In the past, I only used deodorants that were aluminum-free, because I heard, like many of you probably have, that the aluminum and other chemicals can seep into your skin and cause breast cancer - that clogging your pores prevents toxins from escaping, so they stay in your body.
This is not true.
The FDA has squashed this myth, quoting the National Cancer Institute (NCI), saying that "no existing scientific or medical evidence links the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants to the subsequent development of breast cancer."
The American Cancer Society (ACS) agrees. They say that sweat glands are not connected to the lymph nodes. Most cancer-causing substances are removed by your kidneys, and released through urine by the liver, and also when you poop. The lymph nodes don't release toxins through sweating.
Well there you have it. Antiperspirants do not cause breast cancer. Go ahead and buy any deodorant or antiperspirant your little heart desires.

i have heard that aluminum deodorant causes the yellow pit stains on your shirts, though. is that true?
and how come antiperspirants don't keep me from perspiring at all?
1YES! Cause I tell ya, I couldn't find a great anti-aluminum deoderant for the life of me!
2I heard it causes Alzheimer's, not Breast Cancer. I found one, I *think* it's Adidas, it's made with some kind of cotton or something...but it made my skin peel! (That sounds so gross, it was like it was dry or sunburned.)
3woah, I bet it's cause it dried out your armpit. That's happened to me before too. Some of those deoderants are really harsh on the skin!
4the alluminum in anti- persperants has been linked to alzhiemers, Addidas has a Al free version thats available, its not quite as effective but it gets the job done
5HA! I will now forward this article to my husband because we have had a bit of a disagreement on the topic! Thanks, Fit!
6I thought the aluminum caused Alzheimer's?
7Tom's of Maine offers a natural deodorant, but mind you its not an antipersperant, which is what I believe the aluminum is used for in regular sticks of deodorant/antipersperant.

8butrfly~ I've used the addidas Al free deoderant and haven't had such a problem, perhaps you should use a mouisurizer for your pitts as with other places that tend to be dry. It does make sense that this would be a pitt problem as there is alot of friction in that region and sweat salty...
9Patients with the Alzheimer's show an increased amount of aluminum in their brains. But it is not yet known if there is a link between using anti-perspirant that contains aluminum, and developing the disease.
There are a number of theories about what does cause Alzheimer's, one cause being genetics and another being over the age of 70 (good thing we don't have to worry about this yet).
10I use the Addidas one--it works well for me for 24 hours. I've had mixed results with the crystal rock thing.
The green pit stain thing is true, at least according to my entirely un-scientific observations after switching to non-aluminum brands.
11i use syneo5..it works for about 5 days..in these 5 days you won't sweat at all..it also doesn't leave any kind of marks/stains on your clothing.and the best of all is that it isn't harsh on the skin.. it's a bit expensive though.. 16 $ for 30ml
12Many people who use antiperspirants aren't so worried about cancer as what negative side effects could result from having aluminum in the blood stream. I have to say, in response to the above answer, just because the National Cancer Institute says that there are no studies linking antiperspirants with cancer does not mean that there is no such link. Perhaps scientists haven't done the right study yet. Or, as I suspect, there isn't much money in this sort of research and very few studies have been conducted. Nothing is debunked just because there aren't conclusive studies or the NCI says so. Given the corporate influence upon these governmental agencies, I'd be skeptical at all times.
13I would still recommend everyone stay away from these synthetic whodinannys. The FDA has profit, and not your health, at the top of its priority list. To believe that something has been proven, or debunked simply because the FDA does one of their "studies" is dangerous. Use natural salt sticks instead, wont stop the sweating but its natural.
14Hmm...
15Why does a lot of other places say that studies have shown a link? :/
I don't completely trust the FDA, I don't think they really care... Besides, just because there is absence of evidence, doesn't mean that that is evidence of absence.
