Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and Nutrisystem help people lose weight with packaged meals that teach portion control. HMR (Health Management Resources) is another weight-loss program that's offering meal and snack replacements. However, HMR programs are offered at hospitals and medical centers as well as health facilities as opposed private offices. You can also opt for the HMR at Home program. The program is highly structured menu-wise, and utilizes HMR shakes, entrees, hot cereal, and bars. It also emphasizes support in the form of group meetings or phone calls.

This program isn't as well-known as say Jenny Craig, so if you can't find a program offered at a facility near you then you'll have to do it on your own. Entrees cost about $3.50 each, and the shakes are $21.50 for 12 servings. If you want more variety, you can order hot cereal, some weird soup they call HMR 500 Chicken Soup, or four different flavors of BeneFit Bars. I'm not one to knock it till you try it, but HMR seems too rigid. It's not a lifestyle you can keep up, unless you wan to eat its Five-Bean Casserole for the rest of your life. I understand that some people need structure, but this program just hand-feeds you and doesn't do anything to teach you about maintaining a healthy diet. I guess that's how they make it's money though — from you buying its food.
I'm curious, have any of you ever tried HMR?

No way. It sounds too much like Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem, which are all the same ol' BS...you lose weight as long as you eat their processed packaged crap and then when you go back to eating your old food, you gain the weight back. You need to learn HOW to eat real food; not just what to buy to lose weight now.
1ew....none of that has no appeal to me
2*any appeal

4Weight Watchers is not like Jenny Craig or Nutra-system, in that you do not eat pre-packaged meals. With WW, there is a focus on making your own food and also being accountable whether you are eating out or cooking at home.
5Thank you Hello Kitty Mini! i was pretty shocked to see that WW had been lumped into the same category as Jenny Craig and Nutra-system. WW is all about learning about portion size and what foods are worth in the grand scheme of your calorie intake/output. And Fit, since what you seem to support and write so much about IS nutrition and portion control, I'm surprised that you would make such a glaring error.
6The HMR program is quite different from programs like nutri-system and Jenny Craig. For starters it is a medically managed weight loss program run by clinicians, so there is an MD looking at your numbers and lab work. They also don't do anything without research to back up claims, and show long term results on par with bariatric surgery. We run a program at a hospital in Upstate New York, and have many patients that have lost 50+ pounds and have kept it off for more than 2 years. It is disappointing to see HMR compared with a program like nutri-system which is focused around selling you food. Even though HMR uses meal replacements as part of the toolkit, the main focus is getting you off of these foods while maintaining your weight loss. HMR has been around for more than 25 years, I can assure you the program is no Fad Diet.
7I've been on the HMR diet for quite some time. I lost, and am keeping off over 100 pounds. I still use HMR products daily and find them a great tool for weight loss and maintenance.
I think of HMR shakes and entrees this way: They provide a real 'safe haven' from huge hamburgers, overflowing boxes of fries, 1/4 pound cookies, and greasy prepared food found in many fast food outlets and grocery stores. Without them, I would have gain all my weight back years ago.
It is a lifestyle I can keep up? You bet.
8I have started HMR a week ago. Initially it is only meal replacements, shake, etc but from what I got at the meeting, once your reach your goal, you enter a maintenance phase where you no longer have to buy their products.
9Compared to ww frozen food, HMR prepackaged meals actually taste good and since you add fresh vegetables and fruits, it's even better.
Again it's just one week so maybe it's too soon for me to draw conclusions but so far it seems to keep the promises. What made me decide to go with HMR vs WW? The fact that it has medical background, you talk to nurse and dietitian (possibly doctors if you go for the medically supervised option).
i have tried to stay on this for over 10 years my wife works in Drs office so we get the food half price, and free meetings,,, it is a rip off,,the Dr. makes tons of $$$ on the supplement, and the entrees are very boring, they have had the SAME ones for over 9 years... just came out with a 2 new one in the fall.. the best part bout the food is takes no refrigeration (tons of chemicals!) the supplement has aspartame. Better off buying Slimfast powder is cheaper even with my half off from the Docs office. Oh I have lost and gained it all back an more,,, they brag bout there success of keeping the weight off,, they never say they loose about 90% of all folks because it is so costly to attend weekly meetings,, $22 a meeting,, with 15-20 people at a meeting,, Docs are getting rich on this program! lots of drop outs
