Since running is one of my favorite forms of cardio, I'm a big fan of the treadmill when I can't get outside for a run. I'm also big into the elliptical, and by the looks of my gym, it appears tons of other people are too. While it's a popular piece of gym equipment for so many reasons, there are also some disadvantages to using one. Check out the chart below to see if an elliptical is the right machine for you.
| Pros |
Cons |
- The circular motion and the fact that you're not pounding your feet down with each step is easier on your knees than running outside on concrete or on a treadmill.
- The platforms for your feet are always free of rocks, trash, dog poo, and ice, so you can count on where you're stepping to be safe and clean.
|
- Although using an elliptical is less impact on your joints, it also requires less effort, so people complain that it's too easy.
- Since your feet need to stay on those little platforms, you feel like you have less control over your movements, and it's less natural for someone who's used to running.

Cons |
- You control the pace by moving your legs slower or faster.
- By increasing the resistance of the foot pedals you can make your workout more challenging for your legs and booty. You can also pedal backward to focus on working your backside.
- You can also get an arm and upper back workout by adjusting the tension of the handles.
- Since you're inside, you can watch TV to beat boredom.
- The readout keeps track of your workout data including time, speed, distance, and calories burned, so you can monitor your progress.
- Whether it's a torrential downpour outside or it's nighttime, you can always get in your workout.
- It's a safe way to burn calories if you're afraid to exercise outside in your neighborhood.
|
- Since you're in control of how fast your legs are moving, it's easier to slack off as compared to using a treadmill, which keeps the same pace.
- Since they're a one-size-fits-all kind of machine, someone who's got a naturally shorter stride may end up hyper-extending their knees, which could lead to injury.
- If you don't belong to a gym, ellipticals aren't cheap and you'll end up spending around $2,000 for a good one.
- Just like any other piece of cardio equipment, the repetition of doing the same thing over again can be so boring that you cut your workout short.
- The readout on the machine may not be accurate.
- Ellipticals require electricity, so they're not exactly the greenest type of exercise. Plus, if there's a power outage, you can't work out.

I prefer the treadmill, if I have to use a machine, but would much rather run outside. Not only is it more fun, free, something I can do with my dog, and a great way to get some fresh air, but I feel like I get a better workout.
1It's so much better to run outside. But, like the pros said, if your neighborhood is not safe or its nighttime it may not be very smart to run outside.
2Anyone who says the elliptical is too easy is obviously not using it correctly. If you put the right resistance for your fitness level, I go about a level 10, then its an amazing workout. The elliptical is my favorite piece of workout equipment
3I like the elliptical when I go to the gym at 5:30am. It's a great way to warm my body up. I can sweat and get a workout on it, too- and though I usually run outside or do the treadmill I know girlfriends that solely do the elliptical and they look great.
4I prefer running but I also don't feel that the elliptical is neccesarily easy and agree with simplyfab87, you just need to bump up the resistance and go faster if you feel it is. Sometimes though my feet will fall asleep when I use the elliptical which isnt very pleasant.
5I prefer running bc I feel the energy in my whole body. The elliptical is just too boring for me. I cant fantasize about being an athlete when I am on the elliptical, but I do when I am running...which always keeps me running longer.
6I don't think the elliptical is too easy. First time I hopped on one I was worn out within ten minutes! It also took a lot of concentration for me to stay on the footpads because I couldn't strap my feet in. (It was quite embarrassing when my BF tried to have a conversation and I stacked it.)
7But I like to use it, especially when they have little book holders. I don't even really notice the time whizz by then.
I love the ellipitical. I like going backwards to work my body from a different angle, and I actually find it less boring than running on a treadmill because I use the random program to change the resistance and the direction of my legs as I workout so I'm not always moving in the exact same way. I agree with others who have said it is definitely not an easy workout if you up the resistance sufficiently.
8This is pretty much the only thing I use when I work out — which happens maybe once every four months. Never thought of going backward, though. I will try that... in FEBRUARY.
9I have had to rely more on the elliptical for my cardio since my running has been curbed by injuries. It is only too easy if you put the resistance down really low so the momentum of the pedals does a lot of the work. I see a lot of people at my gym doing that, actually. I put the resistance at around 14 (out of 25 levels) and it's TOUGH! Also, they do make ellipticals with adjustable stride lengths, so if you're extremely tall or short you could try one of those. In my experience with selling them, the stride length of the machine has less to do with the height of the user than it does the feel of the motion. If you set the stride to a longer length, it feels more like you're running and if it's shorter, you feel more like you're hiking.
10Just about any piece of cardio equipment is as easy or hard as you want to make it. Over the past few months, I have gotten addicted to the rowing machine. It really gives me a great full body w/o.
11I haven't used the elliptical in a long time. I trail jog.
12I'm a runner, but a year ago when I had a knee injury, the elliptical was my savior.
13if you can push yourself, the elliptical can be a GREAT workout. i would up the resistance and the incline and be DRIPPING sweat. but there would often be someone next to me just cruising without any effort. but then, most workouts are that way.
I go trail jogging but when I am in the gym I use this machine for my warm up. It's OK but I wouldn't use it regularly like I used to. I didn't feel like it gave me as good a workout as running does.
14I have a lot of joint issues, pain in my knees and hips especially, so the elliptical is perfect for me. I get a good workout, but I don't stress and strain my joints like I did when I was running more often. I still run occasionally but my hip really feels it the next day so I can only do it every once in a while.
