Just like anything else foods can get a bad reputation. The thing about reputations is that they can be repaired, and scientist are working round the clock to make sure we're not skipping out on foods just because we've heard it through the grapevine that they're bad.
Avocados, peanuts, eggs, and coffee top the list of the top foods with the worst reputations that you should stop avoiding.
Here are highlights on why you should stop avoiding avocados:
- Avocado
Misconception: I shouldn't eat avocados because they're high in fat.
Why they're good for you: A lot of attention centers on the fact that avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, the heart-healthy kind. Yet scientists are now more interested in the active compounds in avocados that might help prevent cancer. One recent study found that those compounds can inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells in the laboratory. While conducting the study, these researchers found avocados are loaded with a variety of antioxidants, including familiar disease-fighting compounds such as lutein, beta-carotene, and vitamin E.The lycopene in tomatoes or the beta-carotene in carrots may be better absorbed if there's a slice or two of avocado in the bowl. Scientists suspect that the fat content of avocados helps the body absorb these antioxidants.

I love avacados! They are so good! I really love guacomole...mix salsa in with it and it's super healthy. It's good fat, anyway.
1Just had an avacado and turkey sandwich on wheat for lunch. YUM!
2Yay for the Avocado!! LOVE EM'
3Avocados are so effing good for you! My mother used to avoid them for their high fat content, and yes, there's fat, but it's good fat, and it's not going to MAKE you fat (unless you eat a ton every day).
Tiff58, that sounds like it would hit the spot. I might have to go get one for my lunch.
4love Avocados
5Avocados definitely fall into my top 5 favorite foods. I eat them with a spoon!!!
6LOVE avocado! And yeah, that turkey sandwich sounds really good right now!
7I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Avocados!!!! I actually have a dessert recipe for them, as soon as I can get food processor! =) That's how much I love them!!!
8Oh lord ladies dont get me started on how much I LOVE these little fruits!
I make avocado ice cream... soooo good! Its like 4 ingredients!
Today I had homemade curried chicken salad with mango chutney and avo in a low carb wrap... so tasty!
Love it.
9I love avocados because they give me the creaminess factor on my sandwiches and salads that I used to get from very unhealthy things....cheese, creamy dressings, etc. Now I can skip all those things and not feel deprived if I just add a little avocado to the mix.
10used to hate avacados, my mom kept telling me they were good for me but i didn't believe her, but now i love them. california avacados, yummy!
11I could just scoop out the buttery inside and eat it with nothing. I LOVE avocadoes. (But I usually have them with nachos!)
12Not a huge fan of it, but if it's good to absorb the nutrients in things such as carrots I might do it.
13I knew there was a reason I always ignored that rule! I love avocados and I don't care who says they aren't healthy they are!
14YUM YUM YUM.
15YAYYYY ♥♥♥ ITHEN SOOOO MUCH!! I EAT THE WHOOLE THING!
MMM sooo
goood! i can hav that 4 the rest of my life!
16hahaha ok im gonna stop.
love them! i buy vegetarian sushi from the grocery store, and it has carrots, avocado, & cucumber in each roll. good to know that the avocado will help absorb the carrot's nutrients. i think i'll get some more tomorrow
17mexican recipes always include tomatoes and avocados....what a great combo!!!
18I love frozen avocado with milk and a little sugar!
19I love avocado. I certainly don't avoid them. Some people are so afraid of fat they forget we do need good fat in our diet. I have one sitting on my counter at home - I think I'm gonna have it when I get home.
20The only time I really eat avocados is when we get tableside guacamole at Amigo's! They make it fresh in front of you. They bring out a couple avos, pre-measured add-ins like salt, lime, jalapeno sauce, cilantro, etc. It's pretty neat!
Of course, the corn chips aren't that good for you!
21Mmmm... avocados are some of my favorite things to have at brunch with eggs and salsa.
Or on a sandwich.
Or watching football (in guac form, of course).
My fave is to mash up some avos, mix in salsa (and maybe a few extra bits of jalepeno), and eat it with bell pepper, celery or carrot sticks. Yum!
22I eat avocados almost every day. i spread them on sandwiches instead of Mayo.
