John Mayer takes a little time away from his adorable girlfriend to get in a good workout. I am extremely pleased to see him using the outdoors and a set of public stairs to get the most out of his cardio workout, especially since we all know the boy can afford a gym membership or even a StepMill for his home gym.
So, take it from John and use a set of stairs to up your next workout outside. Here is an easy way to start:
- Warm up by slowly walking up and down the stairs for five minutes
- Sprint from the bottom of the stairs to the top as fast as possible
- Jog down to the bottom
- Repeat for 15-20 minutes
- Cool down by slowly walking up and down the stairs for five more minutes
More than a great workout, stair running is a great way to burn major calories: A 130 pound person can burn around 400 calories by running stairs for just 30 minutes. I like to jog to a park near my house where there are stairs, do my stair exercise (above), then jog home for a full cardio workout. You'll be quite tired, especially if you've never done stairs before. So try it out and be sure to keep some water at the bottom of the stairs, because you're going to need it.

We have stairs in our office. I think I will try..
1I live in an old building...built in 1817. Each floor of stairs is equal to 2 flighs of stairs because all of the floors have 14 foot ceilings! If they weren't the original wood stairs and didn't make so much noise I would run on them!!
2I'd be terrified of running up and down stairs. I already have a fear of falling down or up and cracking my teeth. I have to hold onto the rail each time I use the stairs. Though it seems like a good exercise, I can't imagine running on them. :-\ Wouldn't it hurt the knee joints too?
3Running stairs is freaking hard! I've been able to work my way up on the Stepmill to about 45 minutes, but I get winded just walking briskly up five flights of stairs in my apt. building. I would love to try this but live in flat Chicago...and like Soniabonya, I'm afraid of falling (I'm VERY clumsy." Still, I'd love to try that massive outdoors staircase in California...

5This sounds like fun! I'm reluctant to try it though because my knees sometimes bother me when I run. I think jogging down stairs might cause some pain.
6and john mayer is a hottie.
I'll work out with him anytime, yum, yum!
7I used to do this in the very end staircase in my dorm in college when it was too cold out to run. There were 6 flights of stairs and I'd run up and down them something like 20 times. It really was a good workout!
8a friend of mine was running stairs while abroad in denmark because they have no hills and he wanted to substitute while he was training for a hilly marathon back home. he must have pounded his knees because he had to have surgery and basically blew them out. I am a little scared of stairs because of that, and that i am also so afraid of falling too! It's not my nose that i am afraid to break, for some reason it's my pinky finger.... It's just so tiny and out there.
Regardless of all my fears, i'll keep a lookout for a good set of stairs to do this on around my area.
9how i love stairs!!!
10I'm going to have to try this tomorrow.
