simply about health. Being active and working out has so many benefits, it seems ridiculous that anyone would not workout simply because they didn't want to be perceived as someone who cared. Very strange! I guess I'll continue to be uncool while running around in my workout gear and athletic shoes even hours after or before I hit the gym.
8this is ridiculous!! hipsters can think of the most ridiculous stuff!!
9i think that statements like that are amusing. you're an individual so you can do what you want. if ppl don't want to work out - then that's their thing - but to say that trying to be healthy is uncool - then what is? smoking and going to get fast food ?
10They're too busy crying and writing in their Live Journals about crying.
11I particularly enjoy the reasoning for said uncoolness, especially "caring". I laughed so hard at that for a long time. For some reason though, that sentiment goes beyond hipsters. I work with a collection of people who also poo-poo my post work day trip to the gym and make dumb comments like "I only run if I get chased."
12Lol, that's an interesting article, I wonder where they got their info?
I'm 19 and I go to UC Davis and going to the gym is one of the only cool things to do in Davis, so about half the time when you ask someone what they're doing after class, they say that they're going to the gym.
It's not really about "caring" about your health per se, because the gym is also a total meat market, so really it's just a place to be seen, looking good while sweating it out, which has actually made me feel like I should skip the gym when I'm having a bad hair/fat day.
13haha miss priss, that's funny
14I love working out and could care less who thinks it is uncool, or even cool for that matter. I also love to read. I also love to garden. I also love to cook. Am I the most uncool person ever? Oh, wait. I don't care.
15i guess i'm uncool then. but if my butt looks better than theirs because I work out, well i'm cool with that!
16I will ditto word for word what adelka said! And I will add... those "hipsters" who say exercise is uncool... that is their excuse for being lazy.
17I don't think hipsters think exercise is "uncool." I know so many who do yoga.
18Hmmm I think it's cool...
19come on, hipsters. how are you going to fit into your skinny jeans in ten years if you don't exercise? it's a win-win situation.
20that's so stupid its like people are just looking for excuses not to excersize that's like the most important thing for us!
I'm sorry but i cant live without running i would just die.
21Hipsters probably just think the whole gym-addicted, tan-aholic, bleached hair, airhead thing is uncool, and view working out as part of that. Hipsters are generally somewhat health-conscious and do things like yoga, dancing, and pilates.
22something's always gonna be uncool-caring about politics was uncool for a while b/c that's what people did in the 60s and 70s.
23in my mind, if you try to be cool rather than try to be yourself, you're automatically uncool.
I agree with Mandy-
I always thought hipsters were health conscious and sort of live by a I don't care what is cool or what isn't policy.
either way I like that you used the fanny pac pic for the uncool exercising entry!
24Actually, where I'm from and the people I hang out with, it really isn't cool to go to the gym. I'm 20 and in university and I live with the tennis coach and the head cheerleader for our university and neither of them ever go to the gym. When I come home half dead and not looking too fab it's laugh worthy to them.
Most of my friends never work out, wouldn't even know where a gym was. I think it isn't about 'trying' or 'caring' so much as being sweaty and out of breath doesn't appeal to them.
Also! I would agree with them on this one, there aren't really many cool clothes to where. FitSugar posts things all the time and they're nice and all, but do you ever see a sports trainer (for running) that looks like a pair of Vans/Etnies? Most sports gear (at least in the shops in my area) just have 'NIKE' on them and are in odd colours and sometimes can look really quite manly.
To hipsters, looking stylish is important and slugging your guts out on a treadmill doesn't look very chic, so I can see why they wouldn't go. I don't agree with it but I can understand it.
Lol @ onion waffle - the cocaine usually keeps them pretty slim

26ugh. if i ever listened to anything those hipster, try to hard to be cool, my diet consists of drinking/smoking, please someone shoot me.
27Hipsters tend to smoke and NOT eat. AND they go to clubs/shows alot. I don't think they live healthy...some are "vegans" but eat french fries everyday.
28I have to say I also found the "caring" reason humorous. I used to work for an alternative paper and their editorial department was what I like to call "The Trendily Un-Trendy". They spent just as much time trying to avoid the "in" thing as those people they can't stand. Such a waste of time if you ask me. Do what you like to do and what makes you feel good about yourself...that's what's cool!
29this is reeeeeee-diculous!
30ps- what EXACTLY is a "hipster"?
31I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's true. When I tell my friends or roommates that I go running before class every other day, I think they find it a little uncool. People will be like "oh, you're thin you don't need to workout," or something like that. I think they're either jealous of my willpower, or they think that I "care" too much like you said.
32is that pic from the 80s?
33Say it with me... JEALOUSY!!! Just because their bellies hang over their pants from too many Pabst Blue Ribbons and sleep deprivation from hanging out in noisy, overrated bars... they think they have the market cornered on cool, but wait until no more young hipster girls will want to date your over 30 -love handles- and- smokers cough- havin' self!
34I've seen plenty of hipsters with a big ol' muffin top hanging over their skinny jeans and stretching out that ironic, faux-faded vintage style t-shirt. Maybe they should reconsider their cool points rating system.
