We all know that health officials have banned smoking in several cities throughout the United States with more on the way because of the harmful effects of smoking on everyone. But did we ever think that they would be able to ban fat? To find out if they have, read more
There has been a lot of buzz recently surrounding a healthy proposal breakthrough hitting the streets of New York City and Chicago. If this newest proposal gets approved, trans fats (think hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils) which are responsible for the premature death of thousands of people each year, will no longer be permitted in the cooking processes at restaurants starting July 1, 2007. So while we all STILL really have no idea what they are putting in our food behind those closed doors in our favorite restaurants, at least New Yorkers could have the piece of mind that the ‘secret ingredient’ is not trans fat.

This won't change the fact that I won't eat at fast food chains. But I'm glad that they're doing this.
1Now make them cut back on portion size and sodium and maybe.. probably not, but maybe it would be even so much as 25% healthier for you to eat.
2ajs
I LOVE french fries but I also LOVE my waistline!
Just say NO to transfat!!
3Then dont eat it. Point blank if its so unhealthy dont eat it we all have control over our own bodys. Dont ruin it for those of us that dont care or know how to eat it in moderation. Its bad enough KFC is changing I mean come on its going to really ruin the food. There go my pregnancy cravings.

LOL t0x!! I hear ya on the kfc, but they said they did tastes tests and people couldn't tell the difference. I hope it tastes the same, You know I love me some fried chicken, only mine and kfc's though, mmm I'm hungry now!
5Oh see momo Ill be able to tell bc they told us! Remember when colored ketchup came out lol I couldnt eat it bc I knew it was different. There going to ruin there biscuits I just know it! And thats my main craving right now to I crave KFC biscuits lol Im so mad about this lol So silly I knwo!
6--------------------
Dum de Dum de Dum de Dum
it will never taste the same once they change it. i'm with you t0xxic, if you don't want it, don't eat it. sometimes i want a little transfat to keep me in check. p.s. i need kfc asap.
7wow thats just crazy! It's kinda weird...we're now being told what we can and cannot eat. Feel a lil weird to anyone else?
8lol I might have to take a trip down to KFC for biscuits now.. Just so no one is telling me what to and not to do
9Yall know Im being silly

eeww, yeah the green ketchup never entered my house either, ick. They said they were'nt messin' with the biscuits. let's both try it over the weekend and you tell me what you think about the chicken, my taste buds have a memory of their own, lol, so I'll know the difference, hopefully not...but.........
10IT'S TOO COLD HERE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think this is great. If it's not there, you won't eat it, which will reduce heart disease and child obesity.
11Yah know I was just thinking. See Im having chili that I made last night for lunch right ok then I thought about the meat then I thought about this thread... If they want to get on someone they need to get on these grocery stores that sell you this meat that 73% meat and the rest is fat, they need to make them sell better option bc lets face it people we all cant afford a butchers shop! You go to fast food places knowing its fatty dont work on them work on helping people buy there own food to cook
12Just a thought

Yikes! Next they'll take away your tv because its not good for you, then your alcohol, then how long before they deem sex unhealthy outside of procreation? Anybody else get a creepy Big Brother vibe from this kind of sheyot?
13well I love kfc, but I really do think it's a good idea about the transfat crap.....it's just the oil that's being changed, which will be good for the US, cause there are alot of people addicted to fast food and obese because of it, and the transfat is the culprit. so hopefully their chicken will be the same, i do love the way it tastes!! If ya think about it orange~they're doin' us a favor as far as the fat eating......
14lol aight we will have to do that. It will be hard though bc just knowing its different ick! lol Im such a whiner
Not to be argumentive but if your sitting there feeding your child McDonalds or Bk enough to increase his/her obeseity then you really need your kids taken away

Jen76, yeah, I'm getting that feeling.
16Im just worried about my flavors here
17Remember when they put out those potatoe chips that were cooked in a more healthy oil (that later turned out to cause cancer right?) the taste was totally different... Im all about my tastes

If the taste were *really* the same and the new stuff is healthier, don't you think the restaurants would ALREADY be using it? And advertising about how much healtheir their stuff is? Stinky McBlinky...
21Hells yes. Grrr. Toxy and Momo are gonna be boycotting out front lols

T0x, true, about your 11:11 post.
23i agree with the child obesity issue. i'm being selfish. i'll give up the kfc original taste for the kiddies.
24lol jenn* When I saw that commercial, I said something like that...I was like, that's great and all but why did they wait soooooooooooooo long knowing how unhealthy the transfat oil was! Then I figured it was just cause lately there's been so much competition among fast food places trying to offer more healthy stuff and kfc and mccyd's always got the worst rap sooo....
25I don't eat fast food bc it is so fatty. If it didn't contain trans fats, I would prob pop in and grab a burger more often. There's something to think about too.
26Not me Daltan! lol Parents need to take more responsibility for it! Yes people do have diseases which cause them to be over weight and unhealthy Ill never deny that but you have control over your self if you know that you have high blood pressure, cholestrol, are prone to being over weight, WHY on earth are you eating at McDonalds any way? For the price of feeing a family of 4 at any place you could have bought 2 whole meals that are healthy from an actual store and cook your self. We dont need laws and people ordering us to be healthy we need to do it our selves we need self control something no one will ever gain if were told we cant do it anyways. Not to mention the people that have the rebel attitude. "Oh they say I cant so Im gonna any ways"
27Wow threaten a pregnant womans food an she becomes so whats the word.

