A very controversial commercial for PETA starring Alicia Silverstone has hit the airways recently and I am curious what you guys think....
The new ads were set to hit Houston airwaves more than twenty times Wednesday, and PETA claims they chose Houston for the debut because it so often ranks high on lists of cities with the worst eating habits.
Does this video make you want to swear off meat? Check out this print ad.

Just another example of sex sells. She looks great, but I know plenty of people who look great who eat meat. I would rather the ads for PETA focus on WHY you should be a veggie.
1yea i agree w/ kiddylnd, but atleast its attracting attention to vegetarianism.
2I'm really against PETA... and I don't understand what lying around nude has to do with not eating meat... I dislike any group that uses the kind of smut PETA does to promote itself
3cool. if everyone else is doing it, why shouldn't PETA?
4makes no sense. I workout, eat healthy and eat meat and look great too. Should I parade around naked in ads to promote meat eating? It just doesn't go together.
5I agree. I'm very open to vegetarianism...I generally eat veg dinners half the week and meat the remaining days. But these ads aren't very convincing. Apparently a naked celebrity will convince die hard meat eaters and fur wearers (I'm sure that's not a word) to go veg. Why not introduce some of the health benefits instead? Maybe even suggest a diet of moderation...eat plant based dinners a few times instead of eating meat every single day...but that's peta for you. Shock and all or nothing.
6Yeah, not sure what being naked has to do with being a vegetarian. I mean, I get the "bare" and "natural" point, but that doesn't provide any real validity for me. I love Alicia and the fact that she's a vegetarian, but this ad doesn't do it for me.
7Nah. After watching that ad, I feel like eating a hamburger.
8That was just, I don't know, weird? I whole heartedly agree with the first poster, that the add shouldn't concentrate on this one celebrity who's gone veg, but rather WHY we should all make the switch. It's such a huge lifestyle change that I want facts and real concrete reasons as to why it should be done. And that is just all about sex selling. So while I think she's beautiful and the imagry was beautiful, it just didn't make any sense to me, the consumer, because they are essentially selling vegitarianism.
9lol okay...I shouldn't eat meat because I saw alicia silverstone's asscrack.
10try again peta.
I make sure I know where my meat is coming from at least (ok I cna't in resurants but I don't eat out that much anymore). Certain brands of meat (i.e. Lilydale) are all free-range chicken, and when you go to out-of-town Farmer Markets you get REAL meat. The cows and chickens eat what they are suppose to eat and are slaughtered more humanly then the regular slaughterhouse. I feel fine eating meat that comes from that.
11And the reason I look so much into is I love my red meat and could never give it up. I love animals too, and I hate to see them suffer and so it's kind of a take some give some situation.
Oh - another reason to dislike PETA - they HATE pitbulls. Now I understand that many people don't like them/ don't understand the breed/ don't like them etc. HOWEVER, PETA who is the champion of all animals dislikes them to the point that they believe they should all be destroyed. Sounds to me as if they are a little selective on which animals should be loved and get humane treatment. BOO PETA!

I love PETA, they do a great job! I'm sure this add has a great message...is different and people are talking about it...being vegetarian is a great thing to do...but first read a lot and know what to eat...don't just go vegetarian from one day to another...If someone is looking for more info on why go vegetarian, there are a lot of websites you can go to, books, etc, etc. It's just a matter of wanting to make a difference....you can go to www.meetyourmeat.com...
13I think that, sadly, it might just work this way. The visual of a slim naked body will probably work better to convince people to go vegetarian than any sort of verbal reasoning. I agree that it's nonsense, but I think it might work.
14are we sure that this isn't just some parody from the beef growers association. this is like a bad joke. "i feel so great. it's SOoooo amazing". It's gotta be a joke, right?
15Kiddylnd... thats very true, and another reason why I hate PETA they are very hypocritical... not to mention that they do things like destroy private property and use smut and nudity to move their cause...