35I think it's considered cooler than it used to be. It's become really trendy with all the choices of gyms to join, different programs like tae bo and pole dancing, etc. (of course hipsters will do anything to avoid a trend though, unless it's popular with other hipsters) I also think that the constant attention that celebrities get for it helps too. Many people see celebrities as role models, and that helps inspire them to work out in the same way. It's encouraging too to see a celebrity work out knowing they work for that body and you could get the same benefits. However, I also think a lot of people are fascinated by skinny, unhealthy people. There's always a fascination with the girl who eats whatever she wants, doesn't work out, and has a perfect body. I think sometimes girls want to be that way and they won't admit to exercising or eating healthy. I don't really understand that though. There's nothing wrong with admitting that your body is a product of hard work and not genetics, and there's also nothing wrong with telling people that you care and you are healthy.
36I have never heard that exercise is uncool. I think it is the coolest thing going. It has helped me drop 20lbs. so far. I am now in my own BMI range for my body---woo hoo! it didn't cost me a whole bunch of money either. I just had to change my mindset about finding the time to exercise. I learned how to play tennis this summer, and that has really helped work my core and my balance. I also walk 4.2 miles every day, and in August i started keeping a log of miles walked. Since August 27th I have walked nearly 500 miles. I even walk at night, and in all kinds of weather. I purchased a light that fits onto a baseball cap at Walmart for about ten bucks. I also really watch what I put into my mouth. But, if I am really craving something that is not so good for me like potato chips, I go to the store and buy a very small eI think exercise has really changed my life for the better and what could be cooler than that?
37Last time I checked, nothing is cool enough for hipsters. Except themselves. And some band they'll make sure you've never heard of.
38Interesting, this poll was taken in Minneapolis and in 07 Men's Health Mag rated Minneapolis as one of the top 10 Most Fitttest Cities in the US. http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/0...
So, they're a fit city yet think exercise is un-cool? How does that happen?
39if sweating is un-cool then I am in serious trouble.
40I don't think that exercise is uncool. It's not necessarily cool, but it's definitely not uncool. But it's definitely cool if you are healthy, fit, trim and have high self-confidence.
41Where I go to college, people assume that you are lazy if you don't go to the gym practically everyday and it's not uncommon to hear people bragging about how long they spent at the gym. Sure, no one wants to be see looking all crazy after a sweat session, but it sure beats people thinking you never move fast enough to sweat at all.
42Okay, maybe it's just me, but I think that this same population also think eating isn't terribly cool. I think they really look down on the whole gym rat thing, but a lot of them are uber-skinny anyway, so I think health in general isn't a huge priority. The hipsters just think, "look at that conforming schlub eating and laughing and working out and being soo generic, gah I bet she shops at Williams Sonoma on her way home from Yoga." I think they just think those of us who try to work out are generic and unoriginal for caring about fitness and health when we could just be like..."f*ck it, we're way too cool for this, it's not like we're going to die tomorrow anyway."
43Hipsters...taking nonconformity to a whole new level of conformity since 2003.
44I think sweating your guts out at the gym is uncool, I guess I associate gyms with people who are trying to loose weight because I have a friend who has some serious issues and she goes several times a day and calculate how many calories shes burned and therefore how much she can eat that day. The gym is so artificial, why run on a treadmill in the gym, looking at a tv screen with your headphones in your ears when you could run in the park with your friends??
What is cool, in my opinion, is exercising socially, i.e. swing and jive dancing at a jazz club, team sports, walking/running in parks with friends.
But yes, the hipsters, they just smoke and have a party lifestyle to stay thin, they'll regret it when they get old.
45body looks great because of exercises, yeah indeed, exercising is not cool, it's HOT
46OK, I've NEVER been cool, so maybe I just don't get it. But, if not caring is part of who you are, then why would you care whether exercise is cool or not? Why would you care whether ANYTHING is cool or not? It just seems to me that, for a bunch of folks who claim not to care what people think, they spend an awful lot of time trying to figure out ways to make other people think they're cool.
47Does that make any sense?
BTW, I think exercise is MUCH cooler than being jaded and cynical. But that's just me, one of the uncool ones.
I may be vastly uncooler than the hipsters of New York, but I'm the one that's going to beat them down the stairs to catch the subway...and that's when I'm carrying 2 bags full of books and wearing four-inch heels...because I work out.
48i would say that hipsters definitely think organized exercising such as at a gym is uncool. this is because a lot of them believe in walking and bikes as a means of transportation. this keeps u in shape. also, a lot of them just drink beer...like my friends. they all have skinny legs and beer guts. it's odd.
49What's with the hipster bashing? I've seen it so many times on this site. No one should ever be lumped into categories like that. Especially just because they dress a certain way.
I get the hipster label on the time- and I work out and eat well. I don't do coke, I'm not anorexic, and I'm not so wrapped up in being "cool" that I can't put forth the effort to take care of myself.
Also- ever hear of a fixed gear bike? Don't they go hand in hand with being a "hipster"? That's one hell of a workout. I should know- I ride one.
