Maria Sharapova, defending U.S. Open champion, is one sharp dresser. Her red tennis dress for nighttime play (she has a different outfit dedicated for daytime play) seems more evening gown than tennis dress, to me.

OK, so the tennis dress, designed by Nike, is a celebration of New York in functional fashion form. The bright red-flame color represents the Big Apple and the 600 Swarovski crystals are reminiscent of the Manhattan skyline. The back has three crystal buttons down the back, creating a keyhole effect - I don't think that has anything to do directly with NYC, it just looks cool. The functional element is the fabric and construction. The material is breathable wicking jersey constructed with a no-sew technique where seams bonded with heat and silicone instead of thread.
Sharapova described the dress as simple and classy, which suits her taste since she doesn't like things that are "tacky." I am not sure I am convinced on the crystals and the color though. I don't know about you, but I think the over all look is a little more ice skating costume then tennis dress. What do you think?

i think it's cool, and she looks great in it. It's the US Open! A girl can get a little fashionable.
i love it
Serena and Venus can look cute without going over the top. I am undecided on this get-up.
sure - why not?!
it really does look like an ice-skating costume thing.
I think it's hot. Good for her for getting nike to make her dresses for all her tournaments (she's got THREE for the U.S. open). The best part about playing tennis is wearing the dresses and skirts!!
I put my vote in for ice skating costume. It would be cute if she was a figure skater, but not for a tennis player.
The dress itself is cool, but I'm surprised she is allowed to wear it while playing. I feel like if I was playing against her it would give her an unfair advantage because the color would be blinding or distracting, it would tire my eyes out and make it hard to see the ball.
Love it! But is there another color? Like pastel hues? Not getting this shade of red in my system...
I love it. I think it works with the casual hair style & matching sneakers. I wouldn't like it if it were with pumps, or if her hair was in an up-do or something- then it would look silly.
The color is beautiful on Maria. The dress is designed for tennis, and the fabric is functional. The lines are classic (and classy!). Why shouldn't she look elegant while competing?
maybe a little less sparkle and nike logo and it would be easier to transition
love the color on her!
The color is absolutely beautiful !
Not cool. If it had less glitz I think it would be cute but she just looks ridiculous to me. It reminds me of seeing 8 and 9 year old girls who wearing sneakers with their dresses. Not cute!
i like it
I think without the crystals it would be really cute. Why shouldn't she get to dress up a little on the tennis court?
i like it , she have a nice body , why not wear something flattering.
I think it's HOT!
i love it!
I like it
Looks cheap.
honestly....i was a division 1 athlete in college and can i just SAY that our uniforms were NOT that cute...and seriously...why shouldn't uniforms be fashionable...you can play a hard core sport and always look pretty doing so! no worries yall...i just added a ribbon to my pony tail! ha!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this! go maria!
Why not look hot? If it doesn't get in the way of her game play, cool.
Love it!! I wish my tennis dress could be this cute...but then again, I am not Maria!!!! LoL
One word... HOT!
Don't like the sparkles. Otherwise, cool.
nice, she looks hot!
It's really fantastic. Much different from things I have seen before on the tennis court. If it's functional and it won't get in her way or distract anyone why not show fashion on the court?
And TooSugar: this is a night game outfit, so the color would be more subtle. I do agree thought that it would be distracting during the day.
I think it's fun. Not only is it much more interesting than most traditional tennis outfits (the typical neutrals are so boring), but if it distracts her opponents too, even better!
It's cute, but how do you wear a sports bra under that thing? I would be miserable playing tennis without a sports bra!
It's good that she can look cute and sporty! I like the idea.
I think its cool she looks pretty!
rockin body rockin dress, beautiful girl. Nike knows fashion.
I wish I was at The Open this year this dress would look great under the lights at night!
She's playing tennis. She's getting sweaty. Why make such an effort to sparkle?
OW!!! MY EYES!!! they burn from the brightness!!!
She`s not only a great plear, but she looks great too.And this dress is a great choice!
