Ever heard of BMI? No not the music organization. BMI stands for Body Mass Index and it is a simple measurement of body fat based on height and weight.
Basically it’s a quick way to check in on your health and body in terms of weight. Just want to remind you that a healthy attitude about your body is just as important as physical fitness. I don't want to cause any unhealthy anxiety about having the perfect body. This is simply a tool.
I also want to let you know that there are limitations to the index. It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build since muscle weighs more than fat. Plus, it can underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass.
So check out Fit's Calculator to find out your BMI. That's not all! With the new SugarStats you can also find your Target Heart Rate, see if you're drinking enough water and find out how many calories you can eat to maintain your current weight.

I don't see how that BMI can be accurate at all. How can you possibly measure body fat based solely on height and weight?
1I'm scared to type in my info, scared all the Higher Sugars are huddled around making fun of it.
2I check mine every once in awhile just to make sure that I am in a good range. If Im close to the higher number I dont really freak out about it.
I heard somewhere that for every five feet of your height you should add 100 lbs then add 5 lbs for every inch after that. Then the range is plus or minus 5% of that total weight. So if you are 5'5 then you should weigh around 125 plus or minus 5%. Or something like that is that how they calculate the BMI?
It just doesnt take into account either different body shapes.

Jess that is called the Hamwi Method. It projects your idea body weight, but you actually take +/- 10% to account for bone size.
To get your bone size, use this method: wrap your middle finger and your thumb around your opposite wrist, if they overlap, you have small bones, if they touch you have a medium build and you dont need to ajust your ideal body weight, and if they dont touch at all then you have large bones. (small bones subtract 10%, large bones add 10%)
BMI is a tool to gauge your chace at getting diseases. 18-25 is ideal. Its actully quite accurate for the majority of the population. The only people it is innacurate on is the elderly and the super athletic, like marathon runner. Its not going to be high if you workout on a regular basis.
5Jennifer76, The BMI is just a guideline and while it has become controversial because many people, including physicians, have come to rely on it for making a medical diagnosis - but that has never been the BMIs purpose. It is meant to be used as a simple means of classifying sedentary (physically inactive) individuals with an average body composition.
Thanks for the comment!
6After accounting for my small bones, I'm 14 points overweight according to the Hamwi. Gotta work out more.
7maybe its the index finger. I dont remember. Thats just a rough estimate for your bone size, its not 100% accurate. I like to think my bones are large anyway. . .
8oops, "points"=pounds. (been grading papers all day... mind is sorta fuzzy)
It's ok, cams. I've been wanting to get into shape for a while, and now I have a good reason to. I'm pretty sure I'm small-boned; I've always had teeny wrists and fingers
)
9Arg; my smiley wasn't recognized and gave me a scary face instead.
10this just made me feel bad... it says I am underweight and should consider adding a few pounds. WELL DUH, who wouldnt want to gain more booty!??! I am a skinny white chick with a flat butt!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!
11Ooooh me too, Lauren! I cant gain weight.
12crispet, seriously??? GOOD, I am not the only one. I HATE that people are like, gosh you need to eat more! then they see me eat and they are like, GOD you eat like a bodybuilder! hahahhaa (i AM trying to build a body, so it makes sense
) hahahahhaa
13No, youre not the only one at all. I too hate those situations when people bash you for being skinny, as if its all fun and games. I hate it. Clothes generally look bad on you. MS and HS were terrible for me because I had no hips at all and I was a damn twig. Its better now, the hormones have kicked in or something. And then when youre eating out or shopping or talking about weight gain with other friends, they just glare at you.
14Me2! It says I'm underweight also. But I have had the same body type my whole life. I've always been a stick.
15People don't realize that it's also rude to ask how much you weigh when you're underweight
16People ask you that?
That's freaking rude!
17I agree. Ive gotten the, "You dont even weigh a buck soaking wet" a few too many times. Once when I was in swim class in college...in my bathing suit. Id never felt more embarrassed.
18Oh totally Jenna.
19...its like the grass is always greener right. overweight people dont get what its like to be too skinny and underweight people dont get what its like to be overweight. Such an unbelievable society that we live in that we can't all just be comfortable in our own skin as long as we're healthy.
I bet all you girls look just fine!
20I think weight is just a touchy subject for everyone. Regardless if your overweight or underweight.
21Totally true BlondeSugar!
Just remember that your health is the importance here. The BMI is just a guideline to see where you're at Body Mass wise. If you all are looking for a way to look fuller, building muscle is a good option -- You may want to try it out. Plus, weight training is good for your bones.
22Thanks, Fit. I do exercise and weight train. I just have always been very thin. I'm otherwise healthy, and trust me, I can EAT!
