This past Spring, the swine flu scare broke out, and, although it seems to have lost momentum, many folks are still nervous about getting the H1N1 virus. Children, healthcare workers, those who work closely with kids, and pregnant women are the ones who are most at risk, but anyone can develop swine flu. With colder weather on its way and flu season soon to follow, I'm wondering . . .

Is it really worth it? There seem to be many risks involved because they just sped through the development of this vaccine. It makes me uneasy.
1There are no more risks than to getting the seasonal flu shot. They are both produced in the exact same way.
2Not planning on it. I feel uneasy that the government gave the vaccine makers protection against law suits. And I'm not at risk either. If I get it, I'm going to stay at home and sleep it off until I recover so that no one else gets it. Also, the majority of hospital healthcare workers aren't getting it either. Too many red flags.
3I don't think we can get the vaccine here in Portugal yet. It will go to healthcare workers first, and to other people at risk. By the time it's available to the rest of the population I'll know more about it and its risk, and then I'll decide...
4Agreed with #2 -- there are no more risks than normal flu shots. People overreact about the lack of safety with this latest round of vaccines vs. previous rounds of normal shots.
That said, I never get flu shots b/c I never get the flu. I wash my hands religiously. Also, I'm pregnant so it's my understanding that it's not recommended.
The one year my husband did get the shot was the sickest he's ever been.
5Actually, it's not true that the risks are the same. The initial version of the H1N1 vaccine available in the US will contain LIVE virus. The regular flu shot does not.
6I have a degree in evolutionary biology and I work as a personal support worker currently while I finish off my second degree in nursing.
There is absolutely no extra danger involved with getting this particular immunization. Anyone who claims otherwise is simply ignorant of basic biology and how the body deals with invading pathogens.
As a healthcare provider I have received dozens upon dozens of vaccinations - both containing live viruses and dead/synthetic ones - and I have never had a single poor reaction. The truth is that 99.9% of people experience either zero or only the mildest symptoms.
The reasons company's that provide vaccines get immunity from lawsuits is NOT because they are not accountable for what they make and sell - it's so that frivolous consumers can't waste time and money(both the company's and the taxpayers) on lawsuits because they got a fever from a flu shot.
7I'm just not worried about it. I've heard it just basically a really bad flu, in which case i'll stay home and watch some daytime tv.
8I'm guessing most people don't realize this, but getting vaccinated isn't just for yourself. It is mostly to stop the spread of the disease, and to protect those that cannot be vaccinated (for example, people who are immunocompromised).
9So, most likely, yes, H1N1 won't affect YOU very much, but you can do much harm to others by spreading it.
nope, I'll stick with the classic flu shot, Nobody has broken out with Swine flu withing a 100 mile radius of where I live
10I'll definitely get the regular flu shot and if my doctor advises me to get the H1N1 shot, I'll get that too.
I'm high risk with asthma and other respiratory problems. Last year's battle with pneumonia after what started out as an upper respiratory infection, I don't want to take anymore risks.
11No no flu shots for me ever again. I'm severely allergic to the suspension agent that is used in the flu vaccine. Last time my doctor tried she told me that the suspension agent had been changed but it hadn't and I suffered big time. All of my joints swelled up and became immoblie, I couldn't breathe cause bronchi swelled and I was running a high fever of 103.
12So the decision is that better for me to not get the vaccine ever again, but if I get the flu (which I haven't in over 3 years ) I'll take Tamiflu again.
I'm a healthcare worker at a hospital, so I'll be getting my regular flu shot and I'll get the H1N1 shot if it's provided because I don't want to spread the virus to any IPs. Although, if I didn't work in a hospital, I probably wouldn't get it because I haven't gotten the flu in probably 8 years. I've got quite a robust immune system, I guess.
13Whenever my mom and I get the flu we get it BAD, so we'll both be getting the shots when they're available.
14I probably won't get the H1N1 flu shot just because I'm lazy. I got the regular flu shot because I happened to be walking past Walgreens and there was a sign screaming that I should come in and get one. Ha.
