Sick of getting sick? Join the club. I will do anything and everything it takes to avoid getting sick this winter, and so I was thrilled to find this list of 10 practices that will help you stay away from hospitals, feel healthier, and live longer.
- See a Chiropractor
- Laugh hard
- Scatter your workouts
- Sleep at least seven hours a night
- See an acupuncturist
- Meditate
- Perform cardiovascular exercise at least four times a week
- Stretch
- Eat organic food
- Be wary of medications
I regularly do almost everything on the list aside from meditate and see an acupuncturist. What about you guys — how many things on the list do you do?

I don't see how seeing a chiropractor can keep you from getting sick.
1And eating organic all the time is a little extreme for someone to keep from getting sick.
I'd say more along the lines of eating 5 fruits/veggies daily and limiting fat intake, making sure you get the RDA of vitamins, etc.
I don't see a chiropractor and I don't see a point either. (as AMP said) As far as acupuncture, I'm sure it can help but it sure to get $$$ quikcly.
The rest all seem doable and I try to abide by them.
As far as 100% organic, I don't have the time or bank account to be living 100% organic.
2I'm sick right now. I HATE it! My immune system is usually pretty strong and I am such a germophobe, but this is the second time I've been sick this year.
3I only do two things on the list on a regular basis.
4I read that a chiropractor can actually hurt you more than help.
5I try to do most of the things on that list (like laughing hard, eating organic food, 7 hours of sleep). My workouts are usually VERY scattered though lately they've been on the regular. And I don't take medications, ever.
The last time I was truly ill, was March of 2001. I'm not kidding. It was my junior year of highschool, and I had 2 very important history papers due right around that time. I remember lying in bed, so delirious I was almost hallucinating. It was just a very, very bad fl, and I think it was the stress from schoolwork that did it. I'd had almost the same level of sickness earlier that year and I'd had 2 history papers due at that time as well. So I think the MOST important thing on that list is #2. Laugh hard, don't stress!
6See a Chiropractor - I DUNNO ABOUT THIS ONE...

