Yogurt, Good for Your Tummy and Your BMI

I love yogurt. I am not lying when I say I eat it every single day. Mainly I eat yogurt because of the intestinal benefits and feel good ingredients, but now there is yet another reason to stock up on the stuff.

New research has found that women who ate three or more servings of yogurt over a two week period on average had a 15% lower body mass index (BMI) than women who didn't consume any yogurt.

Three servings of yogurt over 14 days? That's nothing. If this sounds good to you then try to incorporate yogurt into your diet.

So ironic this is posted today.

I've never been one for yogurt but yesterday picked up some Activia beecause I've read how great it is for you.

Although I'm still not a huge fan, it's not as bad as I remembered and I think this will bcome a new staple in my diet. Smiling

Hmm... I'd be skeptical of this research, which was funded and conducted by General Mills, the maker of Yoplait yogurt.

I really doubt that if you just start eating 3 cups of yogurt a day your BMI will drop 15 percent. It's more likely that women who diet eat more yogurt than women who don't.
    I like it anyway Smiling

Nikolem2, you hit the nail on the head. It's easy to manipulate research when a company is looking for a specific answer that is beneficial to them. I wouldn't believe any research that is sponsored by a biased source.

The live and active cultures (probiotics) in yogurt have great health benefits, but many commercial yogurts are loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners. Your safest bet is plain greek (or European style) yogurt, which is strained. It makes for a thicker, creamier yogurt with far less sugar and no additives. Plus, it's delicious!

I think it probably has more to do with the fact that most people who eat yogurt regularly are probably healthy eaters, and most people who eat healthy are also concerned about exercize. You could just as easily substitute yogurt for another low calorie snack and still weigh the same.

yeah, i think it completely depends on the yogurt, though. that yoplait has SO much sugar!! add some blueberries (one of the 12 healthiest foods according to a cookbook i recently saw) to some plain yogurt and i have no doubt it's got more than just one health benefit

I eat yogurt nearly every morning, too. Here's my favorite breakfast, all mixed up in one bowl:

-3/4 cup Pavel plain lowfat yogurt

    - One very ripe mashed banana

    -1/2 cup chopped strawberries

    - 2 tbsp flax seeds (whole or ground)

Hmm, a healthy digestive system OR a healthy glucose level...decisions, decisions. Flavored yogurts are just dairy + sugar. I think this probably has something to do with portion control. They are in little containers that tell you when to stop, so say, you're not downing a bag of chips instead. People who would eat yogurt are already trying to eat healthier. I get plain, organic yogurt and mix in my own fruit, some vanilla extract, and maybe some Splenda every once in a while. It makes me feel great!

The plain European yogurt is the best, unstrained To much sugar in the fruit added yogurt. I have celiac's. I have eaten plain Pavel yogurt everyday for the last 3 years. This is what I eat daily for lunch. 3/4 cup Pavel Plain Yogurt. 1 apple. 1/2 to 1 Tablespoon organic raisins, 1/8 cup walnuts. To die for. I never get tired of it. Great for You. Protein in yogurt, lots of Omega 3's in walnuts. Natural sugar in fruit and raisin so no honey, aspartame, table sugar or other poisons are needed to sweeten.
