After looking at the 100 largest metropolitan areas in America, Burlington, VT, came out on top as Self magazine's "fittest, healthiest, and happiest" city to live in for women. The magazine studied almost 8,000 different pieces of data in 50 categories and consulted a panel of experts to come up with its rankings. Information factored into the creation of this list includes rates of diseases, air quality, unemployment statistics, and health habits such as exercise and smoking.
The New England city boasts some of the lowest rates of cervical and ovarian cancer deaths in the country, and healthy habits prevail: women walk to work regularly and don't smoke. Where Burlington really shines is in nutrition and food — the city has six times as many food co-ops than the national average, and its farmers markets accept food stamps.

i used to live close to burlington and it is a really nice city.
but it's also really expensive, has a housing shortage and a law enforcement shortage.... and coooolddd winters!!
1Meh. I live near Burlington. Too little, too long of winters. I will be glad to move out of VT next year.
2I live in Wisconsin and my city is obviously too small to be on the list, haha. I picked the next city over, Milwaukee/West Allis because it's probably similar...76 out of 100. The list says there is a lot of depression issues in women. I can see that; Wisconsin can be a slightly depressing state to live in sometimes.
3I live in NYC, which was "below average for air quality"..... DUH!
4Yay! I live 20 minutes from Burlington now, but used to live there and LOVE it. Sure VT has cold Winters, but it's so beautiful up here - and the snow makes the cold fun. You just need to bundle up with the right gear and there's so much to do - ski, snowboard, XC ski, snowshoe, ice skate, hike - you name it. Plus the people here are nicer than anywhere I've been. Everyone is really health conscious, and life in VT feels so much more relaxed.
5lol this was also the winner for best city to raise your kids.
6I've lived the past 4 years out side of Burlington and love it. yes it gets cold but there are still a lot of things inside and out.
