When you don't get enough sleep, not only do you feel cranky, foggy, and can have a major headache, but a new British study says that people who don't get enough sleep on a regular basis are twice as likely to die of heart disease.
A 17-year analysis of 10,000 government workers showed that those who cut their 7 hour nightly snooze to 5 hours or less, had doubled their risk of death caused by heart problems. The reasons behind this observation aren't clear, but researchers found that people who didn't get enough zzzzs also had high blood pressure, a risk factor associated with strokes and heart attacks.
Since many people feel pressured to work longer hours, they're cutting back on their sleep to fit it all in. People may be getting ahead in their job and making more money, but it won't really matter if their heart problems prevent them from enjoying their success.
So here's the deal. Make sure to get at least 7 hours of undisturbed sleep a night. Do it for your sanity and for your heart.

1Yet another reason why sleep is so important...
2I actually read about a study a few months ago when I was reading up on insomnia (I have chronic problems with it). It said that animals that are deprived of sleep will die before animals deprived of food. Scary stuff.
Want to trade places DeJaVuE? I wish I got too much sleep! lol!
I am guilty of staying up late to finish work and sacrificing my sleep. But you bring a great point, FitSugar. There is no point of working so hard and not living long enough to enjoy it!
3I'm going to sleep right now, good night everyone!
4I'm in university so getting a regular pattern of sleep each day is HARD!!! Sometimes i slip and have to pull an all nighter to keep up with my studies but i guess its all apart of the experience.
5OH! maybe I need to sign off and get myself in bed!
6i stay up late all the time as i work better that way and then if i have a late class or one i can miss (hee hee) i sleep in until 9 or 10 am. i like doing stuff at night as it is so much more quiet.
7oh, and i function poorly on less than 8 or 8.5 hours of sleep
8I am a night owl, and unfortunatly i am not a morning person so there lies my problem! i have to take pills to fall asleep. it sucks.
97 hours just doesn't seem like enough. i work from 8-5 and then have class from 6-8 during the week and i normally get 7, but feel like 9 is my perfect amount - at least that's how much i made sure to get every night when all i did was work.
10I read your whole article and I loved your article. Yoga and Meditation may be an effective in the treatment of insomnia. And I have some good yoga tips at http://www.jiyohealthy.com/category/stress/ which will help u.
