I am impressed by a simple marathon. To me, running 26.2 miles seems like enough of a feat, but plain old marathons pale in comparison to ultramarathons. These endurance races are not only extreme distances, but many take place in extreme locations as well.
I just leaned about the Marathon des Sables, and to be extreme about the race I thought I would ask you a few questions about it. Guessing the answers on this one is half the fun, since you have to think very far outside the box to understand the mind of an endurance racer.
After taking the quiz let me know if you have ever (or have the desire to) run an ultramarathon in the comments section below.

Um, wow. It makes me want to meet someone who's actually doing this, just to understand why.
1149 miles-oh my lord...
2I heard about this on Man Vs. Wild on Friday night (great show btw). Yeah, first off 149 miles through anything would be treacherous - but through the Sahara! WOW!
3Oh this is like the old school Super Mario World 2. It took place in the desert and you had to dig a lot. Snakes everywhere.. I get it...
4Wow - I knew it was a long race, but was surprised that it was over 100 miles!
5Wow, I can't imagine ever wanting to do this, but it is impressive...and crazy!
6sounds alot like badwater..which is 135 miles thru death valley, CA..its a 130 degrees..pretty crazy!
7I really really really wish I could do this. I mean, it'd take me 4 days but how cool! I'm too poor though, sadly.
8This is insane! I could never do this, I just don't have that endurance.
9Ohhh, okay, it's run over a term of six days. That makes much more sense. For a second there I thought people ran this all at once. Not that running through the desert for six days is totally sane or anything, but saner.
10Check out the DVD "Running on the Sun" for some great endurance information! They are running the Badwater marathon, and their slogan is something like "135 miles, 120 degrees, 60 hours." They are running across Death Valley - so hot their shoes melt! I thought it sounded awful, but the video is very interesting, and really gives you some good insight into why people push themselves so hard.
11I would be interested to do the run. If they have a club or something, I would volunteer to devote my life to train for this run, it would be such a unique experience IMO. Sorry, I am just an avid runner, love it too much.
12I like running as much as the next person, but I think you'd have to be insane to put your body through that. What if you ran out of water and couldn't get to your reflective mirror or flare?! You'd die!!!
13My husband just completed his first 100 mile race in October. I spent the whole time out there with him and paced him in the last 17 miles. Suffice it to say...the ultrarunner is a different breed of human!
