Running your first marathon can be a very scary thing. So instead of signing up for the New York City Marathon as your very first marathon, try starting with something a little less intimidating.

Not sure which marathons are good for first timers? Here's a list from US Airways Magazine that sums it right up:
- DISNEY WORLD MARATHON
Novices will love the fact that the course is level, and you’ll never be at a loss for scenery as you wind past sights like Cinderella Castle. This race always fills up fast, so reserve early. Check it out at DisneyWorldMarathon.com - LASALLE BANK CHICAGO MARATHON
The nation’s 2nd-largest marathon features a very flat course and is well organized. Bring lots of water and pace yourself since the weather can be quite hot during this marathon. Check it out at ChicagoMarathon.com. - MARINE CORPS MARATHON
Also known as "The People's Marathon," this perennial favorite win are recommended. Check it out at MarineMarathon.com. - MEDTRONICS TWIN CITIES MARATHON
The citizens along this flat course extend the type of friendly atmosphere people have come to associate with midwestern America. Check it out at TwinCitiesMarathon.org. - NEW LAS VEGAS MARATHON
This race begins at Mandalay Bay at the southern end of the Strip and proceeds through the heart of Vegas — it’s perhaps the only time Las Vegas Boulevard is closed. You’ll see hundreds of runners dressed as Elvis. (A push is on to break the world record with 101 Elvises!) There’s even a “Run Thru Wedding Chapel” featuring a “Running Reverend” for those who’d like to tie the knot or renew their vows. Check it out at LVMarathon.com.

Yeah just make sure it is not record-warm temps in Chicago that weekend. Someone died at this weekend's marathon from the heat and 250 more people had to seek medical treatment. I think someone also died at the Marine Corps marathon (but I could be wrong). People need to train adequately, and know their limits.
1They actually stopped the Chicago marathon mid-race yesterday because of the heat and the related health issues. They couldn't get water fast enough for the runners.
2I would recommend the NYC marathon. Yes it was hard, but what marathon isn't. The crowds are awesome, different bands play, you truely feel like a rock star running this race.
I feel for the runners that ran in the Chicago marathon...read that there was a problem with getting water to runners.
3I was going to say the same thing about the Chicago marathon. My sister's father in law was going to run it, but the registration was full. He's doing the Detroit one instead...good thing! I think it would really suck to have the race shut down halfway through. Did anyone "win" then, or did they just declare the person who was leading the winner?
I'd kind of like to do the Twin Cities marathon. It looks like it'd be a lot of fun. My husband laughs at me because I use the words "marathon" and "fun" in the same sentence, lol.
4The two elite athletes who won last year won again this year. Both the men's and women's finishes were great to watch. The men's race was too close to call so video tape decided it. The women's finish had the young lady from Ethiopia running full sprint to finish and beat the Romanian runner. The Romanian runner seemed to think she won and didn't look behind to see where last year's winner was. You can find video of both online. The professionals were finished way before the race was terminated. The women finished in 2 hours and 33 minutes if I remember correctly. Was too busy cheering on the female runner who after running 26 miles still had it in her to sprint the last 200 yards.
5I ran this marathon on Sunday and it was hot. My goal time was 4 hours and I finished in 4:30 due to the heat. I feel really sorry for the people that put all the hardwork in and weren't allowed to finish.
6I watched a friend cross the finish line at the Las Vegas marathon and I have to say, if you're gonna run one, that's the one to do! People were SOOOO into the craziness, they were cheered on at the finish line by clowns from Circus Circus and everyone was lining up to have their post-race pictures taken with the decked out showgirls. It was hilarious!
7I'm running the Disney one in 2008 (94 days!). I'm pretty excited since it's my first but like others, my heart goes out to those who put so much training into Chicago only to be told the race was cancelled.
