Being stressed out can have negative effects on your body and your self esteem. One way to alleviate stress is to meditate. If that sounds too woo woo for you, well read on and see just how simple it is.
First you want to sit or lie in a comfortable position. Then close your eyes and breathe deeply, smoothly and slowly. Focus all your attention on this simple action (that might be a lot harder than it sounds). When your mind wanders, which it inevitably will, bring your focus back to your breath.
If you need something to help you focus your mind, pick a short mantra to repeat in your head and try to coordinate it with your breath pattern. On the inhale say "I am feeling" and the exhale say "Calm" or "Patient" (that is a big one for me). Make your own mantra - I'd love to hear what works for you.
Fit's Tip: Start small - one minute in the morning and one minute in the afternoon. Or try for five minutes: Set your alarm for five minutes, close your eyes and just focus on "being."

This is kind of a hard habit to get into, but my dh noticed a big difference in my attitude and what-not when I was meditating. I was just thinking this morning about how I really needed to get back into doing this. (Now I just try to breathe deeply anytime sometimes ticks me off on my hour drive in.) My mind wanders way too much to focus on my own, but I found a podcast called Meditation Station on iTunes. My mom said she feels like the girl is going to "lean in and kiss" her, but I found it to be really helpful.
