In my yoga class last week, I asked one of my students if she was Italian, and she answered, "Yes, did you know because of my big butt?" I was stunned. I said, "No because of your last name. And first of all your booty is far from big, and second of all, I've never heard that Italians are known for their big bums."
I'm definitely not one to promote insensitive, big blanket statements about stereotypes, but some folks identify them and other just plain don't. I am wondering about you. Do you fit the bill when it comes to physical features commonly associated with your ethnic background or not?

No. I don't really have the typical Indian body so to speak. I'm curvy in different places.
1People always think I'm Italian because of my dark hair, but I'm actually Jewish.
2Beaner, people often think I'm Jewish because of my dark hair, my German last name, and, well, my nose. But I'm actually Italian! So yeah, I fit my stereotype.
3My favorite quote from Samantha Who was when Samantha's friend was describing what she does to get ready for a date, "go shopping, wax, get a mani/pedi, get hair done, spa, wax, makeup"
Samantha says, you said wax twice. And she replied, I know. I'm Italian.
So true!! Especially for me...
4Oh yes, and the nose... ah, the nose...
5I'm 100 percent Finnish, although I was born in the US and I have had people approach me on the street and specifically ask me if I was from Finland (which I never expected, Finnish is not the most common of ethnicities in the US). I have strawberry blond hair and the inner eye folds that are common of Scandinavians.
6Mostly typical Latina features: Pear shaped, wide hips, strong legs, dark curly hair, olive skin and dark eyes. I think I look faily Hispanic, but most times I have Middle Eastern people always asking me if I'm Moroccan. So now I'm just confused.
7haha Smacks, my roommate is indian and she regularly has people come up to her and talk to her in spanish. At least middle eastern is semi-closer to Latin American in terms of looks. Indian to latin american doesn't make any sense. Moroccans are very light skinned typically, but other than skin color I don't think there are many similarities...
8I'm serbo-croatian and I definitely have the high cheek bones, delicate facial features, and thin body frame (read lack of boobs/hips) of eastern european women. I have the pale skin and eyes too, just not the dark hair. I somehow ended up with blonde hair which nobody in my family has.
For some reason everybody thinks I'm german because of the blonde hair.
9I usually get Jewish because of the spelling of my first name... but other than that I don't think so?!
10I've got the Middle Eastern nose, but really, when people guess it is a toss up between Arab, Jewish, Italian, or Greek. All have pretty much the same features.
11I would say that I fit the stereotype of an Irish girl pretty well: pale, green eyes, "rosy" cheeks, and big mothering hips (to stereotypically bear dozens of kids!)
12No I do not fit the the physical stereotype of my nationality. I'm Asian and Asians in general are not curvy. Non Asians call me fit because of my muscle tone, but Asians call me fat because of my curves. Sucks
13Im Latina on top, but a white girl on the bottom. I have big breasts and curves on top but skinny legs and no butt. I have white girl syndrome, no matter what i do, i can never get a butt! i always gain weight on top. its frustating haha.

No, that's definitely Eastern European! My heritage is entirely Polish/Czech and I have the high cheekbones and blonde hair too, as does most of my family, as well as the thin frame. I guess I differ from you in that I do have some fairly broad shoulders and good sized boobs, but still no hips! Ha, good peasant stock, I suppose! And now instead of my maiden (ethnic Polish) last name, my last name now is the second most common in the country!
15Not really. Everyone expects Irish people to be pale, ginger & freckly. While I'm surely pale, I'm neither freckly or ginger!
16I'm German and yes, I fit the stereotype: short, stocky, blonde hair, blue eyes, and basically the ugliest legs ever. I live in Wisconsin, so a lot of people are German as well.
17I'm Ukrainian. I am pale with dark blonde/light brown hair and brown eyes and pale skin. Most people can suspect I'm Ukrainian or Russian and if not, then usually they think I'm Polish or German.
18Or they could just tell I'm Ukranian from my name (it's totally Eastern European).
19I mean it's totally UKRAINIAN.
20I'm Asian, and to my other ethnicity friends, I look average, but to my Asian friends and family, I'm gigantic. Sadly, I will never be a stick thin Asian, but my boyfriend loves my bottom, so I guess there's a plus!
21my mom is from eastern europe, hungary actually, and my dads from britain, i am the typical hungarian! v.pale, too long of limbs for my body,(read: gangly) tiny wrists, light brown hair and a slight frame. i went to budapest last winter, and evryone there looked like me! i was amazed!
22Im a quarter Norwegian (everything else is random -- I'm a mutt), and I have extremely pale skin and I'm thin like everyone on my mom's side -- I just don't have light hair. Otherwise, I do look like them. I'm glad because I'm very proud of my heritage
23Umm... what's the stereotype for Americans?
Really I don't know. I'm very active. Try to walk everywhere. Will try anything. I'm not loud but I'm aggressive and proactive. But I'm not in tip-top physical shape...yet.
The only thing that comes to mind but American physical stereotypes is those Propaganda films from the a1950s where the women had hourglass figures and looked exceptional all the time and the men were dapper and built like Jack LaLanne. The only Black Americans in those films were maids, chauffeurs or bus drivers, who were chubby.
24i'm half norwegian and half irish, and i think i fit my stereotypes pretty well. i'm very tall, blonde and blue eyed, like to have a good time and don't mind a good fight haha. but i agree with wackdoodle...i mostly think of myself as an american, and i don't know what the stereotypes would be for that
25i'm black and have a large behind even though i'm petite and workout, so, um, yeah.
26I've never heard of any Scottish/Irish stereotypes, so not really. Except for the freckles.
27Do you mean ethnicity? Nationality implies where you hold your citizenship.