BlondeSugar - And if there are enough people like you, the restaurants will stop using it. That's how it should be. I just hate laws that circumvent the people's will.
BTW, I doubt fast food ingredients are a primary cause of childhood obesity. American *lifestyles* are unhealthy. Changing the kind of oil used in fast food restaurants won't solve that.
28They should change the oil in BK's fries maybe it will make them better. I havent eaten them in 10 years.
The new oil would effect half of Mc Donalds menu.
29--------------------

T0x and Jen, you guys really have good points here. Makes it hard to go against them! haha
30You're right, lifestyles are majorly to blame. A lot of kids are just NOT active at all and the combo of that with poor eating habits are a bad combo. There are a lot of factors contributing to childhood obesity. I know that there are a lot of parents who work all day and grab McDonalds for dinner bc it is quick and easy, which is totally understandable and fine, but if that is happening more than once a week, that can be very dangerous for the kids esp if they are not active. Not even obesity, but heart disease. You can have a super fast metabolism, but that fat clogs your arteries and will lead to bigger problems down the road. You can be very thin and high cholesterol.
And now I have a pop freeze damn. Ill go to lunch lol Im starved
31--------------------
Dum de Dum de Dum de Dum
naaaaaaaaaa, but it'll help!
32I'm excited about it though I love junk food so if its healthier kudos to them! I don't think the oil will affect the taste. Wendy's uses that oil and I don't taste the difference one bit on the fries.
33Totally agree t0x, but i don't think 'rents will take more responsibility. When I am a parent, I know I will not take my kids to fast food chains more than once in a while, but there are some unhealthy people out there that actually think the big mac meal and fries is a well-balanced meal. And they are not the people commenting on fitsugar. And they are the reason that trans fats are being taken out of our glorious kfc and micky-ds. they ruined it for us all.
34I have to "weigh" in on this issue. lol. I agree that while in theory it is a great initiative, this is too much telling us what we can or cannot do. What about good ole new york pizza? I say educate the public and let them make a choice. There will be plenty of other places to get trans-fat anyhow. People won't eat healthier until they are ready to or want tto
35i think it's a last desparate resort to save americans by the government. i work in health insurance and you wouldn't believe the health problems that come along with being overweight. many companies won't even insure really overweight people because they're such a liability.
36two thirds of americans are overweight and one third is obese. we're killing ourselves! plus, it's raising taxes (medicare and medicaide are govt funded).
i am pro-banning trans-fat, even though it's a little big brother-ish. we had the choice to eat healthily and we acted like children and filled up on fries and pop.
Im actually genuinly surprised that so many people are agaisnt taking transfats out of foods. By taking out TRANS fats they are not taking all fat. : Unlike other fats, transfats are not required or beneficial for health.
37Instead of looking at it as if the government is trying to regulate something just for the sake of it,look at it like it really is, health officials have discovered that trans fats are linked to serious health conditions, much more so then other componants in food. knowing that something has the potential to do serious harm to people isnt it the responsable thing to do to ban these dangerous fats? For example.. remember when some venician blinds and paints were said to contain led? Well when these were pulled off the market it wasnt a "control" issue; it was a public safety issue.
Like Oprah always says : "when we know better, we do better"
and this is only my opinion so no hate mail please
Nee; my concern is its going to change the way it taste, which Im pretty sure it will as it hasnt been done yet and if it didnt Im sure everyone would be doing it
38--------------------
Dum de Dum de Dum de Dum
I see your point t0xxic, but as far as I know this is a moderatly new finding.
39I think I should add that I think it is great if restaurants want to take out trans fats on their own because they want to serve healthier foods...places like Chipotle already do. But the government saying "you have to do it or close your shop" is completely unfair. What about the little mom and pop stores? They may not have the money to change their ingredients around and stay in business.
40also, i am "obese" and am healthier than my size 4 counter parts....my blood pressure stays around 112/65. My heart and arteries are healthy, my resting pulse is within normal ranges and even my blood sugar is fine. I am learning to be happy with myself and change my lifestyle so that I can lose weight to ensure i stay healthy, but I don't need the government's help. I do things on my own as I feel like it. I am cleaning up my lifestyle because I want to, not beacuse I am being told to. We cannot hold the government responsible for every aspect of our lives. We need to take ownership, responsiblity and accept the consequences of our actions, and this includes eating habits. It isn't the Government's fault i am overweight; they put out guidance on how to eat healthy and lead a healthy lifestyle. Just because people don't want to follow the guidance is no cause for the government to tell businesses how to cook their food. I will choose to eat at establishments that are healthier, but they get my patronage because they already cook that way.
41my state is trying to get a lot of processed foods out of grocery stores!
