I went for a run in the woods with my dog yesterday, and I brought the neighbor's dog too, since Bonnie loves the company. This furry friend is almost 100 pounds, and a little clumsy, so when I started doing my sprint intervals, he got excited and sprinted right into me, knocking me clean on my behind. I laid on the ground in shock and held back the tears, while I felt the left side of my bum and elbow throbbing from the impact. He didn't even come back to see if I was OK, but Bonnie did (good dog). I finally got up and limped home, hurting physically, but also feeling a little hardcore. I couldn't wait to share my story and show my battle wounds.
Tell me, have you ever had a nasty fall while running on a treadmill or outside? If so, share your story in the RunningSugar group — a place for runners to gab about gear, personal records, and the battle wounds of running.
Maine New England
I don't run (especially on the treadmill) because I'm scared of falling. haha. I trip all the time while walking (I almost never actually fall, though) and I'm afraid if I move faster that I will fall badly when I trip.
1So did you just leave the neighbors dog running away??? GEESH. I am sorry you fell, but seriously.
2Oh no, the dogs were off-leash so we just walked the rest of the trail together, and then I leashed them for the walk home.
3I've fallen on the treadmill at home, and stumbled a little on the treadmill at the gym, when I mis-stepped on the side of the machine instead of on the moving belt. It is scary, and the reason I'd much rather run out side. ALthough, I admit I have fallen outside too. Hmm, maybe I'm just clumsy.
4I've fallen both outside and on the treadmill! But I fall all the time, so....however I once fell because I got on a tmill that someone had left 0N and I flew off. I always check them now before I get on!!
5Just a few months ago I tripped and went sprawling. I smashed up both knees, badly scraped one shoulder and even my ear got bloodied when my head hit. I had to go to the medical center and get x-rays. Fortunately no major damage, but I still have some nerve issues with one knee and probably a permanent scar on my shoulder. I am more nervous now and am probably running more slowly than I used to.
6I ran during my lunch break about a year ago around my company. I ran on the pedestrian sidewalk and did not realize the concrete was uneven. I tripped over and fell on my knee, scrape off some of my skin, but bad enough that I cannot run back to the company. Luckily, it is only 1 mile away, so I walk back to the company. I pay more attention to the road condition now when I run.
7I've never fallen running, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets tears in her eyes from the pain when she takes a bad spill.
I got thrown from my horse while swinging up onto his back and that hurt so bad. He threw me onto a concrete floor and I had to have somebody help me get back on him so that I could ride him into submission (did not want him thinking that was appropriate behavior). By the time I got off, I couldn't bend to get into my car - so embarrassed.
8I fell on a treadmill and tried to pull myself up. Big mistake- I ended up skinning up my knee, and someone had to come over and turn it off for me. I was mortified and didn't return to that gym for months.
9When I did high school track I fell numerous times. I did hurdles so that led to a few face plants. I also used to do the 100 meter sprint, but one time they asked me to try the 400... Well, I held my breath the whole time (like I used to do with the much shorter sprint) but with the 400 I passed out about half way through and woke up on the ground. I was never injured but I was super embarrassed!
10It's really funny that you brought this topic up now. In all my years of running, I had never fallen until last Sunday during the Nike Women's Marathon. Toward the end of the first mile, a girl just plowed right into me from behind, and I went flying and fell flat on my knee and hand. I had a lot of adrenaline going since the race had just begun, but I looked down several miles later and realized my knee was bleeding. It was also really embarrassing - of course the one I fall, it has to be in front of a thousand other people! Oh, and the girl looked over her shoulder to make sure I got up, but she never even said she was sorry!
11New Years Eve day I was doing an easy 6 miler in the city. I tripped over... my own feet, hit the groud hard, and CHIPPED MY FRONT TOOTH.. not by a lot, but I had braces for 6 years and I really love my teeth!
Found an emerg. dentist to bond it and now it looks fine.. you can tell if you look closely but it's not that bad.
It scared the eff out of me, though.
12Man - Chloe Bella - that's rough. Nothing like adrenaline to get you through the race though. Congrats on finishing the marathon.
Runningesq - that would scare me too.
13I don't run very often, but surprisingly enough, I've never fallen.. A few stumbles on the treadmill though. I' say 'surprisingly' because I'm the clumsiest person most people know. I've actually sprained my ankle standing waiting to cross the street!
