Looks like having a potty mouth won't hurt you too much. Serena Williams is one of 11 outstanding ladies Glamour magazine has chosen for its Women of the Year issue.
Glamour cites Williams's competitive spirit and drive as a testament to her success, even in the face of hardships like the tragic murder of her sister Yetunde and her rise through the rankings after suffering injuries in 2006. This year it all came full circle for Williams when she captured the Wimbledon victory against her sister, Venus — whom she credits as being a major force in motivating her to work the hardest and become the best.
Besides her Wimbledon victory, Williams has 11 Grand Slam titles, two Olympic gold medals, and has earned more prize money than any female athlete in history. But her trophies and bank account aren't the only reason Glamour thinks Williams is tops. Between winning matches, she's managed to start her own clothing line, pen an autobiography, and open a school in Kenya through her Serena Williams Foundation.
Who else did Glamour name as Women of the Year? Some of the other notables Williams holds court with are Michelle Obama, Maria Shriver, Rihanna, and poet Maya Angelou.

Really?? Even after her U.S. Open outburst?
1Wow, I guess this is just more proof that being respectful and having good sportmanship are no longer important in our society.
2Yeah...I like Glamour, but I would've left Serena off the list this year. Her behavior at the US Open was ridiculous. Plus, she's already overexposed - practically every article ever written about her is about how she's a great role model, etc etc. To me, great role models don't yell "I'll shove this f-ing ball down your f-ing throat" at someone in a public forum...coincidentally just before their latest book comes out.
3I have no respect for Glamour anymore.
4Gosh, to the people that voted for her. I only have one thing to say "thats too bad that you only look at the medals,pay,endorsements-- What about disrespect and unsportmanship behavior she displayed???!!!!
5um, she did a really good job about apoligizing and making it clear that what she did was wrong.
6i'm not a huge fan, but i like her and think that she's a fine pick.
I'm surprised she beat out Michelle Obama and Rihanna...it seems like Rihanna has gone through a lot more personal crap this year and has emerged from it so well that I would've thought she would be a better choice.
7Spectra, she didn't beat them out - they were all named Women of the Year. Like, collectively.
8I am disappointed that they chose Serena. I like her sister Venus so much more. Serena seems to have such a bad attitude and bad sportmanship. When Venus beat Serena for the Wimbledon in 2008, Venus (and her parents) spent the whole time having to talk about how great Serena is and apologizing to Serena because Serena was throwing a fit that she lost to her sister. That is sad that the one sister is constantly overshadowed to the point that when she wins, she can't enjoy her moment, she has to placate her sister.
I wish they would have chosen somebody else.
9I am shocked that Serena is on this list. Role model? I don't think so. This is a woman who several years ago criticized other players for their swearing on the court, citing that she didn't even know any swear words. What a hypocrite. I will never buy Glamour again.
10Obviously Glamour is hoping that we will buy this issue just to see why they would pick someone so controversial. Old parlor trick. Don't fall for it. Boycott this issue.
11Serena has been cheated before at the US OPEN! You would have been upset too. She is WOMAN of the year for standing up to those officals that don't want her to succeed! YEAH Serena! You go WOMAN!
12How holier-than-thou can you people get? Get over yourselves. She screwed up, she apologized, time to move on. Glamour has.
13Maybe they went to print before the incident?
14OMG...so what if Glamour went to print AFTER the US Open outburst? You people act like Serena was the only person to ever lose it. The girl has had so many calls against her; you can only take so much. At least she had the decency to apologize afterwards. That's much more than Hewitt, McEnroe, Agassi, Capriatti, etc... did after their outbursts. Anyway, congratulations Ms. Williams. I have my copy of Glamour!!!
15Congratulations Serena!!! I got to get my copy!!!
16Serena definitely deserves this!!! The young lady has been through sooooooooo much. She has been cheated numerous times and going off on an official is not the norm for her. So many others have done so without ANY repercussions or adverse remarks. Because this is a strong, black woman that shows confidence, she's attacked. She did more than McEnroe, Agassi and others who verbally attacked umps. Go Serena!!! For every non-supporter out there, you have 10 who support you.
17Thank you Glamour!!! Some of these posters need to dwell on all of the good that Serena has done; and not dwell on the one bad that she did--which she apologized for. What about the contributions she has made to entertainment, business, sports, fashion and education--opening up schools for the under-priviledge in Kenya--giving grants to US college students. Some of you could only hope you could be a tenth as good as Serena. Again, thank you Glamour!!! Serena is a well-deserving recipient.
18So wait--Glamour glorifies a body shape the vast majority of women can't attain through any safe means and you're all fine with that, but put Serena Williams on the cover and it's "BOYCOTT BOYCOTT BOYCOTT"?
Let's be honest here, people. You're not outraged because of her attitude--some of the supermodels you people idolize are guilty of much worse conduct, so you can just give up on that argument right now.
You are crying and whining because a woman who doesn't fit your narrow, shallow definition of "pretty" is on the cover of Glamour. Period. End of story.
