Dear Fitsugar,
I have been working out and trying to be healthier for about 5 months now.
I'm a college student so I workout Monday - Thursday in the evening and I
eat dinner about an hour before. This semester though, I am taking a
Fitness walking class at 7:00 am!!! I was wondering, should I eat breakfast
before or after I take that class.

What a great way to start the day. After not eating for 8 hours while sleeping, you will need to refuel your body before working out. But you will probably not have enough time to prepare or even digest a full meal. Since carbs are easier to digest than protein or fat, you should stick to carbs. Plus carbs are easily converted into fuel for your muscles. If your plan is to get up and go, try eating a banana, a piece of whole wheat toast or a small cup of nonfat yogurt. You might need to experiment with the right food or combinations of foods that work best for you as a pre-workout snack. Follow your workout with a well balanced meal that includes all the macro nutrients - fat, protein and carbs.

Ugh... I will get sick if I don't eat anything before a work-out. I do just what Fit says and either eat a yogurt or a banana.
1I sometimes have an apple with peanut butter or throw a little pb on whole wheat bread.
2I need at least 2 hours after I eat b4 I can workout.
3Yikes, I haven't been eating anything before my morning workout....
4I don't eat anything before my morning work outs either. I like to eat afterwards and if I'm only going to burn a few hundred calories, I don't want to negate the purpose of my workout. However, my bf just told me that I could be burning muscle instead of fat if I don't eat beforehand. So I like fit's comments. However, I can't eat dairy before I run.
5I workout at 5am a few days a week. I usually grab one of the following:
-a small handful of trailmix
-one graham cracker
-1/2 an apple
I've worked out in the morning with out eating anything, but I don't last as long, but at the same time I don't want to eat anything heavy. These snacks are perfect.
6Yeah, I also go run at the park at around 7:00 am but I don't eat anything before this. I have a glass of water, but something solid, not really. I thought it was something good, but I guess not. I'll have to try the banana.
7I have trouble eating food before a workout too. Fruit maybe (good reminder), and I should try whole wheat toast, but in general, I like to workout a couple of hours at least after I eat. I usually eat right after too.
8Like blackjade, I also work out a few times a week at 5am. I don't have to time to let a whole yogurt cup or toast digest, so I usually grab something small to give me some more stamina, including one of the following:
-1 graham cracker (I thought I was the only one, blackjade!
)
-2 clementines
-Small handful cereal (Such as Kashi or mulit-grain Cheerios)
-1/2 banana
Then, once I return from my workout and get showered and ready for work, then I eat my regular breakfast.
9I don't like to eat solid food before I go out and do cardio. I feel like all the blood rushing to my stomach takes away from my workout, so I usually eat a nice breakfast within a half hour of completing my workout.
I used to eat a small breakfast before rowing, but that was in anticipation of several hours of working out...
10I used to work out at 5:30 every morning and its a fine line between having something that will give you energy and eating something that will make you feel sick when you're running. I used to eat one of those little single-serving containers of no sugar added applesauce and drink a mini gatorade about an hour beforehand.
It worked great and never upset my stomach, especially because food can make me feel nauseous in the morning. There's nothing worse than running when you can feel the food sloshing around...yuck.
11I heard a good small snack in the a.m. before working out is whole-wheat toast with some jam.
12I have a small apple and a Source, no sugar added yogurt before going to the gym. Sometimes a green tea as well.
13I work out every morning and I dont eat before! I eat @ 11 or 12 depending on when i have class. But I drink green or black tea before I got to give me an energy boost!
14i like to eat a piece of fruit- preferably a peach, nectarine kiwi fruit or apricot.
15Oatmeal! I will say it again: OATMEAL! So healthy and good for you. I eat it at least once a day and always before I work out. My favorite is Weight Control by Quaker Oats, Maple Sugar flavored. Has 160 calories and I can barely eat the whole thing. Try it and you won't be disapointed.
16I love Oatmeal! it is the best! and plus eat breakfast i will faint!
