Oysters inspire no middle ground, you either love them or hate them. I fall in the former category and am always happy when oyster season comes around. Months that contain the letter "R" are the months of oyster season (that is September through April), so the season is upon us!
People gulp them raw hoping they are truly the aphrodisiac of legends, but some folks shy away from oysters because they think the mollusk is high in cholesterol. Well, truth be told they are a lean source of protein and they contain Omega-3 fatty acids. In fact 6 oysters contain one third of your RDI of the uber healthy fatty acid. Seems like a reason to split a dozen with your honey to me.
On the other hand, 6 oysters only contain about 55 milligrams of cholesterol, about 1/5 of the cholesterol found in an egg. So the effect on blood cholesterol caused by oysters is minimal at most. Plus they are high in the immune supporting mineral zinc, as well as B12, copper, iron and selenium,
Fit's Tip: You want to look for oysters that have tightly closed shells. They should smell like the sea and not at all sulfurous. Pregnant women, children and people with compromised immune systems should avoid eating raw oysters due to the potential of toxic bacteria that can lead to food poisoning.
And you, how do you feel about oysters? Do you like them raw? Do you prefer them on the BBQ. Tell me about it in the comment section below.

I love them raw with a little lemon, and tobasco sauce.
1I love them in gumbo's, stews, and fried with tobasco sauce. I never could bring myself to try one raw.
2Raw with some lemon, sea salt, Worcestershire Sauce and Tabasco. Mmm! My mouth is watering!
3LOVE them raw. With the perfect mixture of horseradish, Worcestershire, Tobasco & lemon. YUM!!
4Love raw oysters, but I'll only eat them in restaurants where I trust the freshness and quality. Let's not forget a touch of horseradish!
5Oops - lizzie_ttu got around to mentioning horseradish before I managed to finish my comment in between laundry loads!
6i'm one of those who stand the middle ground. i can eat them and enjoy, but if it's my grandma's chicken or oysters in super restarurant - i'll chose chicken.
i eat seafood to be healthy.
7Never tried them; The only fish I like is Tuna - from a can. I tried shrimp once and hated it; I was 9 when I tried shrimp, so my taste has probably changed however it grossed me out enough that I don't want to eat it again. I would try other types a fish however only to a certain point; I could never eat lobster since I always feel so bad for them.
8oyster shooters!
or with lemon & tabasco!
9love them with lemon
10Both ways, cooked and uncooked, they're like two different foods! My mum likes to steam cook them with OX sauce or ginger and shallots.
11Love them! Lightly steamed or raw with a little lemon and a mix of a little cocktail/horseradish/tabassco on the side. I get to eat them for my b-day dinner date this weekend!
12Raw with a little lemon and cocktail sauce!
13Mmmm i LOVE oysters! They are sooo good just shooting them back!!!!

15Love them any way. Plus I am really good at schuking them.
16I like oysters best steamed, with butter.
Hooters' roasted Carolina-style oysters are good, too.
The only way I like them raw is as a shooter with vodka and cocktail sauce.
17i love them raw with lemon, horseradish and Tabasco
18they're good Rockefeller too
We just had a death in Atlanta from raw oyster eating. Do not eat raw oysters in the summer - you are asking for trouble. Here is the link to the AJC article:

Cooking does not destroy the bacteria that kill. The old wives saying "only eat oysters in months that have an R" is good advice. May, June, July and August are not oyster months.
19I don't care what they're fried in, covered in, dipped in, what vitamins they have or how they benefit me...I think they are absolutely, positively DISGUSTING!!! (yes, I have tried them so don't think "how can you say eewwww if you haven't tried it") BLECH!!!
20Love them Raw with Lemon and HOT sauce
21love them raw with horseradish!
22I love love love! oysters! The Hog Island Company has the best sauce. They call it HogWash. Also the months with an R is not necessarily true, it depends on where they come from. According the SF Chronicle, "There is no off season for Pacific oysters because they are hybridized."

However, having said that, my number one rule when buying oysters is to make sure I get them from a reputable source. Oh yum!
23They are great cooked, I'm not a big fan of the raw versions. I do love the health benefits though.
24actually you can eat oysters all year round. Oysters spawn in the warmer months may - august and when eaten then tend to be more watery and bland and they are reduced in size, Oysters from the Gulf of Mexico spawn all year.
What can kill you is a bacterium called vibrio vulnificus. Which thrive in warm waters.Heat destroys it completly. The Norovirus is also attached to the oyster and call also be killed with Heat. There isnt a bacterium that can resist the cooking method according to the FDA.gov website.
I always eat mine steamed or fried.
25I like them just fine raw with lemon, horsey, tobasco, cocktail and crackers. (not all at once)
My fave is cajun steamed though...
