It could be the orange color just makes me happy, but yams are one of my favorite foods. They're one of Autumn's tasty delights.

This tuber is packed with potassium and magnesium — two important minerals you lose through sweating. Aside from replenishing electrolytes, yams are easy to digest making them a perfect pre-workout snack. High in complex carbs, yams fuel you up as well as prep you for a sweaty workout or a long run. Poke a small yam with a fork a couple of times, microwave it until soft, slice it open, and voila you have a snack. They're great post-workout too. Do you love yams? Have a recipe that features them? What I buy at my grocery store is labeled a yam — a jewel yam, garnet yam, or a tropical yam. It is in fact, biologically speaking a moist fleshed sweet potato. I was raised in the States and unfortunately, and incorrectly, here we refer to them as yams. I will watch my yam and my sweet potatoes from now on.

Hmm, due to their low GL, wouldn't this have to be eaten well before a workout? I thought simple carbs were the preferred pre-workout snack, so the sugar is readily available in one's blood?
1A little confused at Whole Foods - they have jewel yams, garnet yams, sweet potatoes, et al.
Wondering if you can help compare / contrast?
2I usually eat one about an hour before a run. It is my fave snack for an after work workout that come before dinner.
3I workout in the mornings (circuit training to JM dvds) and have a short window (less than an hour) in which to eat a snack. Any recommendations are appreciated!

12Yum, I love yams! I actually prefer them over sweet potatoes I find they have a richer flavor. I like them baked with some earth balance or spray butter! So good!

Yams are not sweet potatoes!!!
My fave way to eat sweet potatoes: bake, cut open and top with butter and brown sugar. No, it's not healthy, but it sure is good.
Other way to eat a baked sweet potato:
Top with cottage cheese
Top with greek yogurt
Top with a little maple syrup
Just eat on its own.
AZDaisy, I do eat the skin, but not everyone does.
14My grandmother used to make a dessert with sweet potatoes. She baked sweet potatoes with a little bit of butter and brownsugar and topped the whole casserole with marshmallows and it was heavenly! Love sweet potatoes!
15Thanks to Kimpossible for confirming. I was rather surprised when I saw the picture. I am African and ate yam a lot whilst growing up and do not recall it being that colour, that said I thought perhaps it must be Yam from a different region. Now I understand that there is a misunderstanding. Yam is very different from sweet potato and does not even taste anything like it. Please fit correct. Thanks.