15no H1N1 vaccine for me, but I did wind up leaving my doctor's office this morning with a regular flu shot, even though I went in for a running injury...and the freakin injection site is killing me...but it's better than the flu
16This is something I've been thinking about quite a bit lately because we're thinking of starting a family. Do I get the shot even if I become pregnant? Especially if I become pregnant? Or avoid it altogether? If anyone has any advice, please spill it. :0)
17I don't care if I get any kind of flu. It gets me out of work and I get to stay home in my PJ's and eat cereal and watch T.V...DARN!
18I refuse to buy into this whole "swine flu" epidemic! It's just the flu people! If I get it, I'll be sick for three days, lose a few pounds, no biggie! It is ridiculous how it's been treated. It's the freaking flu!
19I haven't had the flu in 24 years, so I'm not too worried about it. I'd get one if I were in or if I worked with a higher risk group, or if someone offered me the vaccination for free.
20I'm getting the shot. I'm a teacher and a few of my kids were already quarantined with H1N1 last year. Many of them also spent the summer in high risk areas where there have been deaths from the virus.
21I've never had the flu, and never before this year gotten the flu shot. But I was at my doctors and she suggested it, so I got the seasonal flu vaccine. If the H1N1 vaccine had been available at the time, I probably would've gotten that as well. But I don't think I'll go out of my way to get it. I've got a pretty strong immune system, I think I'll be fine.
22I'm only getting it if it was produced by Vaxine. The Aussie government pulled Vaxine's funding because they were a tiny drug company instead of a pharmaceutical giant.
23Vaxine doesn't use eggs when they produce the serum, and the vaccine is completely safe for people with allergies.
Sounds better than something that could set off a reaction!
No, it's not just the "freakin flu". The "regular" flu rarely kills anyone other than people over 65 (90% of deaths are in this group) , the very young and those in other age groups who have significant health problems. The majority people who have died of this flu were between 20-49, many of them had no pre-existing health problems. It is believed this happens because of an over-reaction of the immune system called a cytokine storm which severely damages the lungs. This is more likely to happen in people with strong immune systems. No one can predict in advance who this will happen to although it is known that having asthma is a strong risk factor. This flu virus also differs from the "regular" flu in that it can penetrate deeply into the lungs and replicate there, just as the deadly avian flu does. No one really understands this virus yet which is why it is still being watched closely to see how it behaves. Most people will be lucky and have a few days of suffering and nothing worse, but many people will not be so lucky. Don't be one of those selfish people who thinks this is no big deal and then spreads it to others - it may be a big deal to them or someone they love. BTW both the seasonal flu and H1N1 vaccines come in the form of a live virus - it's called Flu Mist and it is only given to certain people. Most people will be getting the killed viurs form which cannot give you the flu no matter what some people believe.
24I'm not really concerned, I've never gotten the flu before, but I am getting married in January and my officemate is pregnant, so I feel like I should.
25I've never had a flu shot and probably never will. I opted out of Gardasil, too, only because our government mandated it for teenagers and it sickens me to think of the behind-doors dealings between our ministry of health and the pharmaceutical companies... I really, really resent the way our tax dollars are being spent on advertising for these giant corporations under the guise of being public service health announcements.
26I can't help but wonder what other sneaky things they're sticking in these shots...esp. in urban communities and at free clinics.
27i avoid the needle whenever I can. eep!
28Yes, I am pregnant right now and my Dr. is recommending it highly.
29Yes. My Dad will be having a transplant soon and if I want to be around him I need to be vaccinated. No questions asked.
30No, I've already been sick from Swine Flu so I see no use in getting vaccinated.
31I never get flu shots. Why would I get swine flu. I eat healthy, practice good hygiene, get adequate sunlight, enough sleep moderate exercise and rest. My own natural immune system is good enough. Plus vaccines are genetically altered anyways... not natural and they contain preservatives.
32The last epidemic of this when the swine flu shots came out more people died of the shots than the flu. No I won't be getting one.
33It took 33 comments for someone to get it right.
For god's sake people, do your RESEARCH!
that is what the internet is for----Google it.
YOUTUBE it.
there are hundreds of articles and videos out there right now discussing the dangers in this newly released Vaccine. Do any of you know what happened in 1976 when everyone took the vaccine? Do your homework because in some places it is MANDATORY to take it. They just passed a Bill In Mass. that you need to research too.
this is serious people, not a joke.
and i am not talking about the flu itself but the "cure".
