Don't Touch That Wart

No - you can't get warts from touching toads, but I just read that warts can be passed from one person to another.

Warts are caused by a human papillomavirus (HPV), and there are more than 100 types. Warts can grow on all parts of your body (and I mean ALL). Some viruses can cause warts to grow on your hands or feet, while others can cause warts to grow on your genitals and rectal area (not fun).

Some people are naturally resistant to the HPV virus and never get warts, while others seem to get warts more often than the snow falls in winter.

Warts should be treated because it'll decrease your chance of spreading more warts to the rest of your body (and to other people). Plus, warts can be painful if they're in an area where they get bumped a lot. They can also be a little embarrassing, like if they're on your face.

Warts will often go away on their own, but it may take several months or years even. If they get to be too annoying, you can get an over-the-counter treatment (these should NOT be used for genital warts). Or you can go see a dermatologist to have them removed.

There are a few choices in how to treat warts. Want to hear about them? Then read more

  • Apply salicylic acid: This is good for warts that appear on the hands, feet, or knees - apply the acid daily for many weeks after a bath or shower.
  • Duct tape treatment (this is for real): Cover the wart with duct tape for up to a week - this irritates the skin and causes your body to attack it. Repeat this for up to 2 months - if it doesn't work, see a doctor.
  • Liquid nitrogen: Your doctor may use this to freeze the wart, which may hurt a little. This may need to be repeated up to 4 times to remove the wart.

If none of the above work, your doctor may have to resort to other treatments such as burning the wart, cutting the wart off, or removing it with a laser. These work really well, and quickly, but often leave a scar.

I had a wart on my foot frozen whit nitrogen when I was about ten. And it doesn't hurt a little, it hurts like HELL! I can still feel it if I think about it And the worst part is: it didn't even help!

All of these treatments seem a bit ridiculous, and NONE of them can guarantee effectiveness -- plus they all take a long time.

Yikes! Warts are pernicious little buggers.

I know this may seem out there...but you have to trust me. I have Indian roots in my blood, and an old medicine woman gave me the best advice I can ever offer to anyone suffering from warts. I used to have tons of them covering my knuckles. After having them frozen, burnt, and trying every trick in the book, I decided to apply what she taught me. Use the inside of a banana peel to treat warts. Rub the banana peel directly on the area of the wart, 3 times daily. In about a month you can say goodbye to those unflattering warts for good.(that's how long it took for mine to go away, it may vary depending on the size) I've had plantar's on my feet and it works like a charm. If you're as desperate as I was to have pretty hands take my word and apply this tip!

Missyp, that's a really great tip! Next time someone I know gets a wart I'll tell them about it! Do you have other homemade solutions like this one?

i don't have any other remedies for warts, simply b/c this one works. i have alot of really random things that i've picked up over the years. Due to the success of the bananas, i've come to trust the medicine woman's advice.

I had warts on my hands when I was in middle school and nothing worked to remove them. My mom (who's a doc) told me to pinch them several times a day... not too hard, just hard enough to feel a little bit of discomfort. Basically, it alerts your immune system that there's something wrong in that region and it will work to get rid of the virus. Voila, it worked!

(And I would recommend against using Duct Tape-->it is said to be carcinogenic, so it seems like a bad idea to place it on your skin for long periods of time. Warts might suck, but cancer is Definitely worse)
