Being pregnant has its pros and cons. Topping the list on the positive side, in my opinion, is the bundle of joy you get at the end of the process. The cons...well, my list is too long to go into here, but one concern from many women is hair dye. Is it something to avoid when prego?
According to The Mayo Clinic there really is no definitive answer. While it is likely the skin absorbs a small amount of dye, it isn't really clear how much if any reaches the fetus. However, some recent studies suggest an association between dying your hair when pregnant and some childhood cancers, but the evidence is weak. The best bet is to talk to your obstetrician, since he or she will likely have an opinion on the matter.
For me, I went the "better safe than sorry" route and avoided hair dye while I was prego, but there are ways to minimize the amount of hair dye that may be absorbed through your skin. Here are a few tips from the FDA:
- Don't leave dye on your hair any longer than needed.
- Rinse your scalp thoroughly with water after use of hair dye.
- Wear gloves when applying hair dye.
Fit's Tip: The texture and thickness of a woman's hair can change drastically during pregnancy, so you might want to skip the process for this reason too.
I am wondering what you all think on this matter - would you dye or have you dyed your hair when pregnant? Let me know in the comment section below.

I am currently 19 weeks pregnant and waited until 14 weeks to have my hair professionally highlighted. I figured (based on reading and medical advice) after the first trimester was reasonably safe. However, my hair grows very slowly and I probably won't need it done again for several more months, right before I deliver.
1I usually just dye my hair from dark brown to darker brown. I would probably forego it if I got pregnant, I doubt I would miss it.
2i think i would jsut have my hari dyed darker so no roots could be seen and leave it at that.
3I highlighted my hair throughout my pregnancy and, so far, he's normal.
4I stopped dying my hair when we decided to try to get pregnant. Now that's she's almost 17 month old, it's been 3 years since I've colored my hair. I decided to take the better safe than sorry route, and I ended up discovering I love the natural color of my hair anyway.
5I got highlights every couple of months while I was pregnant. You're going to have enough body issues while pregnant, at least your hair can look good.
6a coworker of mine had used vegetable dyes... it was a natural coloring (she only went about 2 shades darker, prob. wouldnt work for highlights) and she waited until after her first trimester.
7I am a natural blond so
8i did not put any thing
on my hair.
My ob said it was perfectly fine to dye my hair. The negatives I've heard is that your hair might not come out the color you expect (and that's why you should see a pro @ this time). I've heard highlights are not as risky or whatever you wanna take it, but because they aren't touching the scalp or aren't doing it as much?! Yeah, i dont know. I'm 20 weeks preg (hey schnappy!!) and i really am getting sick of my hair, but don't knwo what to do w/ it. My doc said it was ok, so I"m ok w/ it, but I'm not sure what to do (red or blonde highlights..or both! or just going more red??)
9A debuted topic indeed, I'm still puzzled.
10I wouldn't do it. But I'm lucky, because I don't dye it anyway.
11I am about a month and two weeks pregnant..and i dye my hair black
12not my whole head just the roots ..because if i didnt i would be completely gray on top..now i have a very public job..what should i do wear a hat for my whole pregnancy,??
