It is no secret that the female brain is different than its male counter part. It seems these differences are giving us headaches, and I mean that literally. Women are 3 times more likely to suffer from migraines. A recent study proved that it isn't all in our heads (figuratively speaking).
Advances in brain imaging technology now suggest that migraines may start as a result of brain excitability. People with migraines show dramatic waves of brain activity that spread across the surface of the brain. This activity is thought to trigger not only the severe pain associated with migraines but also the visual symptoms, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating often associated with migraines. Researchers believe many factors, like genes, hormones, and environmental triggers like stress, diet, and
changes in sleep patterns, may contribute to migraines in both sexes.

Migrains could also lead to work problems.

1Ugh, no fair...optical migraines are a b*tch. I'd like to see a guy try to take one on any day, I don't think I've ever known a guy who gets migraines!
2I'll go months without one then BAM! I'll get hit with several in a month or they'll keep coming for months on end. What irks me are the people who actually think Excedrin Migraine works. Um, sorry, but if you think that...IT'S NOT A REAL MIGRAINE FOLKS! Sometimes I can't even get prescription meds to work. BOO.
3Migraines are terrible. I hate the dizziness, loss of vision and the vomiting. It's ten times worse to throw up when you can't see anything! I have to agree with kiddy...finding a migraine medicine that actually works is a difficult task.
4Mine are atypical and occipital, it took them awhile to realize that they were migraines. And longer to find decent meds (my triggers, when I have one, are soy and barometric pressure so there's only so much I can do when it's stormy) but at least there's something I can do sometimes. Plus the vertigo is...interesting...
5thank you!
6I hate migraines. Luckily i don't get as many as i used to. I used to get them like several times a week starting when i was like 13. The doctor's couldn't figure out what was happening. one dr. told my mom, there is nothing wrong with her she just doesn't want to go to school! i could have punched him. Who would make up a migraine? it's not very pleasant having to be in a room with no light so your head doesn't explode and not being able to see because you have spots in your eyes.
7Yeah, migraines are real, and they are multi-symptomatic hence hard to diagnose and treat. Different triggers for different people and some drugs work for one woman but not the other. I am ecstatic cos after years of suffering I finally found one med that works. And excedrin migraine does NOT WORK, I agree kiddylnd!
8I agree with Kiddylnd too. I've actually given up on trying new medications. Nothing works.
