Here is an easy little tip that I learned, and I've got to say, it does wonders: Keep seconds off the table.
Growing up my mom would always cook a big meal and then put the extras in the middle of the table so we could just help ourselves when we wanted seconds. The problem is when we wanted seconds all we had to do was reach over and reload our plates, so I'd always overeat. Living in small apartments with small tables meant that I never had the room for this practice, so I slowly broke myself of the habit. However, recently my family and I ate over at a friend's house and they placed the extras in the middle of the table and we all left feeling totally overstuffed. Why? Well the food was there right in front of us, thus, we ate more.
So fill your plates then remove the extras away from the table—you won't miss what you don't see. Want to go a step further? Fill your plate with an appropriate portion then pack the extras up and put them in the fridge before eating. This way you won't be tempted to go back for more, unless you truly are still hungry. If you still want more, at least you'll be burning a few more calories to get the second helping.
Fit's Tip: I do this with wine too. Instead of keeping the bottle on the table, I'll just pour my husband and myself a glass then re-cork the bottle. If the bottle just sat in front of us, we'd surely end up having a few too many unnecessary glasses and calories.

This is such a good idea. Another tip (this is what I do) is fix your plates, then turn off the stove or whatever...you don't want seconds if they're cold!
1Great idea! I follow it already, and I usually will never have seconds

3Sorry for the double post...don't know why that happened.
4This is a great tip. I pretty much do this - I serve how much I need and then I take the rest that's leftover and dump it on my hubby's plate. He'll eat it all and there won't be any left over for me to pick at. Also - another thing I find that works well is only cook what's necessary. If you and your significant other are not going to eat a whole box of pasta then don't cook it. Only cook what you'll eat.
5Yah, but you'd end up having hot drunk sex with your husband so you'd work it off!!!! =O)~
6Good idea!
7I do this. I put what I'm going to eat on a plate and put the rest in the fridge right away. That way, I have to reheat more if I want seconds. It's funny...my family used to do the same thing with the serving dishes on the table. I'd often go for seconds of spaghetti...huge platefuls of pasta with lots of sauce and cheese. Or chili. But yeah, that's how I got chubby and I got thin by NOT doing that!
8putting extras is great, but usually the food is still hot and puting it in a fridge is very bad for the food and the fridge itself... so that's the dilema - what to do while the food is still cooling down and one lives in a small appartment, or maybe even studio - where there's no way to escape the smells... oh sweet temptation.
