Sore throats are a common side effect of colds and flu, but also of dry, over-heated homes. Postnasal drip from colds and open-mouth breathing due to nasal congestion can both create sore throats. Although sore throats like these are generally worse in the morning and calm down as the day progresses, it is still nice to soothe the pain. At least you can swallow without pain and eat. Here are some home remedies for soothing a sore throat:
- Gargle several times a day with warm salt water using 1/2 tsp. of salt in 1 cup warm water.
- Some people find relief by gargling warm water mixed with cayenne, but do not exceed 1/8 tsp. of the hot stuff. The pepper acts like an anesthetic and numbs the pain.
- Tea or simply warm water sweetened with honey, which can help relieve coughing, too.
- Combine many of the above treatments together and add some vinegar! This spicy, old home remedy is made by adding one tsp. of apple-cider vinegar, a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper, juice from 1/4 lemon, and one tsp. honey to a cup of hot water. Drink four cups per day.
- Cold liquids or popsicles help some sore throats and this is a winning technique with children, young and old.
- Sucking on hard candies or throat lozenges (I like Ricola cough drops) can be very soothing, because it increases saliva production and helps keep the throat moist.
- Use a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier to moisten and sooth a dry and painful throat.
- You can always try over-the-counter pain medications, such as acetaminophen to help dull the pain.

This would have been nice two weeks ago haha!
1when me and my sis were young and had a sore throat/cold my mom used to make jello for us... but serve it to us warm from the stove...it was sweet and soothing and the gelatin helped to *temporarily* coat our throats.....
2a tablespoon of honey REALLY helps a sore throat, and it's sooo delicious.
3I could use these tips right about now. I always get a sore throat when it's rainy.
4The saltwater works great!
5Yes!!! Saltwater... Fit, listen to your mother
NMther always said to gargle with salt water
6i love this sore throat kids organic tea my friend gave me. I don't like honey, but I bet agave nectar would work?
7My boyfriends been sick for a week and I just started feeling a scratchy throat, so I want to hurry up and fix this!
My boss is Russian and a world renown research scientist. He insists the best treatment is to gargle with Brandy. Oddly enough, I haven't tried it yet
8Try a hot toddy: Whisky, hot water, lemon and honey. Really helps me when I have a cold. It's a Scottish drink.
9I drink lots of tea with honey (peppermint herbal tea is my fave, and I let it steep for a really long time) but my coworker puts cherry brandy in her tea.
10My mom always had my sister and I gargle with salt water when we were sick as little girls and I still do it when I have a cold/sore throat!
11My husband had the worst sore throat he's ever had about two weeks ago and I pulled out every home remedy in the book. The best ones were: gargling with the salt water, drinking hot mint tea with honey, eating a spoon of honey plain, and eating popsicles. Just make sure that your sore throat is being caused by a cold and isn't Strep. If you do have Strep, you'll need antibiotics to clear that up.
12I've been doing the salt-water thing for years lol. I rarely get sick though, but when I do, it's that darn sore throat. As soon as you start to feel your throat is a little ehhh, also drink lots of orange juice and sleep ASAP. That's what I always do and I don't have a sore throat for longer than 3 days at the max.
13I'll have to try some of these...I have a sore throat today!
14lemon and honney