BAD ME
7Laugh hard - ALWAYS DO
Scatter your workouts - I NEVER HAVE PLANNED DAYS
Sleep at least seven hours a night - I USUSALLY DO!
See an acupuncturist - I'LL GET AROUND TO IT
Meditate - NEVER TRIED!
Perform cardiovascular exercise at least four times a week - YES I DO!!!
Stretch -
Eat organic food - HERE AND THERE
Be wary of medications - I HAVE NO CHOICE WITH MY ATHSMA
This list is ridiculous.
Be wary of medications? See an acupuncturist? A chiropractor?
8Wait, if you already do almost everything on the list and you're sick of getting sick, how does the list help...?
As for me, if I get 7 hours of sleep every night, I will never get sick. But, I just can't seem to make myself do that.
9Love this list! I should do more - I only do like 5 of those things ( #'s : 2,3,4,9,10.)
10What about wash your hands and get plenty of vitamin C?
11The source for this list starts out with "There is certainly no shortage of information about things we can do to maintain an illness-free and healthy lifestyle. Perhaps our biggest challenge is deciphering which nuggets of information are beneficial and which aren’t so great!"
Indeed!
What's laughable is that this list is written by "Todd," an "entrepreneur and business consultant" from Manhattan! Exactly who I would go to for medical advice.
Todd also advocates that holistic healers are better than doctors and that people should attend a "Landmark Forum," which is a well known "large group training" session that brainwashes people and is considered a cult.
12Seeing a chiropractor can definitely keep your immune system in top working order. I think eating organic (and avoiding preservatives) is great keeping in mind that 'You are what you eat'. Our cells can only work at peak condition if we feed it peak ingredients. I am impressed by this list and wondering what the source is.
13i have asthma, so no choice but to get my inmune sistem UP
so i eat a lot of Vitamin C, lots of orange juice
and i work out so to keep a good lung resistance
I run on the tread mill at least 1/2 and hour a day
To me its a nightmare getting a cold or worst the FLU
14I always thought chiropractors were kind of a "gimic" Are they really good for you?
15Ummm!!! FitSugar! You forgot a REALLY important one!
DO YOGA!
If I do yoga three times a week, I don't EVER get sick. I kid you not! I have no idea when the last time I had a cold was. It's been YEARS!
16Wow, see a chiropractor??
17Hottpink -- some people swear by them, but in medicine they are viewed as very dangerous. I cannot tell you the number of people my fiance (orthopedic surgeon) has had to fix because of extreme damage done by a chiropractor. If you have back/neck/spine pain, see an orthopedist and fix it through physical therapy, NOT through a chiropractor. With certain "spine alignments" you run the risk of paralyzation -- does that sound like a good way to "never get sick again"??
What a bogus recommendation. I'm disappointed in FitSugar for promoting this entire list as the best way to stay out of hospitals.
I think there are a lot of misconceptions about what chiropractic is. You are far more likely to get nerve damage taking a medication (chemotherapy for cancer, high blood pressure medications, certain cholesterol meds, and on and on) than by being adjusted by a chiropractor. The risk of harm by adjusting is infinitesimally small according to actual research. Chiropractic is one of the safest, least invasive ways to treat pain according to a growing body of medical research. MDs who are anti-chiropractic are in the minority these days as the newer generations learn more about chiropractic in their medical school coursework. I think this list is an excellent example of how to prevent illness.
181. Never done!
2. Check
3. Check
4. mostly check
5. See an acupuncturist... double check and I highly recommend for those who haven't!
6. Double check
7. check
8. check
9. check
10. check
Guess I'm on my way to being healthy.. now if I can just get rid of this POISON IVY!!!
19I don't do a lot of that stuff, and the three or four I do aren't on a regular basis. *shrug* Shame on me.
Facin8me, that's freaky.
20I haven't been sick since around 2002...I got food poisoning and was miserable. But I haven't had a cold or the flu or anything in forever. I attribute my health to: eating lots of fruits and veggies (and no, not organic ones...I just wash mine well), not taking antibiotics, getting lots of exercise (I run about 70 miles a week plus I lift weights), getting at least 6 hours of sleep a night, and trying to stay as unstressed as possible.
21if i work out i never get sick.
but the biggest problem for me is the people, that come to public places who are really sick. i'm in university now and it's only october, and we still weat t-shirts and light jackets but people are already getting really sick, cauthing and sneezing round the clock... i just want to stand up and tell them off. it's so incosiderate and the most common way of getting everyone else sick.
22I currently do: #2,4,6, 8, 9, and 10.
I am going to try acupuncture--it is on my "to do soon" list...
I would definitely like to work out more...I am very thin, not looking to lose weight, but I'd love to tone up and just feel more in shape.
I think I'm all set with a chiropractor...
23Chiropractic care is a fantastic way to maintain a healthy body, as is a holistic approach to your health care. A chiropractor who knows what he's doing will not "break" your spine or send you to the ER. Modern medicine and hostipal care is imporant and valuable in some situations, but is not the only answer...especially when there are several other options that are less invasive and gentler on the body. A good chiropractor is not entirely focused on making your pain go away; they are about total body health. Is it just a coincidence that every nerve in our body stems from our spine?
24Your health comes from the inside out. Treat your body well and it will help you stay immune to outside forces.
I have to say that I was at the gym 6 days a week from September 06 - July 07. I also ate extremely healthy each day. I didn't get sick at all! I recently stopped (long story.. I need to get back into my routine) and I got sick.
I firmly believe this helps stave off the cooties!
25First, lets address the safety of chiropractic. If you were to compare malpractice insurance rates of chiropractors and other conventional medical docs, you would see chiropractors pay about $1,000 a year, a medical doc pays around $50,000. Why? It's because chiropractors get sued far less often and for far less money...because they cause less harm, and in comparison to medical doc is much safer then taking perscription medication and surgury. Remember, these are insurance companies who base their rates on statistics, and not online pop sugar comments that random people leave behind.
Second, what you dont know is that the benefits of chiropractic have long been pushed aside by our current health paradigm. Pharmacuticals is the wealthiest industry in the world, therefore big budgets allow them to advertise freely, and push legislation through congress to protect their interest (more money). By the way, this only happens in America because we are the only country blind enough to believe everything TV and ignorant oppinonated Docs have to say. Case in point, America holds 3% of the worlds population, but we consume 70% of the drugs manufactured in the world.
Third, chiropractic adjustments stimulate the most vital system of our body, the nervous system, which controls every organ, every cell of the body. Including, as Eroc pointed out earlier, the immune system. Chiropractic corrects a condition of the spine known as a subluxation, which is a mechanical interfernce of the spine, to the the spinal cord and spinal nerves. These nerves transmit information from the brain to the body, which control everything, including health and healing.
However, chiropractors are not asprin, or pain doctors either. Chiropractic is about preventitive medicine, which is the antithesis of our current health care system. A better name for our countries system would be the Sick Care system because we cater only to the sick, and the Wellness industry remains a small but rapidly growing sector of the sick care system. A change is long overdue in America...According to the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) and The New England Journal of Medicine, the two most prestigous medical journals of the world, America maintains the worst health of any industrialized country in the world (but consume the most drugs) and that our health care system causes more harm than good. Be an informed consumer, do the research, know the truth. And for all the medical students who are walking naively into a profession of death, and not health, i suggest you above all read your own future professions published literature. JAMA 1998.
26yeah i just heard to never let a chiropractor touch you from the shoulders up. as for the rest i try to do, like avoiding medications and eating organic or at least not eating processed foods. however i think regular workouts is better.

28i never did anything from that list except Laugh hard , i rarely get sick, so i must of doing something right.
29Chiropractors are BS! If you're having back problems, see an orthopedist. Chiropractors offer a quick fix for some problems but may cause more damage down the line.
30To those of you who do not believe in the power of a chiropractor you need to see for yourself.
31The reason chiropractors are great for your health is that every part of your body is dictated by your central nervous system. Practically every problem can be solved by realigning your spine and taking the pressure off of the nerves.
I didn't believe it for myself until I was in a car accident.
While I was recovering and going through treatment, every part of my body feel into synch. My stomach problems subsided. My headaches virtually disappeared. My focus was stronger. My body just felt better.
Don't dismiss them because your parents or grandparents tell you.
They go to school typically 2 years longer than your family doctor. And, they are all about all natural, no drugs, no pesticides and total body health.
I dont get sick. and the only thing i do on that list regularly is laugh alot.
