Just like anything else foods can get a bad reputation. The thing about reputations is that they can be repaired, and scientists are working round the clock to make sure we're not skipping out on foods just because we've heard it through the grapevine that they're bad.
Avocados, peanuts, eggs, and coffee top the list of the top foods with the worst reputations that you should stop avoiding.
Here are highlights on why you should stop avoiding peanut butter:
- Peanut butter
Misconception: This creamy spread is an indulgence best enjoyed occasionally because it's high in fat and calories.
Why it's good for you: At least five major studies confirm that eating peanuts can lower risk for coronary heart disease. So it's no leap to think that peanut butter confers the same benefits. "Suffice it to say that eating peanut butter or peanuts has been associated with lower total cholesterol, lower ldl or 'bad' cholesterol, and lower triglycerides, all of which are associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk," says Richard Mattes, Ph.D., R.D., a professor of nutrition at Purdue University.Even better, these health benefits seem to occur without also promoting weight gain. One reason could be that peanut butter is a stick-to-the-ribs kind of food. When Mattes offered a group of volunteers seven different snack foods (including peanut butter, rice cakes, pickles, and almonds), study participants reported that peanut butter or peanuts were much more filling snacks than rice cakes or pickles and tamed hunger for much longer. Sure, peanut butter is high in fat and calories, but if a small amount can quell hunger, that might explain why dieters seem more satisfied with weight-loss plans that include the spread.

I can proudly say that I tried peanut butter for the first time because FitSugar pointed out the benefits of it. And I love it!
1I love peanut butter and have some for breakfast nearly every day! Thanks Fit for that post. I personnally knew it is high in cals but got never bothered about it cause it is healthy fat and we do need some fat!
2But my favourite is almond butter! I buy it less though cause here it is much more expensive than peanut butter...
3Sobsobsob. I'm allergic.
4Peanut butter is fabulous, and while I do worry while I spread it on toast that it's fattening, after I eat it (!) I do find myself not needing to reach for any more food because I'm satisfied.
5I put some ON a rice cake...mmm!
6I think that peanut butter might be a migraine trigger for me, there have been a lot of coincidences. Which is annoying, since soy is a trigger too and I'm veg. But almond butter seems to be okay...
7I love PB with celery.
8peanut butter on apple slices is divine.
9I
peanut butter!
10Mmmmm especially the chunky one!!!
I love peanut butter. I eat it regularly and it sure hasn't hurt me. syako I'm with you on the apples - its the best.
11Peanut butter are sooo goood! I had to stop eating PB for a few months because I kept getting sick to my stomach, but now that I've started eating them again, my stomach seems fine!
12i love peanut butter on toasted wheat bread! yum!
13definitely make the switch to organic peanut butter if you haven't already... it tastes SO good!
14peanut butter.. yum.. very very delicious.. but yea.. the only drawback for me from eating peanutbutter is the high cals...
15Sometimes there is nothing better than a good old fashioned PB&J!
16I'm really trying to fit in more produce into every meal and snack, and I love having peanut butter on celery at work. It's the one snack that really feels like a mini-meal, and keeps me from hitting the candy jar at 3pm.
I like to get almond butter, or natural peanut butter, but my husband always forgets to put it back in the refridgerator! Does anyone know how sensitive that stuff is? If it has been sitting out for an afternoon, is it time to toss it, or stick it back in the fridge?
17I'm with you alillee, I LOVE creamy PB on toasted wheat bread. Mmmmm...I may have to have that for breakfast tomorrow!
18I just can't do it. I love peanut butter, but every time I stop by it at the grocery store, I check the label and its still just as terrible as the last time I checked. I can't imagine putting that many cals and fat in me for such a tiny amount of food. Plus, I know if its in my cabinet, I'll eat the whole jar!
19you all need to check out skippy natural - no transfat and so delicious!
20Peanut butter is one of my favorite foods, I just have to be careful about the portion control. I like making a PB and banana smoothie, that way a little goes a long way.
21Peanut butter is so good...and it's healthy fat. You shouldn't go overboard, but there's no harm in having peanut butter toast...so good!
22Two mornings ago, I made my big-eater husband a slice of whole grain toast, topped with organic peanut butter. He called me later amazed that it kept him satisfied until lunch time!
23Juju - you DONT need to refrigerate natural peanut butter. It should be fine, either kept in your pantry OR in your fridge.
24I eat peanut butter EVERY SINGLE DAY. I go through withdrawals without it. I am skippy lifetime user. I like the creamy "Natural" version.
25Thanks DC star!
26DC Star I perfectly agree with your husband. I usually eat two slices of wholewheat bread with peanut butter and jam and it keep me full until lunch so I don't end snacking on junk.
27Argh...now I'm craving peanut butter! Thanks Fit for rationalizing it for me
28I'm a peanut butter fiend! I can't go one day without spreading it all over something. My husband HATES it though, he hates the smell, the look, everything about it. His hatred of it just breaks my heart, I'm that in love with peanut butter.
