No matter how healthy my lunch is there are still days where I hit that dreaded afternoon slump. My eyes begin to glaze over and I start to zone out at my desk. A quick walk outside usually helps, but, depending on my workload, I can't always get away.
Luckily I've found a quick and simple solution in the form of rosemary or peppermint oil. I know that there are doubts surrounding the validity of aromatherapy, but I definitely feel refreshed after taking a small whiff of these oils — I'm more awake, lifted, and ready to work.
If oils are hard for you to find, keep a lemon at your desk for afternoon sniffing. Citrus fragrances, especially lemons, have been shown to lift people's moods.
Have you ever used aromatherapy as a pick-me-up? If not, how do you beat your afternoon slump? Tell me in the comments section below.

1I hate the afternoon slump. I try and get up and move around. I save the aromatherapy for my evening bubble baths.
My last job had rules that no food could be consumed at your desk, you could not wear strong perfumes and scented candles and potpourri were forbidden within your cube. I'm almost certain the aromatherapy oils would have had HR over complaining. I like that idea though - I wonder if I could get away with it at my current company.
2Sleep. I sleep.
3I drink peppermint tea!
4cinnamon gum helps me!
5I usually just have a cup of tea, or do some yoga in between classes! Works like a charm!
6cup of tea - usually Kusmi green tea, Lady grey or something else, and some fruit.
7I haven't had this problem much since I cut back on carbs, but when I do I opt for the brisk walk.
8it's apple season so I have one with some peanut butter for an afternoon snack & a Lipton black tea. If it's herbal tea, it'll just make me think of sleep.
9black tea and/ or a snack
10A cup of coffee and an apple usually wakes me up pretty quickly.
11a brisk walk with the recent addition to the family, a second dog, Mojo. We swore we wouldn't get a puppy but at 11 months and full grown, we did anyways. Something about those rescue dogs gets my heart every time. Either way, he loves his walks and needs work on the leash, so I end up working my legs and arms as I restrain all sixty pounds of him. He makes me laugh, jog a little, and the brisk air of October keeps me alert and satisfied.
The only way this won't work is if I'm running on less than 7 hours of solid sleep. NOTHING can cure that!
12Coffee. Lots and lots of delicious extremely strong coffee.
13Autums_Eleg took it right out of my mouth. Lots and Lots. lol
14oop sorry, "Autumns_Eleg"
15Music!! And...sunshine!
16Lucky for those who can't use potpori or a candle, etc. There are blank inhalers available that you can soak in your favororite aroma and sniff. They are like the old Vick's inahlers.
17A short walk which is usually not possible so a cup of tea and an apple or other fruit, or on really awful days, a candy bar.
18Diet Pepsi or coffee. I know I should take a walk but sometimes gravity is just too strong.
19a good walk and then when I get back to my office I close the blinds and the door and have a really good stretch session. Then usually a bottle of water or sometimes tea.
20On Tuesdays and Thursdays I do an hour of yoga at lunch time and then eat a light lunch afterwards. I find that on these days - I never feel an afternoon slump. So maybe I should do yoga everyday at lunch!
21- Tea, usually - Fresh air - Tart tasting snack like a granny smith apple - A good laugh with someone - Neck massage
22I eat a bananna in the late afternoon. It also helps boost my energy for my gym workout.
