If the first thing you reach for when you're stressed is a cigarette, I am here to say don't smoke. Now if you smoke but have been toying with the idea of quitting, first I'll say "HOORAY!!!" Then I'll say "Don't wait." Now is the time to plan your "quit day." Why not make it tomorrow since November 16th is The Great American Smokeout sponsored by they American Cancer Society?
They have a kick ass web site full of tips for quitting and amazing resources, like the Quitline - a hot line for telephone support through the stressful times. The number is 1-800-ACS-2345.
So hopefully knowing that folks from California to the New York islands are trying to kick the habit too, will give you some moral support. It is easier to know that you are not alone.

I like my lungs black, thankyouverymuch.
1I'm 24 and I smoked for 10 years. I was the kind of person who said "I love smoking, I'm never going to quit." But then I got pregnant and couldn't bring myself TO smoke. I quit and then my man quit, too. After we quit, my young stepdaughter's cough got better - which made us feel really guilty when we realized we were why it was there in the first place. We smoked only in the bathroom (because of the fan) and thought that was enough. When I was quitting, I went to the ACA website and learned that the smoke leaves toxic dust on anything it touches and opening a window or going in another room really doesn't help at all. Going outside is a little better, but you are still covered with it, and bring it in the house.
I'm one of those total hypocrites that HATES cigarettes now. The smell makes me physically ill and I do what I can to avoid people who do smoke. This is only because when I did smoke, I was too stubborn to realize how many other people I was hurting. When I studied it more, I felt horrible for subjecting my kids to it. Now their bio mom refuses to not smoke around them and my girl is pre-asthmatic and gets lung infections anytime she's around smoke. I look at her and how selfish she is to poison her daughter just so she can get her fix and she just makes me sick.
I hope we continue the "Snuffing the Smoke" trend. Here in MN, we are raising the cigarette taxes and banning it from restaurants. Even when I smoked, I thought (ban) was a good idea. A lot of people call it "Smoker's Rights" but you do not have the right to poison me or my kids because we chose to be at the same place. It's not like drinking which only affects you. We went to an outdoor concert and someone next to us was smoking and even though we moved, my daughter still developed an infection from that short exposure.
And... you stink. Really, you do.
2Butrfly4404, CONGRATS on quitting, that's a huge accomplishment.
3Thanks! Almost two years now - my asthma is pretty much gone and my kids are a lot happier and healthier. And I can actually do physical activity now! Yay!
4That's sweet that you quit Butrfly*
5My dad and step dad both died, one from lung cancer and the other throat cancer and melanoma., neither one of them wanted to give up cigarettes despite the dr's begging them to., they smoked up to about a week before they died. It's sad, I miss em.
Right on Butrfly4404!
