When it comes to losing weight, it is easy to think that skipping meals means less food which means fewer calories in. It can seem counterintuitive but skipping meals could be one of the worst ways to lose weight.
Here's why: When you skip a meal (or two, or three), your body starts to wonder why it's not getting any food and it will go into starvation mode. Then it reacts by slowing down your metabolism. As we all know by now, a slower metabolism means slower weight loss so this is the last thing you want. Try not to leave more than three or four hours between meals and snacks—some people even like to have 5-6 smaller meals per day to make sure this never happens.
Fit's Tip: More importantly, try your hardest not to skip breakfast.

I don't buy into the whole starvation mode thing. I think your body needs a lot longer than skipping one meal before it kicks into high gear and starts slowing your metabolism down.
Severe caloric restriction diets work for some people, so how come they're not going into starvation mode? How about the people who do the high-calorie day/low-calorie day on-off thing?
One meal isn't going to kill you. Some days I'm just not as hungry as other... it's never had a negative effect for me.
1I've heard this before...
2I heard it before.
3I don't eat breakfast though, and I haven't since god knows when...before high school probably.
I just don't like it. I might have a glass of orange huice and some tea but that's more then enough for me.
I always eat lunch and dinner though with some snacks in between.
yeah, i don't know how i feel about this either. not that i advocate starving oneself, but about a year ago for a bunch of different reasons i just lost my appetite and ate very little each day for a couple of months. i lost a noticeable amount of weight, so i don't think my body was in any sort of starvation mode.
4thanks fit
5great tip!
thanks!
I usually don't eat breakfast but rather some version of coffee, I'm naturally just not hungry in the mornings. I started a pretty rigorous exercise routine a couple months ago, and I find that eating about 3 or 4 low cal snacks during the day then having soup or a healthy frozen mean for dinner is the best way to go. You can eat constantly just make sure that they are low in fat and calories.
6Uh yeah, I'm with Clairent on the "Darla" and "Suzzanna" spam. How interesting that they are both new members talking about some magic weight loss. I checked out the site and it's one of those 'be your own boss' things. Um, Suzzana, 18 in two months? With the aid of a 'supplement'. You are not on the right site to post this, sorry. Also, 25 to loose total would not mean that your life was in any danger at all unless you were unhappy with yourself in which case this little pill won't help those of us really trying here.
Anyhow, on to the topic at hand. I don't eat breakfast which I've mentioned numerous times before. I just can't fit it in before I go to work and after taking my thyroid pill. I do eat it on the weekends when I'm home and have the time to let my pill set for an hour first. Also, I think I read somewhere that skipping a meal ONCE IN A WHILE is not as bad as researchers once thought. I'll have to look that info up. Now, I'm not saying to skip all the time. I don't, but I do eat REALLY small meals. Enough so my tummy knows it will get fed, but not too much to go over my fat and calorie intake for weight loss. Down 50, 60 more to go!
7I have to remind my boyfriend of this one. He has days where he stops for Starbucks and then decides that since he had calorie-ladden coffee, he can't eat his morning snack or lunch. I totally believe in 3 small meals and 2 low calorie snacks to make it through the day. Granted, there are times when I'm just not hungry (especially if I'm sick) so I won't say I do this every day. I do try to though.
8he he...I see "darla" and "suzzanna" posts are now gone.
Thanks fit for getting rid
of the spammers! They were a drag.
9Good to be reminded about this. It baffles me why people continue to skip meals when it's so bad. I bet they would stop if they knew it slowed their metabolism. I have been eating closer to the 5 small meals a day model (well more like 3 small meals and snacks). I feel like I eat more than I did before, but my metabolism seems to have sped up considerably. I wouldn't have believed it until I tried it.
10I know it's not healthy and lots of people think just cuz someone does eat a meal or doesn't eat a lot at a meal that they're starving themselves...but sometimes you just don't have an appetite!!!
This is my case..sometimes if I go out and enjoy a nice coffee break with some girlfriends in the afternoon, I'm really not hungry for dinner. I'm not intentionally skipping meals, but I don't eat if I'm not hungry. And just cuz it's DINNER doesn't mean I have to eat at that time. I don't get people when they eat just cuz people say they have to..if you're not hungry, why stuff food into yourself? Wait until you ARE hungry, then the food tastes 100% yummier.
I do try to eat breakfast everyday if I'm awake (mainly work days lol)..then that fills me up til lunch..where I eat a salad or soup or sandwich, OR snack, etc...healthy small things all afternoon..especially fruit..I LOOOOVE a banana in the afternoon..perfect amount of sweetness for that afternoon sweet tooth...then my "main meal" is dinner. That's when I usually eat the "good stuff" lol esp all the home cooked meals XD yum!
11I hate when people say this because I'm not gonna force myself to eat if I'm not hungry...
I don't eat breakfast, haven't since I was forced to as a child. If I try to force myself to follow these diet tips I literally want to throw up...
12Some days I'm not hungrgy - but if I am hungry but don't eat, THAT's when the binging is more likely to happen
13I accualty did this before, skipping meal. I was in a very bad mood that day so I cried and didn't want to get out from my room to have lunch. Then I had dinner again and realise when I weight myself that night my weight has gone down by 1.5kg!
14I'm not trying to encourage people.
It works...somehow but you'll hurt your body. Don't ever try it.
