We all have a favorite excuse for not working out. If yours is "I am just too tired," I have something to tell you. Exercise will give you energy. For reals!
When you are tired, it is difficult to remember how great you felt at the end of your last workout. Chances are really high you felt better post exercise than you did before, and you probably felt more relaxed too. Exercise promotes oxygen exchange, out with the stale air and in with the fresh. Motivate yourself with the carrot of the post exercise euphoria!
Exercise can help you sleep better, and a night of restful sleep will help you stay more energized the next day.
When I am feeling weary and therefore wary of exercise, I have to work through the mind games I play to talk myself out of exercising. Once I finally get moving, I find my energy is there and I am for a full workout. So fight the "too tired" excuse with the mantra "exercise to energize." It may be a little cheesy, but sometimes all it takes is two words to get me off the couch.

I need to remember this!
1I firmly believe this! On days when I do my running, I feel like I come home and have more energy then days when I skip out or take it easy at the gym! So I always try and work my hardest so that I actally do feel more energized when I am home
2"Exercising gives you energy" is so true. I came home from work and was so tired. Then my hubby encouraged me to take a brisk walk on the bike trail. It was so refreshing and invigorating!
3haha i have used this one before.. never works!
4I always wonder about this, if you haven't gotten enough sleep and are really legitimately tired, is it better to get sleep or excercise?
5i always feel to tired when i get home from work, but then i start thinking about how good i feel when im done working out and thats what motivates me to do it.
6EastVillageAmy: It's funny that you asked that right now coz I just finished reading this month's Woman's Health mag and it said that you're better off taking a nap or sleeping in if you haven't gotten enough sleep the night before and feeling like you really need some shut eye/tired. They said that women who slept 7+ hours a night were less likely to put on weight than those who only get 6 or less hours a night. The less sleep you have plays with your appetite-regulating hormones they said.
7oh, yeah...definitly used that excuse. now i try to go to the gym, even if i'm tired and i give myself 10 minutes (of moderate cardio) to get into a workout rhythm. if i'm still feeling tired and sleepy after 10 minutes, then i quit because i'm clearly actually tired and my body wants sleep.
i've also heard that if you're too tired, then you won't workout as hard and you may have poor form, making you more prone to injury...something to think about. you can't exercise very well with an injury, now can you.
8I don't care what anyone says--after a 12 hour shift at the hospital on my feet, the only thing that is going to energize me is SLEEP.
9I have a long commute to work and by the time it's time to work out I always feel 'too tired' to go. I often have to give myself a lecture and tell myself that I NEED to go to the gym. And I will FEEL better when I'm done.
I do feel really good about myself after I'm done. And when I do work out I sleep A LOT better!
10Oh...i have the energy to go to the gym...i just dont have the time. I may have a hour or two...but thats only in the evening and working out before bed is a big no-no. I usually do my exercises around the home and even a few at work but i would totally love the time to get in a good run!! When they add a few more hours to the day i will have no trouble getting a good workout.
11Honestly I dont think there is much that would get me to the gym...lack of motivation reaaally kicks in. My excuse is that I eat right so I dont have to work out
12I've never gone to the gym and come out feeling worse than when I went in.. no matter how bad a mood I was in!
=)
This is what I try and remember when I am trying to find the motivation.
13i have a long commute as well and the only way i was able to stop using this excuse is: 1) run ON my way home and 2) get a running buddy.
Because even though i can tell myself "im too tired" i simply can't cancel on someoen just because i feel groggy. So knowing that someone is waiting for me to run with them helps a lot.
Also, running in the middle of my commute, not only saves me from coming home and crashing in front of the computer, but also breaks up my commute!
14i agree with fluffyhelen. no matter how i might be feeling beforehand, if i can push myself to exercise, i am usually in a pretty good, upbeat mood by the time i'm done. sometimes its so hard to actually get started though.
15I took this advice today and even though I was exhausted from classes all day, I went to the gym and actually ran 3 miles
16i feel like i am aaalways tired! hmm then i just drink tea and dont workout! no wonder i gained this much weight!
17that is so me. i took 2 months off from the gym because i was "too tired", and i just started going bak this week and feel soooo much better !
18I needed to read this today. I have been sooooooo tired lately, and I was just using this very excuse.
19this speaks to me! I am printing out this article to remind me! haha
20If I know I'm not sleep-deprived (and I WAS earlier this week when I'd been going on 5 hours a night and took a nap instead of working out) but I still feel tired, what I'll do is put on my running clothes and shoes and head out the door. I tell myself, "I'm going to walk for a warmup, and if I feel like running after that, I will, but if I'm still tired, I'll just keep walking and take the intensity down a notch for the day." Either way I still get exercise because a mile is a mile, but I allow myself to not go as hard. A lot of times, I do end up running.
21so true...i hate to say
22I feel this everyday cuz of my commute.
23I use the tired excuse A LOT... ahem!