16She's trying to show how healthy and great she looks by being nude. Plus...sex sells people. admit it.
17I think that ad is a bit more boring than it was made out to be.... she doesn't even really say much.
18Actually, I get what I mean by "boring" is "is that it?" it doesn't make me not want to eat meat... it's Alicia naked... so? I don't get it...? lol
I don't know why Peta campaigns for going vegetarian... if someone wants to do it they will, no amount of commercials or ads of naked celebrities will change that. It's the same thing as saying violent movies create serial killers... people, if a movie sets them off then anything would and they would have killed someone whether or not they saw the movie! It's the same idea here... no commerical will make anyone sway one way or the other.
Novaraen - sex sells? What are they trying to sell?
I probably care more about animals than most of the people posting here... but I've heard things about Peta that make me... frown? I'll put it that way

19herjoiedevivre - LOL. Your comment sums it up.
20I really like the commercial but it's not changing my thought about eating meat but it was nice to watch and hear what she had to say!
21A big ho-hum. Folks have already said this but I wish PETA would treat viewers like intelligent people rather than lemming who will do anything if you show them a naked celebrity. I was a vegetarian for 20 years and actually lost weight when I started eating meat again. I don't know why but that was the way it worked for me.
And, I'm sick of Hollywood telling us how beautiful they are. If it was my job to look good I'd spend 3 hours at the gym everyday and look like they do.
22WOW, SHE IS NAKED!! AND SHE LOOKS AMAZING! AND IS A VEGETARIAN!! MAYBE I SHOULD BE ONE TOO!!!
HarajukuLamb, you beat me to it. I have heard zero positive things about PETA, and they disgust me.
23well, she looks fantastic.
24I'm a vegetarian, but I do not agree with a lot of PETA's tactics. They try to FORCE people to convert to vegetarianism. Not cool. I look at being a vegetarian as a religion. I'm Catholic and would never try to force someone to believe what I was raised as, so why should PETA try to use tasteless ads like this to force their beliefs on others. Just not cool.
BTW, I'm on PETA's newletter mailing list. A few months ago they attacked filmaker, Michael Moore with a letter about his last documentary. Instead of criticizing his work, though, they attacked his weight and eating habits. What does his weight and eating habits have to do with his filmwork? Absolutely nothing. They just want more reasons to complain.
25you can't knock peta for employing the methods (sex) that any other business does. however, i think the spot could have been done a little differently. the music is a little creepy- should have been more "fresh" and less "smooth music".
26you don't have to be vegetarian to look like her. And you can be a vegetarian and be 300lbs too. So while i appreciate the cinematography I don't think the concept is there.
27I don't really get it?
I have been a vegetarian since I was 9 and lapsed for awhile in high school/college. When I return to it, I felt 100% better. Did I feel like I was emerging naked from a pool onto a lush green lawn? Not exactly...
Two things, in response to your comment, misstsapinay:
(1) PETA is an animal rights organization, so yeah, they do try to persuade (aggressively) people to go veg. The meat/poultry industry engages in some pretty horrific practices, and thanks to food lobbies get away with, for lack of a better word, murder (it is also devastating to the environment). So for PETA, convincing people to stop eating meat relates back to their overall mission for improving animal rights.
(2) Michael Moore's last movie was about healthcare in the U.S. and abroad, so I guess their point was that his poor health is related more to his diet and what he chooses to eat rather than the healthcare he receives (maybe? I havent read the letter. My PETA newsletter tends to be filed into my Junk/Bulk mailbox...)
I should say to completely discredit myself that though I am a vegetarian, I eat fish (sushi, mainly) and wear leather. I'm not trying to defend PETA either - I don't agree with much of what they do - just trying to clarify some things!
28the tv ad is just weird. she looks good, but what does having no boobs have to do with being a vegetarian. chips and certain candy are also vegetarian and they make you fat...they should concentrate on WHY you should be a vegetarian or vegan...then again, I absolutely HATE peta and I'd just rather they shut up.
