The holidays are upon us, which means so is shopping. Whether you're jumping for joy or shuddering it's pretty much unavoidable.
This means that the food court is also relatively unavoidable, so I've come up with a few ideas to help you survive the food court while shopping this holiday season (and beyond).
- Part One: Stick to places that actually offer healthy fare.
- Part Two: Bring your own snacks.
- Part Three: Skip dessert shops altogether.
If you have your own tip for navigating your way through the food court without consuming a few hundred extra calories, then share them in the comments section below.

my local mall has a japanese place in its food court which has some light, healthy options like vegetable sushi or miso soup. there is also a smoothie stand which can be healthy if you get a smoothie with just fruit and keep the size small.
1If I eat in the food court, which isn't too often, I usually get a sub or sandwich from Subway or Quizno's. Or maybe a slice of pizza.
But I'd rather eat in a sit-down restaurant.
2I don't believe in the notion that the foodcourt is "rarely unavoidable." It's totally avoidable. I haven't eaten in a food court or fast food restaurant in seven years. If you plan a day out shopping, take a pria bar, baggie of almonds, some granola to munch on, an apple - or all of the above and graze all day. Your glycemic index will remain elevated and you'll have energy the whole day instead of crashing after that sub or slice of pizza. I get mad when the media tells us something is "unavoidable" or that we "need" it because we don't.
3Agreed with Pixie, but holy crap, eat before you leave and don't spend six hours in a mall!! I'm sorry, but that just sounds like absolute hell to me. When my girlfriends and I plan on going on an extended shopping trip, we get together beforehand and make healthy, protien loaded brunches. Then the plan is, shop til we're hungry again, and go home!! You can always go back the next day/weekend. Gracious.
