Self magazine has surveyed cities nationwide to find out exactly where the healthiest and unhealthiest spots are for women — I am happy to say that my gorgeous town of San Francisco was number one! Woot, woot! From walkable neighborhoods, plentiful scenic trails, and offices that encourage exercise breaks, San Francisco has got it going on.

The runners up were:
- Nassau-Suffolk counties, NY
- San Jose, CA
- Honolulu, HI
- Burlington, VT

If you live in Gary, Indiana, then you're not going to be pleased to hear that it was named the unhealthiest city for women in America. From women there reporting they feel depressed at least four days a month to more than one in five of them reported to smoke on top of them being 13 percent more likely to die of cancer than the average woman, there is more than enough evidence to support its unhealthiness.
The runners up were:
- Detroit, MI
- Cincinnati, OH
- Oklahoma City, OK
- Columbus, OH

I would be ok with living in Honolulu!
1Haha: Live in Cincinnati and from Columbus. It doesn't get any unhealthier than that! Luckily I'm an exception to the rule
2I think Philadelphia should be on that unhleathy list. I live there and wow! NOT healthy! And gross and dirty too. Can't wait to move!
3I'm from Columbus too and it's so sad that it's one of the unhealthiest cities in the country (I'd have to see the survey techniques to determine how credible the survey is, but sad nonetheless). This won't change my outlook on my life and my health though. It's a personal choice, so that shouldn't be affected by demographics of where you live. I do wish people general had the same outlook!
4I like how the healthiest cities are also basically impossible to afford living in. (Well, I don't know about Vermont to be fair.)
5hahah I'm from Ohio and just had to laugh seeing 2 of our cities on this list... I personally live a pretty healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise but I'm not surprised the warmer areas are higher up on the list... it can be hard to motivate yourself to get up and go outside when its 0 degrees outside in the winter
6I need to move back home to San Francisco. Since I've left I have gained about....20lbs...
(
7I am shocked that there are no Texas cities listed!
8I'm from Suffolk County- the number 2 ranked, i have no idea what they're talking about!! haha
9Yay Nassau County...I live in Long Beach, it's wonderful..we are a healthy community (in the summer haha)
10None of my state's cities (Massachusetts) are on either list...
Ohio isn't looking too good, huh??
11Another reason to move to San Francisco from western PA. If only I could afford to do so...
12Yay!! I live in Suffolk County
13So is everyone in San Francisco as psychotic as you are about food?
14double yay for nassua, vic vic, i live in bethpage!
15yay for SF! I always love reading Self's cities list.
16When I was living in Columbus they had a big push to make the city healthier. Guess it didn't work?
17i'm suprised DC didn't make a healthy list.. it was the #1 healthiest city on a men's health list lately (gym reading, i'll pretty much read ANYTHING on a treadmill, and who doesn't want a peek into the other halves world?)
18I live in South Carolina...I wonder where our cities would fall on the list. We have great weather, mountains, and lots of greenery!
19Go San Fran!
20Wow Im not shocked at all on Columbus and Cinci since I moved to OH I have never seen so many obese people in my life. Its obsurd and sad but this is very true. The problem is there is more takeout and restaurants than anywhere Ive been and the parking lots are full everyday of the week, odd but Im sure this is part of it. Really sad.
21Hey mtiger... I'm in SC too... Charleston area... what part are you in?
22Greenville...I come to Charleston all the time! My family has a dondo at Folly Beach!
23i would love to live in Honolulu or San Francisco...Have been to both...my two favorite cities...unfortunately, cannot afford to live there.
24Yayy suffolk! Li is my favorite place in the world. I live there but i'm wondering why it's considered so healthy? I got to school in Amherst, MA and I think they are more health conscious here than at home. They have more farmers markets, fresh produce, health food stores, healthy resturants etc etc. Maybe more people do exercise on long island though? I wonder where the study was from...
25I live an hour away from Gary, IN... where the Jacksons originate from.. nasty place!
26Burlington, VT? How do they compile this evidence, anyway? Would be interesting to know...
27yay for honolulu! everyone is always working out!
28YAY san frannnnnnn
