It seems reasonable to say that everyone wants to avoid catching the flu and for that reason many people get vaccinated for the flu. Even though the flu shot isn't guaranteed to protect you against all types of the flu, it is recommended for many populations, like moms and children under five. Some people are adamantly opposed to vaccinations, especially the flu vaccine. Me? This year I am trying it out and the entire family got the shot (my 4-year-old didn't appreciate the preventive measure very much).

So I was wondering...

I prefer to fight it the old fashion way...
1I always get a flu shot. It's free, so what's there to lose? I see no downside. Plus, my fiance is a doctor and I am a research scientist in the hospital, so we are constantly exposed to germs. All I know is that as a kid, I got the flu several times... but never since I started getting the flu shot!
2I was sort of guilt tripped into it this year. My first year ever getting one (that I can remember). I am 20. Annnnd I got a snoopy band aid. haha
My Mom said I had to, her nurse friends said I should, and my aunt the doctor said I should too(I have colitis). People with chronic illnesses that mess with their immune system should get them too. College kids should also get a shot...
3We get them for free at work, so I did. I don't know if I would have taken the initiative to go to the doctor and do it on my own, though.
4i'm in the same boat as laura220, i'm 20 and my mom made me get one for the first time in my life. i felt like kind of a wuss, but considering i live at college and seem to catch everything that is going around, getting a flu shot was probably a good idea.
5Oh God yes. I'm going to be doing my student teaching at the elementary level at the beginning of next year, and there's no way in hell I'm stepping foot inside an elementary school without a flu shot.
6My mom is on medicine that compromises her immune system and need to get one if we intend on visiting for the holidays.
And if they're not giving them out at work, there's no need to make an appt. with a doctor--they have them at most major chain stores that have pharmacies--I got mine for $25 at the local Kroger pharmacy. It's less if your insurance covers them.
7I'm suppose to get it every year because of my athsma but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Hopefully this weekend I can!
8I got mine a few weeks ago. I'm pregnant and married to a doctor who is constantly exposed to many things, so it was doubly imperative I get it. I mean, why not? It certainly can't hurt.
9i've never had one,...and i don't think i ever will
10i feel like if your going to get sick your going to get sick plain and simple
I've never had one. I guess its one thing if you have a really weak immune system. But me I prefer to fight things off naturally. Thats what your immune system is supposed to do.
11I cant get the flu shoe because I have an egg allergy (the solution it is in is egg based). BUT I hardly ever get the flu so...
12I've never gotten one. It's just my husband and I and neither of us work in high 'exposure' areas and we don't live have any kids or anyone else living with us with a compromised immune system. I'll just continue my avid hand washing ways.
13No. I used to every yr tillI read how it increases yor risk of developing Alzheimers later on it life.
No thanks!
14No. I don't get them.
15I never used to, and only had the flu once as a child and once as an adult. I had a really strong immune system and like Seraphim said I had preferred to fight it 'the old fashioned way'. Well, I've now got some health issues that leaves me vulnerable to illness at the drop of a hat. I work with the public and so who knows what's coming and going. I now get one every year, just to be safe as now the flu could do some real damage to me. BOO.
16I work at a library, so I'm thinking about getting one this year.
17Back in college, I used to get the flu shot from our health center every year because it was free. Now I hate my job so much that I actually HOPE I get the flu.
18they were giving them out for free at work, so i thought why not?
19My dad had one last year because he's over 60, but he must have gotten a bad strain because he was very sick for about two months last winter. None of the doctors knew what he had, but he recovered. So I have my reservations in getting one.
20and i am not gonna.
21I get it every year. I'm asthmatic and it's usually pretty mild. But when I get the flu, for months afterwards, I have to go on all these crazy meds just to do things like climb the stairs. I'd rather have the shot!
22I seriously never get sick (knock on wood) so I never bother. I haven't been sick in eight years, and that was only because I moved to a different climate.
23Aimeeb, do you have a citation for your claim that flu shots cause Alzheimer's? All I find when I google for more info is junk science & bogus medical claims.
24No - why add something else to my body that I don't need - I am generally healthy and I can fight flu the old fashion way. If I get a really bad string I know where to go.
25i agree with karisaamy. the last shot i got was the meningitis shot, because it was mandatory before going to college. i'd rather not put such things in my body, besides that's what my immune system is for.
26I had been told by my mom (though I don't know how reliable that is, obviously) that there's no point getting a flu shot every year because it's always last year's virus that you're getting inoculated against- and that it won't do you much good against the current strain.
I almost never get sick (save for allergies). When I do have the flu, it's bearable. I'm a healthy adult with good hand-washing practices, so I don't plan to get one. If I get the flu, I'll fight it off the old-fashioned way.
27i'm going to india for three week after christmas and have been told i NEED to get one.
it's probably about time i do that.
28I have not gotten the flu shot and will not be getting the flu shot/vaccine ever again. Turns out that I am still deathly allergic to it. What no one ever tells you is the flu shot/vaccine contains formaldehyde as a suspension agent for the vaccine. Well, I am deathly allergic to formaldehyde had loads of fun 3 years ago when I decided to be proactive and get the flu shot and ended up in the hospital, unable to breathe, joints swollen, heart swollen with fluid.
The flu was better and easier than the shot.
29No flu shot for me. I don't get the flu that bad anyways.
30Since I'm not allergic to the shot I get them every year...when I used to work I would get them for free and now that I'm no longer working I got it for free through my husband's medical coverage at a local CVS.
I've gotten the flu plenty of times when I was young and older and I don't want it again.
Also, I have small nieces and nephews and I if I didn't get the shot I could be a carrier and not even know it. I don't see anything wrong with it (unless you're allergic) and if everyone got it maybe more people wouldn't get the flu.
31They give them out at my work however I've never gottan a flu shot and I've never had the flu so I figure why mess with a good thing.
32I'm not in a high risk group, and I'm not around kids or the elderly very often, so I don't bother.
33I'm not very sure that the benefits outweigh the risks. More people die in car accidents every year than of diseases. I've only gotten one shot before and it wasn't even a flu shot, because my mom didn't believe in them.
34no, and not planning on it. it's extremely rare for the scientists to come up with the right vaccine, as the flu changes every year, it comes in cicles... so they never know which type is gonna come this year.
i had bad flu č years in a row on my birthday when i was 15 and 16. but this year since july i havent had a cold or anything yet. trying to eat healthier and it seems to be working really well.
35Please, get your young kids vaccinated. They are usually the ones catching the flu then bringing it home to their elder grandparents who can't fight it off as easily!
36I never do...
37I've never received a flu shot and don't plan to, but I'm a little taken aback by Jennifer Garner's quote on LilSugar. Are women who aren't mothers or the family caretakers less in need of a flu shot, then? My husband does the cooking and I do the cleaning in our house; does he need a flu shot more than me because a dirty house is at least livable but I'll starve if he comes down with the flu.
I'm probably reading too much into it, I know; I just don't like being set back 50 years because of a stupid celebrity quote.