I'm so so clumsy, that I tripped and fell on my way to work, scraped up my right knee... Then two weeks later, on the way to work... sprained my ankle, tripped, tore my pants and scraped up my left knee.
Hopefully, I haven't just jinxed myself...
14No I haven't fallen and now that I am thinking about it, that is pretty lucky. I have even been on wet, muddy trails and slid a bit but have not fallen.
15I typically trail run so I've caught the occasional downhill rock and gone flying. Once while wearing new pants (they were fine, scraped under).
16Like vanonymous, I used to run hurdles and not the greatest natural coordination, so I've done my share of bleeding on the track. I've also just tripped over my feet a few times, usually resulting in a scraped knee or palm. I do have to say, though, that doing sprints in the woods with two dogs sounds like a recipe for disaster.
17I hadn't ever fallen while running fairly often and having logged 300 miles this year. That was until two months ago. I was running a familiar route, it was a gorgeous morning and I think I got so wrapped up in how great I felt that less than 0.2 miles into my run I had a "yard sale" sort of spill -- sunglasses flew off my face and skidded across the sidewalk. Scraped both my right palm and forearm and left knee up pretty badly. My knee and palm still have pretty gnarly scars from it, but I managed to run in a 5K six days later!
18Funny that you just posted this....three weeks ago, literally halfway through a 10 mile training run - I totally bit it! Not sure if I tripped on a shoelace or just because the side of the road was uneven, but both my knees were very bruised - and my left knee was swollen - and both my palms were very bloody. Still feeling (and can tell visually) the effects of that fall! Ouch!
19I've never fallen but I kinda want to now!! I don't mean that as morbid as it sounds and I'm not going to pull a Jim Carrey in Liar Liar or anything-but battle scars are pretty cool!!!
20I trip over myself just walking. My hips and feet turn in so it takes a concious effort to keep them turned out/straight. When I ran, sometimes I completely forgot and ate treadmill and concrete a couple times. Not good. Knees weren't to happy since they're already revolting, and I still have a kink in my right elbow. :\
21No, ironically. I've been fitness exercising for over 20 years, and I've never hurt myself during exercise.
I've always injured myself during non-exercise activities -- walking and chatting with a friend (took a bad fall), gardening (fell on my bottom), walking around the office (bruised my hip against desks), etc. My husband often teases me. He said for a woman who's athletic (bikes, swims, jogs, dances, weight train, etc.), I am awfully clumsy when I'm not exercising.
22I've fallen down a mountain once with my cross country running team, in high school. I still have the scars from that incident. Also, I tripped (over nothing :/) in the park a couple weeks ago.
I really don't know what's wrong with me.
23Chloe Bella that sucks! Also BAD race etiquette! I do a lot of mountain running on the weekends and when I am tired I have had one (or three) incidences when I fell "UP" if you can imagine that.
24GlowingMoon, that cracked me up! I identify with that--although I'm generally clumsy both when exercising or not.
25I ended up falling on an icy hill. The best part was I kept going, sliding on my butt for like 20 seconds. Didn't hurt anything, but turned a spectacular shade of red I'm sure!
26Once I was running and managed to trip on a curb. I fell and scraped my chin and lip on the sidewalk. It wasn't incredibly painful, but I had the AWESOME luck of it being picture day for new ID badges at work that day, so I had to have this horrible-looking gash on my face in my pic for the whole year.
I also fell once when I was walking home on an icy sidewalk...I tripped and landed on my elbow and it swelled up and bruised VERY badly. I think I may have actually broken something when I did it, but it's fine now.
27what a selfish dog. sorry he knocked you down. it's not only selfish but stupid too
good thing your doggy is so nice.
28I used to run outside year round, and one time slipped on a slick patch of ice that was hidden under a fresh layer of snow. I got pretty lucky with how I fell and was able to keep going without any trouble. I just hope no one saw me!
29I waved at somebody and tripped on a non-existent bump in the road and skinned both knees and my palm. It happened in slow motion!
30yes. my love of running is second only to my clutziness. i've broken bones more than once in bad falls. a couple of scraped knees too.
31Yes, I've fallen. That's why I run in the dark, so no one can see me faceplant
