Itchy, flaky, dry skin is a common issue among fit women because they often shower twice a day — once in the morning, and once after a workout. The water washes away the natural oils in your skin that protect it from drying out. On top of that, now that cooler temps are moving in for many of us, we're indulging in longer, hotter showers to warm us up, which dries our skin out even more.
If you want to do your largest organ a favor, aim to be under the water for less than 10 minutes, and opt for warm water instead of a steaming hot stream. When you get out of the shower, pat yourself dry (don't rub), and then immediately moisturize your skin to seal in the moisture.

I try and arrange my daily showers so that it falls after I have worked out so I don't shower more than once a day. I just can't justify wasting that much water.
However, my showers are always hot to warm me up - living in the north east where we are already dropping into the low 40's at night, it's a must. It's still too warm during the day to turn the heat on (70's) but the house quickly gets cold overnight (guess it's not real insulated) and at $150-200 a month heating bills, I just don't want to heat the house yet.
So hot showers it is - I just follow up with a real good moisturizing oil and lotion while my skin is still damp.
1My one little luxury when it's cold outside is my long hot shower. We have an old house with poor insulation and the bathroom has all exterior walls, so it gets CHILLY in there in the winter! So I have to warm up in the shower for a good 10-12 minutes and then hop out and dry off really quickly. When I'm running late for work, I'll take a super-short shower...3 minutes max.