28Sarah - Do you have examples of the eye fold that you mentioned? I'm curious about that.
As for me...it's a tossup. People can tell a bit of Irish in me (love a good fight, and have a sh*tload of freckles on my arms and such, but not much on face), and maybe a bit of Scandinavian from my facial features.
I'm a mix of English, Irish, Welsh, and Norwegian (Scandinavian), sooo yeah. Most people tend to guess I'm from Eastern Europe 'cause of my "deaf accent", which is really weird!
29Well let's see I am as much Japanese as I am any other single ethnicity and I don't look it at all but I am also Irish and I do have red hair so I guess it just depends on what part of me and which ethnicity you are comparing. People say I look like my mom if your really look at us and she definitely looks Japanese.
30I am German from the Rheinland and the people from this area have a very specific look (Claudia Schiffer is from Rheinland but unfortunately I don't resemble her that much). I have a very German face (that's at least what I think) with high cheekbones, blond hair, blue eyes. My skin is super pale in the winter but tans easily which is also a German thing. And I am fairly tall which is also something German.
But I am also half Austrian and Austrians are a genetic mix of Eastern Europeans, Italians and Germans. My shape is definitely more Italian, I am super-pear-shaped and have a really great time shopping for dresses and bathing suits in Italy because they accommodate my shape much better.
Funnily enough, when I let people guess where I am from, they mostly say Sweden or Poland.
31Yep. Small and wears glasses. Classic asian
32I'm asian - more specifically, chinese.
bone thin? no
33flat chest? no
flat butt? hell no
big calves? yes
wide feet? yes
sparse body hair? no
my mother is white (spanish and indeterminately european -- german, english, french, polish, et cetera et cetera et cetera) and my father is mexican, and i really do feel like i don't fit in the stereotypes of either nationality because i am a mutt. i definitely have a butt, but that's from all the squats i've done working out and all the miles i've run, but i don't really have boobs, and my hair isn't coarse or curly -- and my skin is very light. most people don't think i'm hispanic, but they don't look at me and think i'm 100% caucasian either. my mexican cousins and i all look alike though, we're all very pale as opposed to being olive skinned.
34Um, I am not sure what physical features French/German people have... other than being SNOOTY - which I can turn on & off like a light switch - ha ha! I am blond though, which some people consider a German thing... although my grandfather is DARK BROWN, so maybe not... Now I am curious about "what French people LOOK like".
35stars of sorrow:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicanthic_fold
epicanthic eye folds are most commonly thought of as occurring in asian populations, but they are also very common in Scandinavia. My entire family has them.
36I'm Mexican, but I am tall, white and my face looks like Rory Gilmore, I have brown eyes, but all my family are blonds and have blue and green ayes. So I do not feel that fit on the mexican physical features like Eva Longoria, etc.
37Well, India has a billion people, of all different body shapes and skin colors, so I'm not really sure what the stereotype is. I am pear-shaped, no butt, and have big eyes--I guess those parts are stereotypically Indian. But I don't have a big chest nor dark skin.
38schonefrauen, alexis bledel (rory gilmore) is actually hispanic, argentinian i believe. so maybe you are similar for that reason. her first language was spanish.
39i do look like a typical scandinavian. mostly because of last name. then i quess it's because of my blond hair, even if i dye them dark! and high cheek bones. but i'm not tall at all which is typical here and my foreign friends are surprised for that because that seemed to be one of the rare things they knew about my country.
40I'm latin, short, dark hair, dark eyes, dark skin, big bubbies, strong legs but no butt for me.
41I'm Belgian and I have no idea what our ethnic features would be. However, when I travel, people usually think I'm German. I'm guessing because of me being blond, and my blue eyes and pale skin.
42I'm Asian and I guess I have some stereotypical features - short, yellow (undertones!), straight black hair - but I have a large bust and have never been stick thin.
43Blond, very very blue eyes and fair skin. I guess I fit the stereotype of the typical Icelander
44My Dad is German and my Mom has strong Blackfoot heritage, My great-great grandma was full Blackfoot. I used to tan like a crazy person in high school and looked more native american than anything. I still get asked "what are you." to which I respond "A girl." people can be so subtle.
45I have Irish and Scottish roots, but the only thing I really hear from people are comments about drinking. I don't know of any actual body stereotype. What would an American stereotype be, obese and full of mcdonalds? What an interesting topic, fit.
46I am so not. Singaporean Chinese girls are usually skinny and chestless but I'm very curvy and have a large chest.
47I don't think "american" can be an ethnicity - it's a nationality. The USA is a place made up of people from all over the world. While there is a small indiginous population (native americans), most americans can trace their family tree back to other countries/continents.
Whereas "chinese" or "swedish" can be both an ethnicity and/or a nationality. I don't think many chinese people can trace their family tree to countries other than China. And even within China (or India for that matter), there are a lot of different ethnicities.
I consider my nationality american but my ethnicity is serbo-croatian. My family is from what used to be Yugoslavia, however my mom is croatian and my dad is serbian, different ethnicities that were within the same country. I don't think there is any one physical trait that is american - we're too diverse a nation ethnically.
48ally
Are you from Ukraine? My hubby is.
49taylvs3: Yeah, that's right she is Hispanic, so do I, but we have heritage on our genes that make us look like determined people from Europe. Like she, everybody thinks that she is the "all american girl" but the reality there is not a sample who says how a american girls should look like. When nobody knows me, they think that I am a foreigner, mostly Danish, American or German. One guy told me once that he though I was a Jew for my Brook Shields' eyebrows. LOL. We can never know what to expect, because always is the tag, and later "OMG I though you were ..."
