At the humane society near my home, they're always looking for volunteers. Since I have such a soft spot in my heart for animals, like my pal PetSugar, I was checking out ways to help out and saw the perfect job.
You and your significant other can volunteer as dog walkers. You usually have to have some kind of orientation first, but then after that you can show up and take the dogs that are waiting to be adopted for a walk whenever you want. It gives you both some exercise, and it also helps the dogs feel more at ease when socializing with humans.
Animal shelters appreciate your help, and the dogs appreciate getting out of their tiny stall and into the fresh air where they can run around. It'll have a huge impact on the dogs you walk, and you'll feel good getting outside and running around, too.
Fit's Tips: Some shelters are closed on Sundays so call ahead to find out when they're open.

I used to do this because it was my bat mitzvah volunteer project. It was always fun to go with my dad, especially because we are both dog lovers. I recommend doing this! I probably should do it again sometime soon.
1Yes!
2I volunteer for an RSPCA animal shelter and it is totally worthwhile. =D
I used to volunteer as a dog RUNNER for our local shelter. I would show up in my running gear and take 3 or 4 dogs for a mile run each. It was a great way to get my workout in and tire out the dogs at the same time. A lot of active dogs behave SO much better when they are tired out and they actually get adopted easier if they get a lot of regular walking, so it's a win-win situation for everyone.
3Great idea, spectra!
4I love this idea...I should really take it up and get my pet fix as a volunteer dog walker!
5I love this idea!! I have always wanted a dog so this could be a nice way for me to "Test" different races and see which type of dog suits me best. The only problem? I am afraid if I go to an animal shelter I will want to adopt them all!!!
6I did this for a few years and it was honestly one of the best things I have ever done. The dogs are kept in tiny cages for hours on end and have so much energy with nowhere to expend it. They are so happy to get out into the fresh air and I felt great being able to give them some relief. It also helps them get adopted because they stay socialized with people. I also got a great workout in the process. My work schedule got very hectic and I had to stop but I miss it dearly and hope to be able to volunteer again soon.