29I agree that being a vegetarian doesn't not necessarily equate wtih being healthy. I had a roommate once that was a vegetarian, and he fried his veggies every night. He'd eat cheese on a bun and french fries from McDonald's. I know there are ways to be a vegetarian and be very healthy, but you can take those same principles and apply it to a meat-eating diet as well.
30While I applaud PETA for doing what they know will get the most attention (sex sells - or in this care it'll grasp your attention, or atleast some male viewers attention), I have to second guess their judgement in using Alicia Silverstone. Can anyone think of the last hit movie she was even in? I think people in the
31I think you guys are missing the point....Her being naked implies living a "veggie lifestyle". Being vegetarian doesn't just mean not eating meat...it also means not wearing fur or leather, using cruelty free products, etc. I think her being naked links back to PETA's "I'd Rather Go Naked Thank Wear Fur" campaign.
I admit that the spot is a bit lame in the sense that it really doesn't divulge much information about why you should go vegetarian (health reasons, the corrupt nature the meat and dairy industries, not to mention the USDA, etc.), but I would hardly classify it as "smut" and I applaud that they are targeting some of the least healthy (AKA "fattest) cities in America.
32I'm also a (new) vegetarian, simply because I don't want to put money into the hands of the people who run these nasty-ass slaughterhouses. However, I NEVER try to convince other people to "join me," and also, I never swim naked.
33I like what she had to say, but I really don't like that PETA is all for the objectification of women. Nudity can be beautiful, but it's totally unrelated to what they are talking about. Which makes it objectifying.
Not cool, IMO.
34I thought vegitarian was a dietary choice and vegan was a life style that was opposed to useing any animal products... as far as what the ad shows its supporting vegitarianism, not a vegan lifestyle... so why does she have to be naked??? unless PETA thinks that us meat eaters are so dumb that a naked celeb will make us stop eating meat...
We all know that sex sells, but seriously I doubt seeing a naked woman will cause anyone to change their eating habits...
35Are you allowed to show your bum on TV now?
36I'm a vegetarian and I don't look that good! I wonder what I'm doing wrong?!
37team... clearly you are not swimming around in the buff enough... clearly thats the secret...
38My problem with PETA is its consistent use of naked women to push vegetarianism. I've been a vegetarian for 12 years, but I don't see how eating animals is wrong but objectifying women is okay. With that said, I'm convinced that my vegetarian diet is a much healthier choice for me. I just wish PETA were not so predictable in its choice to feature naked ladies over and over.
39i am a vegetarian, and this ad is f*cking retarded. why is she talking like chandler bing? the whole thing is short, arbitrary and so scripted that it seems fake.
40NOTHING about PETA is cool, the puppy murdering, lying hypocrites. PETA kills!
41Wow. Maybe I should become a vegetarian! Hehe.
42PP RAW: Chandler Bing! Ha! It's true, but really, could she FEEL any more amazing??
43She looks great but the fact that she is laying there naked doesn't really convince me to stop eating meat. Like anything it is an individual choice that only you can make. As for PETA as an organization I do not agree with a lot of their tactics. I would be more likely to hear them out if they weren't so militant.
44She looks great because she hired a trainer and got off her ass. She was considerably heavier not that long ago and she was a vegetarian then as well.
45I'm a little confused. Like, I get the "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaign, but this was just...naked for the sake of naked. Don't get me wrong, she looks great and I'm sure it makes people pay attention, but it was a little random.
46I am not going to like anything PETA does. A group that gives money to an organization that has caused millions of dollars in vandalism (ELF) is ridiculous.
47The commercial doesn't really get the message across. If I didn't know it was a PETA ad, I'd be confused.
48already veg - and i love alicia silverstone so much
49Huh, I didn't see it. Did it actually air?
But good luck convincing Houstonites to give up meat. Do they realize that down here steak goes with everything?
