I got to start getting those sooner than I thought - I am close to 40 and had no idea.

I am 29 but have a strong history of bc in my family (my mom, my grandmother, and two aunts all on my mom's side.). My mother had her pre-cancerous cells at 34, and so both she and my primary care doctor urged me to go in for an early mammogram. Well, my OB-GYN was the one that would have to make the referral to the insurance company, and she didn't think the insurance company would cover it so early, so she didn't even call and TRY to fight for me and get me in.

My mom decided to help me out and paid for one out of pocket...she just wanted to make sure that I got a baseline. Well, they detected something. I ended up having to have a ultrasound, an MRI, and then ultimately a breast biopsy. Luckily, it was just a fibroadenoma, but it was VERY SCARY.

But, what I learned from that is that I am leaving my OB/GYN and will find one that will fight for me if necessary. If your doctor won't stand up and fight for you with the insurance companies, find someone who will!!

40 might be too late. i;m thinking of taking one in the near future, but it just looks so scary and painful. it was just yesterday on weeds. i don't have any cancer history, no history of anything really, everyone in my family dies from old age in their sleep... but i'm very causiouos and a freak when it comes to my health and abnomarlities... i'm 20 by the way

And even teenagers sometimes can have breast cancer right? so it's never too early to check up.

that reminds me to make my mom go get one, she just turned 40.
