Feel like you haven't been getting enough sleep lately even if you've been hitting the hay for 9 hours a night? Turns out that you may be getting enough sleep, but your pre-bedtime activities trick you into thinking you're not.
New reports out of Japan are claiming that people who spend more pre-bedtime hours using the Internet or watching television are more likely to report that they don't get enough sleep, even though they sleep almost as long as people who spend fewer pre-bedtime hours in front of a computer or television screen.
So turn off the computer and the TV (come on, you know you watch TV and play on the internet) way before heading to bed. Pick up a good book, take a bath, meditate, try doing some relaxing exercises like stretching and yoga, or even organize something. Besides, if you're putting in the time to get enough sleep a night, you might as well reap the benefits.
In light of all this, I am curious what you do before bed...

I watch tv/ surf the web, but its hard for me I live in a dorm room, all I have in my room are my computer my tv and bed lol
1Hmmm, I would have to agree with this. Maybe I should read before I go to bed :\
2i read every night before i go to bed, even if it's one page, even if i'm drunk (yes, really). even if i almost fall asleep reading my one page. always.
i also shower. no matter what. (especially if i'm drunk.
)
3i tend to watch tv/surf the web but lately ive been getting into the reading groove and im going to try and stick with that...
4i do all of the above ha ha!
5This is so true. I defintely am doing what the article says not to do. This means I will have to say good night to Sugar a little earlier.
6i deffinatley have to agree with that. I tend to wait until I go to bed before checking my email, and I can never sleep.
7I have fallen asleep to a TV on in my room since 4th grade. Due to this, I can read/work/do my taxes/etc. with the TV on without any bother. It took awhile but I got my boyfriend to live with it, too. It's hard for me to fall asleep WITHOUT the TV! It's so quiet, all there is to do is to think...and think..and think. I set the sleep timer and pass out. Perhaps it's a nasty habit, but I sleep 8 hours a night and never really feel tired, so I think I'm okay!
8i actually like to do some gentle yoga before i get into bed. and once i'm under the covers, i pull out my sudoku book and put my brain to work.
9i've heard that the brain uses about 20% of the body's energy, so doing puzzles in bed helps put me to sleep like nothing i've ever tried before.
My husband and I go to bed early and talk to each other before we go to sleep, at least 30 minutes, sometimes an hour, sometimes more. Thats how I unwind, I can't go to sleep without chatting with him.
10I used to read before bed, but I just watch TV and go on the internet. I just haven't had the time to pick out a good book and settle in, junior year's been just work lately. Not much, mind you, but still some-some.
11I usually come upstairs and check my email, etc., poke around on Sugar, and then after washing up and moisturizing, I read in bed while listening to music (Ipod docked in the Apple HiFi). My problem is that sometimes I read into the wee hours of the morning. But I generally read nightly
12Haha, i am an internet fiend. Ok, I will have to give it up before i sleep.
13I almost always fall asleep with my computer either beside me or in my lap ... not just chatting to friends but doing stressful things like job searching, etc. When I recently went on vacation, I was in a pretty remote village in France and had absolutely no access to the internet. I thought I would suffer but I have to say that it was absolute bliss! I slept a LOT better and was generally happier and felt completely relaxed for the entire week. I even took off my watch (which is a big deal) so I wouldn't know what time it was!
14I usually watch T.V before going to bed. I find it very relaxing and i don't have any trouble falling asleep afterwards. Sometimes I read before going to bed but once i start reading a good book i can't stop so it's not so good for my sleep...
15I will watch tv before bed, but I have a long "getting ready for bed" routine that usually takes 15 minuts to a half hour. I have no problem sleeping at night, but I do wake up tired. I have been saying it's because it's dark in the mornings now, but who knows. I can give it a try I suppose!
16i watch tv before bed. when i get home from work ieat dinner with my family, head to the gym, then come home and play with my boys, so after that i just want to relax. maybe i should try reading a book though cause i do have a hard time falling asleep
17I watch TV before bed because I can't sleep without it! Will & Grace from 11-12 is my savior!
18Jeez...People need to read. If you don't use it, you lose it!
19I actually listen to my ipod.
20I crave routine, and I have a night time routine that is very comforting. I stop watching tv about an hour before bed. After I make the next day's lunches and prepare things that I'll need to take with me to work, I walk the dog, then I go and get ready for bed. I don't turn on any electronics after that point because I'm usually wound down and feeling drowsy. If my husband turns on the tv in the bedroom I usually can't fall asleep that well.
21sammyof2... I've heard that working out 2-3 hours before bed can impare your sleep...
22Not sure that's the case with you, but just a thought.
I know how hard it is to fit the gym into a routine, and when you find a good time stick with it, just a thought for you!
I like to read before I go to bed, but my boyfriend watches TV, so I guess I end up doing both.
23I am so guilty of this!! I always surf the web and it keeps me up well past the time I plan on going to sleep. Then I sleep 8-9 hours and feel guilty that I wake up much later than I planned on... I will stop surfing for a week and see if my sleep habits improve!
24Watch TV/Surf the web.
