With the invention and creativity of cosmetic surgery, if there's something about your body that you don't like, and if you have the money and the guts to go under the knife, you can get almost anything done. Body modification isn't just about breast implants and nose jobs anymore. You can get calf implants, butt implants, and guys are even getting pectoral implants. I guess I didn't realize that men are also feeling the pressures of society's standards to look good.
I just came across a new kind of surgery that blew me away. Six-pack surgery. More professionally known as abdominal etching, this procedure will turn your pudgy belly into a washboard. It's a kind of precision liposuction, where the doctor sucks fat from your belly, revealing the abdominal muscles that lie underneath. At first, when I saw the name of this procedure, I thought they carved out or put little implants in your belly to make it look like you have a 6-pack, but that's not the case. You actually have to have the muscular definition, either naturally or from working out.
How much does it cost to get six-pack abs? To find out read more
Abdominal etching costs between $4,000 and $6,000 and is only recommended for certain patients. If you have too much or too little fat on your belly, it won't turn out as well (an inch or two of pinchable belly fat is the key here).
This procedure has actually been around for decades, but it can take a really long time to get the desired look, so not many people go for it. The surgery takes only about an hour or two, but a patient can feel pain for days, and swelling can persist for weeks or even months. You may also experience complications such as bleeding, infection, or a build-up of fluid known as seroma (that can be drained with a needle).
No thanks. I think I'll stick to good old-fashioned cardio to burn fat and crunches to strengthen and tone my abs. Exercising not only makes me feel good, but when I work hard for my results, I also feel proud and confident.

Dries Van Noten
One of the things I don't like about this is that I never know if a fitness model whom I admire has had the surgery, or has just worked really hard for the results. I like to think that anything can be attainable if one works hard enough, but I would never get the surgery. Besides, the above picture just looks creepy!
1what the......
2How lazy can you get to have to get surgery to get a six pack? Yup everyone has a 6 pack no matter how overweight u actually are its just underneath all that fat. so technically doing sit ups doesn't really "give" us abs you just have to work hard at getting lean and it'll eventually show even without doing any ab excercise at all.... or you can shell out 4,000 bucks. blah
Dying to look good, for what, it will only come back if your a lazy slob anyway, it's not healthy, the only thing that makes you healthier is taking care of yourself.
3Okay, so I don't agree with cosmetic surgery at all, especially for six-pack abs! Besides, if somebody got this surgery, but wasn't physically fit overall (i.e. muscle definition in arms, etc.) wouldn't they look kind of weird. 'Hey! Check out my six-pack, but ignore my flabby arms!'
4it's terrible to say this, but i secretly love when men have body issues.
5The weird part about lipo, is if you regain the fat you lost, it will go everywhere BUT where it got sucked out. Imagine this guy looking all fat, but with a six pack still! hahaha
6Wow this is so weird...
7Gumdrops, That's exactly how the guy on the pic looks like. No V-shape and flabby breasts. Brrrrr
8I love that my boyfriend looks like the first picture opposed to the six pack in the second. I love his body and the added bonus that his incredible body heat keeps me warm at night! haha
9Hmmm.... that really makes me wonder about all those fitness models in the fitness magazines that I secretly envy. But, like others have already said... if you take care of yourself and exercise you look better *overall* not just in the abdominal area. Not to mention the healthy glow.
This pic (the after) just looks fake and yucky to me.
10okay the pictures in magazines are obviously photoshopped - six-packs are shaded in. that's a given though, everyone knows that.
its different to actually get SURGERY to make your body appear photoshopped, that just weird because the guy in the pic looks so fake!
11GROSS!
12that is disturbong. it's soo fake looking, like he has a turtle shell on backwatrds.
13He looks like a teenage mutant ninja turtle.
14He looks so gross! I agree with you musefromnowhere...my boyfriend is a little more in shape that the first picture, but I'm so glad he doesn't look like the second picture! I can't imagine paying $4,000 for that...if anyone wants to throw away $4,000, send it to me for my student loans!!
15MandyJoBo - sooo funny. You are so right.
16Ewwww, that just looks kinda creepy. I'll take a little man pudge any day over that.
17That is so disturbing.
18I find it oddly comforting to know that women aren't alone in having ridiculous body issues. Still I'd take a bit of man pudge over vanity any day.
19yuck!
20That doesn't look right. It is very creepy.
21ew! no no no no!
22I have to agree - I would much prefer my boyfriend with a bit of lovehandles (like he has now), than the fake, creepy 6-pack surgical abs.
23Eww!!
A six pack is something that is part of OVERALL body fitness. You can't just carve one out and expect it to look good!
24ew. that is REALLY WEIRD. but then when u think about it, so are all cosmetic surgeries *what a weird society*
25i actually heard on anderson cooper tonight (regarding kanye's mom's fatal cosmetic surgery) that cosmetic surgeries in the abdominal areas are more prone to problems or complications...and totally not worth it. seriously? you don't even need a 6-pack..just stay in shape and no matter what your abs look like it's better than this "surgically assisted" look
26I understand the need to boost one's self-esteem, but when you work out and then see results, that gives you ten times more boost than some surgery quick fix will do. And also, I've read that most patients gain 10-15 pounds throughout the year following plastic surgery. Why do people think that these quick fixes are what they need to be happy? It feels so much better when you earn your body!
27That looks nasty. It looks like he has on one of those superhero kids' Halloween costumes with the fake plastic muscles. Ew.
28That's so gross! His body looks all out of whack because his stomach muscles do not match his flabby arms and chest. If he had actually exercised and ate right, maybe he would have a better body overall, instead of just weird-looking abs and a flabby body.
29wow I have to agree with ley...you'd have to be incredibly lazy to spend thousands of dollars on surgery for six pack abs when you may have complications.
