If you are working on a long term weight loss goal, the holiday season can pose quite a challenge.
Plentiful and ubiquitous sweets coupled with lack of time to workout can really put a wrench in your game plan. If during December you are not losing pounds in your normal fashion, focus on maintaining your weight instead. Which, in the season of sugarplums is a feat unto itself.
By focusing on maintaining your weight, you can stop beating yourself up for a stagnant scale and see the steady scale as a feat of accomplishment. To maintain your weight is not to lose sight of your goals, but to give you a little mental space so you can enjoy a bite of the gingerbread houses your coworkers made. The trick to maintaining is to take just a bite!
Come January, we can and will all return to our scheduled programs with our regular gusto!

I don't buy it. By taking just a bite, gives me permission to take a bite everywhere and where do those bites end. Those bites add up to pounds so I don't take any bites and I appreciatingly decline all of them - even if it is the holidays. I'm so glad I'm not really one for sweets either, that's really a blessing.
1Urg holidays! Always messing up my excerise and dieting
2my b/f and I just joined a gym for this very reason. We're going to start trying to lose weight and get back in shape but for the next 2 weeks, I'm just trying to NOT gain weight! Hope it works!
3I agree. Cut yourself some slack ladies and come Jan 1 get it in gear!
4the mood.. kinda hard to even 'maintain' weight during the holidays.. because i'm the type of person who doesn't really know 'self-control' regarding to good food! once i pop i can't stop! haha
5That take a bite stuff is just unrealistic. Eat a portion, 1 or 2 cookies(yeah, yesterday I had 4) and then watch the sweets the rest of the day.
6just avoid those bad foods. I know it's hard but you don't have to eat it.
7This is exactly where I'm at right now. After several virtous days of not cheating on all the goodies around me, the scale hasn't budged. I'm trying to cut myself some slack right now, I should definitely be happy with the maintenance only, but it's not easy.
Also, I'm so afraid to backtrack if I don't stick with a strict calories schedule, so that makes it difficult too.
8I've gone into maintenance mode for the holidays. I've done really well losing weight on SparkPeople.com and have hit my goal. I want to lower my goal and lose a bit more, but I'm not even going to attempt it until after the holidays. I hate going to parties and not getting to eat anything, so I do get to cheat a little, but only in moderation still!
9I don't think that just taking a bite is unrealistic. It works for me all the time. It is just a matter of knowing your self and weather or not you can take a bite and finding what works for you. Even if that is having no cookies or having a few cookies. As long as you have a plan for it it's okay.
