There are so many reasons to quit smoking and now here's a new one to add to the mountain of evidence urging you to kick the habit in the butt (sorry, but I had to give in to that pun).

A recent study concluded that smokers are putting themselves at risk for dementia. Participants who were smokers during the study were 50 percent more likely to develop dementia than people who had never smoked or were former smokers (that means giving up tobacco right now can significantly reduce your chances of developing dementia).
Dementia is linked to cerebrovascular disease and guess what? Smoking contributes to the risk of developing cerebrovascular disease. Another way smoking can contribute to dementia is by oxidative stress, which by damaging blood vessel cells can lead to hardening of the arteries. Smokers have higher rates of greater oxidative stress when compared to nonsmokers, and increased oxidative stress has been linked to developing Alzheimer's.
Looking to quit (I hope you are)? Then here are some tips on quitting and staying smoke free!

This is so true. Hubby's father has been in a nursing home for years now (since mid-50's) because his smoking caused him to have TIA's and mini-strokes ... he now has dementia so bad that he cannot dress himself, has no bowel functions, is slow to speak and comprehend anything. It's so sad. I quit smoking in Feb and hubby's finally taking Chantix because he's so afraid of ending up like his father ... and doctors already told him and his brothers that the susceptibility to dementia from smoking is HIGH. Thanks for letting others know of this danger, Fit!!
1Wow. That should be enough to discourage anyone from smoking.
2YUCK!
3oh man!
4My grandfather has smoked for like 50 years. We are totally starting to see the side effects from smoking including VERY SEVERE DEMETIA. It is not pleasant to go through. THANKS, so much for bringing this study to light. I am fowarding it right after I write this comment.
5Do we really need another reason NOT to smoke? Good info though.
6smoking is so BAD --in men it is the major cause of erectile dyfunction--tell that to young men!!!
