Sick of chicken yet? You're not alone, but how does someone who's trying to watch her calories and fat intake pick a lean type of meat? I found a basic breakdown on the leanest meat choices on Yahoo and I thought it would be helpful in deciding which meat meets your needs. Here are the highlights:
![]()
- Bison: We hope you’re ready to expand your dinner horizons because bison (aka buffalo) is the big winner. (Deer and elk are right on its hooves, er, heels.) Believe it or not, bison has slightly less fat and fewer calories (2 grams and 122 calories per 3-ounce serving) than skinless light meat chicken (3g and 144 cals). Plus, it’s a terrific source of protein (24g) and iron. The taste? Similar to beef, though slightly sweeter and richer.
Bonus: With bison (wild game, too), you aren't exposed to the cancer-linked growth hormones and antibiotics administered to farm-raised cows.
- Beef and Veal: Beef and veal are skinniest when they’re loin or round cuts, such as beef bottom sirloin (6g fat, 150 cals) and top round veal (3g, 128 cals). Avoid veal cutlets and breast meat.
- Pork: Choose leg cuts, such as ham, or loin, as in boneless sirloin pork chops or top loin chops (both have about 7g fat and 170 cals).
- Lamb: Try cuts from the shank half of the leg (if labels aren’t clear, ask the butcher). Well-trimmed shank-half cuts have 5-6 grams fat and about 155 calories per serving.
Fit's Tip: Meat is generally higher in cholesterol and saturated fat than chicken, fish or vegetables, so use the choices above for those times when you just need some red meat.

GUESS
Bison meat is sooo yummy! I've had a Bison burger as well as Bison tips. You can hardly tell the difference comparing it to beef.
1I grew up in North Dakota and people eat bison ALL the time . . . breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I'm not a big fan (but I don't really like red meat, period), but it makes for great burgers (if you buy it ground) because it has such strong flavor on its own.
2Bison?? I don't think so.
I'm not much of a red meat eater...on occasion, it's good, but I generally don't eat meat much at all. Even chicken. Lately, I've been eating more seafood.
3We don't eat much meat, except fish. I have had bison, elk and even moose though, and I have to say I enjoyed it all. On our second date, my husband actually made me lasagna with ground elk. It was awesome, save for the black olives, but I faked it and got them down.
My father-in-law is a hunter and used to send us some of the meat he would get from elk and moose. I don't know about the quality of moose meat, but it was good, and wild game doesn't upset me ethically the way conventionally raised meat does.
I've also seen (but don't know that I've tried) Beefalo, a cross between buffalo and beef (if that wasn't obvious). My dad loved it.
4Bison is really, really good. I made bison chili last night.
5I had bison at Fuddruckers before I had surgery and it was delicious. Moist, tender and not at all gamey. I think if I have guest for Xmas I'll cook a Bison roast for dinner.
6Bison burgers from trader joe's are the best!
7I've had Buffalo recently! Very tasty.
=D
I also like Ostrich burgers.. =)
8I'll stick to chicken.
9Ted's Montana Grill is a restaurant that features Bison- I like it!
10Bison is SO good!
11Alberta definatly has some winner Bison!
I agree with lil 1 and fluffyhelen! Trader Joe's buffalo burgers are so good, and ostrich burgers are fantastic too! They taste just as good as hamburgers but are much healthier
12I love bison! Another good reason to eat bison - it is very filling. Everyone I know that eats it agrees that a small portion seems to be more filling than an equal amount of other types of meat. Go Bison!
13I dont like Veal, i eat alot of chicken and pork and occasionally red meat and venison.
I wont touch Lamb, its too. gummy
