Nutritionist Joy Bauer is on a one woman mission to dispel many diet myths.
Answer the following statements as true or false.
hmm I didn't know you could do something about your metabolism!
1I have a bone to pick with number two - it's wrong. there are things that you can do to increase your metabolism.... but l;ike ti or not when you get older it slows down - BOTTOM LINE... so you may increase it by building muscle and eating right but that doens't meant hat your age does effect it.
2the key point in that statement is "....and there's nothing you can do". Theres plenty you can do, and truly from a physiological standpoint, your metabolism really does not slow down on average until one's mid 30's. This is why it is so important to start an fitness regime in your 20's, and keep it up, especially in terms of building muscle mass since that is one of the primary things to decrease as you age (30's and 40's).
3I once heard of a rat study done on the six meals a day thing...
The study had six groups of rats. Each group of rats was given the same amount of food everyday.
The first group of rats had their daily rations in one portion per day. The second group of rats had their daily rations in two portions per day. etc... The sixth group of rats had their daily rations in six portions per day.
So... all the rats were eating the same amount of food per day. The difference was if and how they divided the food among their day.
This is what happened over time...
The first group of rats gained the most weight (one meal a day).
The third group of rats maintained their weight (three meals a day).
The sixth group of rats lost the most weight (six meals a day).
Yet... the first group of rats weren't eating more food than the sixth group of rats...
4i did really bad!!! i hate trick questions!!!!
5yaaaay i am breelliant!! haha
6That's what I've heard, Ailene. I heard that eating smaller meals will speed up your metabolism.
7Yeah, it does... but I guess the quiz was right that eating 3 meals OR 6 meals is healthy... and it's not necessarily better to eat 6 meals. If you're really skinny and you're trying to put on some pounds (or just maintain your weight) than 3 meals would be a better option than 6 meals.
8I bombed this... no wonder I am having problems losing =o[
9I always heard that eating six little meals was better because it speeds up your metabolism.
